Name of the project: Simulation of Buck-Boost Converter in matlab Simulink platform

Abstract of the project:

A Buck-Boost converter is a type of switched mode power supply that combines the
principles of the Buck Converter and the Boost converter in a single circuit. Like other SMPS
designs, it provides a regulated DC output voltage from either an AC or a DC input.
The buck–boost converter is a type of DC-to-DC converter that has an output voltage
magnitude that is either greater than or less than the input voltage magnitude.
The Buck converter produces a DC output in a range from 0V to just less than the input
voltage.
The Boost converter will produce an output voltage ranging from the same voltage as the
input, to a level much higher than the input.

Application of the project:

Battery-powered systems, where the input voltage can vary widely, starting at full charge and
gradually decreasing as the battery charge is used up. At full charge, where the battery
voltage may be higher than actually needed by the circuit being powered, a buck regulator
would be ideal to keep the supply voltage steady.
However as the charge diminishes, the input voltage falls below the level required by the
circuit, and either the battery must be discarded or re-charged; at this point the ideal
alternative would be the boost regulator.
By combining these two regulator designs it is possible to have a regulator circuit that can
cope with a wide range of input voltages both higher and lower than that needed by the
circuit. Fortunately both buck and boost converters use very similar components; they just
need to be re-arranged, depending on the level of the input voltage. In concise we can
highlight following points:
 It is used in the self regulating power supplies.
 It has consumer electronics.
 It is used in the Battery power systems.
 Adaptive control applications.
 Power amplifier applications.
Circuit Diagram:

Fig:Circuit Diagram of Buck Booster Converter

The input voltage source is connected to a solid state device. The second switch used is a
diode. The diode is connected, in reverse to the direction of power flow from source, to a
capacitor and the load and the two are connected in parallel as shown in the figure above.
The controlled switch is turned on and off by using Pulse Width Modulation(PWM). PWM
can be time based or frequency based. Frequency based modulation has disadvantages like a
wide range of frequencies to achieve the desired control of the switch which in turn will give
the desired output voltage. Time based Modulation is mostly used for DC-DC converters. It is
simple to construct and use. The frequency remains constant in this type of PWM
modulation.
The Buck Boost converter has two modes of operation. The first mode is when the switch is
on and conducting.
Mode I : Switch is ON, Diode is OFF

The Switch is ON and therefore represents a short circuit ideally offering zero resistance to
the flow of current so when the switch is ON all the current will flow through the switch and
the inductor and back to the DC input source. The inductor stores charge during the time the
switch is ON and when the solid state switch is OFF the polarity of the Inductor reverses so
that current flows through the load and through the diode and back to the inductor. So the
direction of current through the inductor remains the same.

Mode II : Switch is OFF, Diode is ON

In this mode the polarity of the inductor is reversed and the energy stored in the inductor is
released and is ultimately dissipated in the load resistance and this helps to maintain the flow
of current in the same direction through the load and also step-up the output voltage as the
inductor is now also acting as a source in conjunction with the input source.

Discussion about project:

Buck Boost Converter is a converter which converts variable DC voltage to required DC
voltage. Buck Boost converter is used to get DC output voltage greater than input voltage or
lesser than the input voltage. Closed loop control is a process by which the output voltage is
stabilised by obtaining the feedback of the loop.
Closed loop control of Buck Boost Converter is used to obtain a constant DC output voltage.
The switching frequency and duty cycle decides the output voltage. In the closed loop
process the output voltage is compared with a set voltage and the error value is reduced by
controlling the switching pulse. In above simulation closed loop control was
used .
Conclusion:
The whole schematic diagram was simulated via matlab Simulink
platform. At first the buck mode was operated and we obtained the output
of 24 as shown above .Later when the reference was set to 48 volt ,we
operated it in boost mode .As a result the output voltage of 100 v was
obtained. This project will play a important role in the field of power
electronics.
