Design parameters for corbel:1

Characteristic strength of concrete fck = 30 N/mm2

Characteristic strength of steel fy = 500 N/mm2
Unit weight of concrete = 25 kN/m3
Bearing strength of concrete, σbr = 0.8 x fck = 24 N/mm2
Maximum shear stress for M30 grade of concrete, τcmax = 3.5 N/mm2
Nominal cover to reinforcement = 40 mm
Assumed diameter of the bar = 16 mm
Maximum neutral axis depth, xumax / d = 0.46
av Fv
Fh

450
b DF 225

d Ds

450

Maximum vertical load, Fv = 5.00 kN

Width of the corbel = 450 mm
Distance of the load from the face of the column av = 300 mm

DIMENSIONS OF CORBEL:
(a) Breadth of bearing plate:
Bearing strength of concrete, = 24 N/mm2
Assume the length of bearing plate = 300 mm
Bearing area = Fv / σbr = (5 x (10^ 3) )/24 = 208.34 mm2
Width of the plate, b = 208.34/300 = 1 mm
Provide width of plate = 200 mm
The size of plate 200 mm x 300 mm

(b) Depth of bracket at support:

Assume τc value of 3 N/mm2
Effective depth ,d = 5x(10^3)/(3x450)= 4 mm
Hence Provide effective depth as "d" = 552 mm
Check for effective depth , av /d < 0.6
Hence av /d = 300/552 = 0.54
Hence av/d < 0.6 less than 0.6; corbel action
Depth at the root of corbel , =

Ds  d   cover 552 + 16/ 2 + 40 = 600 mm

No compression reinforcement required

(d) Resolution of forces:

Ft = P x av / z = 5 x (10^3) x 300 / 551= 3 kN
Fv / 2 = 5/ 2 = 3 kN
Ft = max(3,3) = 3 kN

(e) Area of tension reinforcement:

Ast = (Ft + Fh ) / fs =
es = 0.0035 (d - x ) / x = 0.0035 x (552-2) / 2 = 0.9625
For Es = 0.9625 fs = = 361 N/mm2
Ast = 3 x 1000 / 361 = 9 mm2
Ast min required (0.4/100) x450x552= 993.6 mm2
Provide 6 Nos of 16mm dia bars
Ast provided 201 x 6= 1206 mm2

(f) Check for minimum and maximum steel:

percentage of steel provided = 1206 x 100 / 450 x 552= 0.486 %
pt provided is greater than 0.4% and less than 1.3%. Hence safe

(g) Area of shear steel:

Minimum Asv = 0.5 Ast 1206/2 = 603 mm2
Provide 3 Nos of 2 legged 10mm dia stirrups in the upper two-third depth
Spacing = 2/3 x 552/2.5= 150 mm

(h) Shear capacity of the section:

Tc for 0.48551% of steel is = 0.52 N/mm2
av / d = = 0.54
Increased shear strength = 2 x 0.52/0.54= 1.93 N/mm2
The shear capacity of concrete is 1.93 x 450 x 552/1000= 479 kN
Shear capacity of steel 0.87 x 415 x 157 x 552/(150x1000)= 209 kN
Total shear capacity 479 + 209= 688 kN
688kN > 5kN Hence safe
