HISTORY

St. Paul University Philippines (SPUP) was founded on May 10,

1907, as Colegio de San Pablo, by the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres,
(Mother Ephrem Marie Fieu, Sr. Suzanne du Sacre Coeur Cran, Sr. Agnes
de Sainte Anne Couplan, and Sr. Jeanne de St. Louis Bourrelly, Sr. Marie
Angeline Acau and Postulant Sr. Ste. Foy de Sacre Coeur Sacramento)
who came to Cagayan Valley upon the invitation of Bishop Dennis
Dougherty. The school’s name was changed to Colegio del Sagrado
Corazon de Jesus in 1909, then to Sacred Heart of Jesus Institution
(SHOJI) in 1925. The school started in a Spanish Convento, adjoining the
Cathedral, but due to increase of enrollment and curricular expansion, the
community moved to the Colegio de San Jacinto and its grounds in 1934
(where the University stands today) which the SPC Sisters acquired from
the Dominican Order.
The school served as military garrison and hospital of the Japanese
forces in 1941. The entire complex was razed to the ground during the
Liberation. In 1948, the school undertook the initiative of being the first
Teacher-Training Institution in Cagayan Valley, as it assumed the name
St. Paul College of Tuguegarao (SPCT). With the opening of college
degrees, the school became the first accredited institution in the region by
the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities
(PAASCU) in 1961. However, the entire complex was reduced into ashes
on January 18, 1965. Despite the challenges and like a gold tested in fire,
SPUP became the first University and Catholic University in Cagayan
Valley in 1982.
In its efforts towards global and international education, SPUP
gained the distinction of being the First Private Catholic University in Asia
and the First Private University in the Philippines to be granted ISO 9001
Certification by TUV Rheinland in 2000 and the only University accredited
by the Asian Association of Schools of Business International (AASBI) in
2014. SPUP has also been selected, as one of only 11 Universities in the
Philippines, by World Bank as Knowledge for Development Center (KDC).
Moreover the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) has designated
SPUP as one of the 12 participating schools in the entire country for the
ASEAN International Mobility for Students (AIMS) programme. In July
2014, SPUP was conferred a full accredited status by the International
Accreditation Organization (IAO) in recognition of its outstanding
organizational management, business management and business
performance through its commitment to quality and continuous
improvement. SPUP has also been sought as a partner University of
international schools in Asia, Europe and Australia. These accolades
advanced the stature of SPUP as an International University. Currently,

1
the international community in SPUP, comprising of international and
exchange students and professors, is continuously growing; while, its
international linkages and partnerships are extensively expanding.
Subsequently the pioneering Internationalization initiatives of SPUP have
fostered opportunities for SPUP students and teachers for their academic
exposure and exchange, work and travel, and cultural immersions in
various countries across the world. As a result, SPUP has been recognized
as an affiliate of the UNESCO Associated Schools Project Network, or
ASPNet for its support to international understanding, peace, intercultural
dialogue, sustainable development and quality education in practice.
In the evangelization of faith and promotion of arts and culture, the
Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines through the Episcopal
Commission on Culture (CBCP-ECC) identified SPUP as a Catholic Center
for Culture in 2012. Through this designation, SPUP is tasked to
collaborate in the conservation of the patrimony of the Church and to
promote greater awareness of the Church’s heritage through education,
worship and the Sacraments. SPUP has also instituted a proactive
ecumenical approach towards intercultural and interfaith differences due
to the increasing population of international students. The creative
approach “to where faith and culture meet” responds to the challenges of
internationalization where the academic community is strongly rooted in
the Catholic beliefs, respectful of others’ creed and culture. In 2014, the
National Historical Commission (NHCP) of the Philippines bestowed SPUP
a Historical Marker in recognition of its contribution in the historical
development of Cagayan Valley in the fields of education and public
service. The recognition endeavored SPUP one of the government-
recognized historical landmarks in the region and in the country.
Today, SPUP is recognized by the Commission on Higher Education
(CHED) as an Autonomous Institution; Center of Excellence in Nursing,
Center of Excellence in Teacher Education; Center of Development in
Information Technology; Center of Teacher Training Institution; the first
accredited Integrated Basic Education Unit in Cagayan Valley; a deputized
institution for the Expanded Tertiary Education Equivalency Accreditation
Program (ETEAAP); Most Outstanding Student Services in the Philippines;
Outstanding Research/Academic Library in the Philippines; and, the Lead
School of the St. Paul University System.
For more than a century of existence, SPUP has proven its
tradition of excellence and untarnished reputation of providing quality,
Catholic, Paulinian education. As it offers basic education to graduate
school programs, SPUP has continuously formed graduates in personifying
Catholic and Paulinian values and virtues; thereby, making a difference in

