The passage discusses using z-tests, t-tests, and calculating means and standard deviations to analyze sample data.

Z-tests were used in examples 1 and 2 to compare sample means to population means. A t-test was used in example 3 to compare pre-test and post-test scores.

Example 1 tested if a sample was better than the rest of the students. Example 2 tested if sales had gone lower. Example 3 tested if there was a difference between pre-and post-test scores.

1. Past records showed that the average final examination grade
in Math III is 70 with a standard deviation of 8.0. A random
sample of 100 students was taken and found to have a mean
final exam grade of 71.8. Is this an indication that the sample
is better than the rest of the students? Test at 0.05 level of
significance.
Since 𝑛 = 100, and only one sample mean is given, then we
use the Z – test and the test statistic is:
𝑍=((𝑋 ̅−𝜇)√𝑛)/𝜎
Substituting 𝜇=70, 𝑋 ̅= 71.8, 𝑛=100 and 𝜎=8.00.
𝑍= ((71.8−70) √100)/8
𝒁=2.25

Ho: The sample is as good as the rest of the students.

Ha: The sample is better than the rest of the students.
Since, it is a one-tailed test Ztab = ± 1.65
As, 2.25 is > 1.65; Ho is rejected.
Conclusion: The sample is better than the rest of the students.

2. A newsboy can sell an average of 45 newspaper a day. For the

last 2 weeks (14 days), he sold an average of 38 newspaper
with a standard deviation of 14. Does this indicate that his
sales has gone lower? Test at 0.01 level of significance.
n= 14
μ= 45
σ= 14
x1= 38
Substituting values
Z= {(x1 - μ) √n}/ σ
= {(38-45) √14}/ 14
= -1.87

Ho: The newsboy sales are the same as before 2 weeks ago.
Ha : The newsboy sales have gone lower than 2 weeks ago.
Since it is a one-tailed test Ztab is ± 2.33
As, -1.87 > -2.33; Ho is rejected.
Conclusion: The newsboy sales have gone lower than 2
weeks ago.

3. 3. At the beginning of every school year, pre – test is given to

all students who will take Algebra to find out how much they
know regarding the subject. Then, at the end of the school
year, post-test is administered to the same students to find
out how much they have learned of the subject. A random
sample of 20 students were taken from last year’s batch and it
was found that they have the following test scores:

Is there a significant difference between the pre-test and the

post-test scores of these students? Use 𝛼=0.01

d = -16.55
sd = 9.48
df = 20-1 = 19
t = (d√n)/ sd
= (-16.55 √20) / 9.48
= -7.80
Ho : There is no significant difference between the pre-test and
the post-test score of these students.
Ha : There is a significant difference between the pre-test and
the post-test score of these students.
Since it is a two-tailed test and ttab is 1.341.
As, -7.80 is < 1.341, Ho is rejected.

Conclusion: there is a significance difference between the pre-

test and the post-test score of these students.

4. The following data represent the number of minutes that a

student stays inside the guidance counselor’s office on a
certain day.

A. Find the following statistics:

𝑛_1=____, 𝑥 ̅_1=_____, 𝑠_1=______
𝑛_2=____, 𝑥 ̅_2=_____, 𝑠_2=______

B. Test the hypothesis that the average counseling time of

Counselor B exceeds the average counseling time of
Counselor A at 𝛼=0.05

Counselor A (x) ( X- X1)^2

102 78.76
86 50.76
98 23.76
109 252.01
92 1.26
60 1097.26
78 228.76
120 722.26
X1 = 93.125 ∑=2454.83
S1 = √2454.83/ 8-1

= √350.69

= 18.72

Counselor B ( X- X2)^2
(x)
80 1080.76
165 2717.01
97 252.01
134 446.26
92 435.76
87 669.51
113 0.015
135 489.51
X1 = 112.875 ∑= 6090.83

S2 = √∑(x-x2) ^2 / n- 1
= √6090.83 / 7
= 29.49
