EXPERIMENT 4

Aim: To find measure the viscosity of the given liquid using Mayer’s disc.

Apparatus Used: Table top metallic stand, Oscillating Disc Brass, Wire chuck
with sample wire, balancing thread screw 50gm weighing, water trough, Digital
stop watch, Screw gauge & spirit level, Option accessories: Lamp & scale
arrangement.

Formula Used:

η=∏ tg r 4 /8 IV

Theory: A relation between the damping of a cylinder, suspended from a torsion

wire and oscillating around its axis in an infinite fluid, and the coefficient of
viscosity of the latter has been deduced. For very thin disks and very weak
damping, this relation is the same as that found by some other authors. The
theoretical result has been checked by using it for absolute measurements in water,
diethyl-ether and air at ordinary temperatures, with disks and cylinders of different
sizes, and by comparing the data with those obtained by means of other methods.
The agreement proves to be good.

Diagram:
Procedure:

1. Firstly make stand on table with proper leveling via spirit level.
2. Connect wire one end of chuck other end oscillating disc.
3. Take trough fill water in disc balancing through thread screws.
4. Reflecting mirror through lamp scale arrangement.
5. Now oscillate the disc take count and reflecting distance ⱷ.
6. Firstly without water and then with water for sample oscillation.
7. Note the value, put in formula find the value of viscosity.

Precautions:
1. Disc alignment should be horizontal.
2. Screws should be proper tight.
3. Pour the water in the trough carefully.
4. Make sure the balance with the help of sprit level.
5. For the oscillations make motion in the disc smoothly.

Outcome:

1. Student learns that motion of an object in fluid is affected by the viscosity of the
fluid.
2. Student measure the viscosity of the fluid using this phenomenon.