Good News; like Christ, he/she actively works “to save” this world, to make it
better place to live in.

Community. The Paulinian is a responsible family member and citizen,

concerned with building communities, promotion of people, justice, and
peace, and the protection of the environment.

Charism. The Paulinian develops his/her gifts/talents to be put in the service
of the community, he/she strives to grow and improve daily, always seeking
the better and finer things, and the final good.

Charity. Urged on by the love of Christ, the Paulinian is warm, hospitable,

Catholic Filipino men and women who find fulfillment in intelligent fellowship
and responsible leadership in meeting their responsibilities to God, country,
and fellowmen.

UNIVERSITY SEAL
The St. Paul University Philippines seal with its various symbols was
adopted from the cost of arms of the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres who
founded the University and other Paulinian schools.

Green and Gold are the official colors of all Paulnian educational institution.

Green symbolizes Life, Hope and Newness. It stands for dynamism,

initiative, innovation and the willingness to blaze new trails.

6
Gold symbolizes integrity, excellence, and the glory of God. For the
Paulinians, it stands for honesty, uprightness and the constant striving for
what is excellent, true and good, especially for the Ultimate Good – God
Himself

Red, white and blue colors of the Philippines flag symbolize patriotism

or love of country. The tricolor also recalls the flag of France, country of
origin of the SPC Congregation, inviting fidelity to the Paulinian tradition as
taught and exemplified by the Sisters of St. Paul Chartres. Specifically, Red is
for courage, readiness for sacrifice and the tranquil daring to face every
challenge; White is for purity, simplicity and single-mindedness in the pursuit
of the Holy; Blue is for justice and peace and for the devotion to the Blessed
Virgin Mary, the Mother of God.

The sword in the seal is the Gospel that cuts both ways – inviting to
conversion from the old life to commitment to the values of Christ. For the
Paulinian, it stands for fortitude and discipline to face the challenges of
continuing renewal, giving up one’s ways to be a new man in Christ.

Books stands for knowledge and wisdom, for the skills, values, attitudes,
and competencies which the Paulinian seeks to acquire.

Lamp means for light, witness, and service; it is symbolic of a life that

benefits others, that witnesses to Christ and the values of the Gospel

Laurel Leaf signifies triumph. It is a reminder of the Christocentric Paschal

Spirituality and challenges every Paulinian has to accept to endure the pains
that is our share in the sufferings of Christ so we could share in His victory.

The Wavy Line: the waters of the sea that signify readiness to go where the
mission calls and tranquil daring to face what is difficult and unknown. It also
stands for Cagayan where the University is located and whose people it is
committed to serve.

7
1907, the date of the school’s foundation; shows not only the historical
distance traversed by the school from its early beginnings as Colegio de San
Pablo but its stability and consistency of commitment.

THE UNIVERSITY MOTTO

Caritas is action born of faith and of a deep love of God and neighbor. It is
compassionate, caring, warmth, hospitality, being “all to all” which marks the
Paulinian and witness of life impacts. Like the Sisters of Saint Paul of
Chartres whose life motto is Caritas Christi Urget Nos, the Paulinian is
motivated by love especially for the underprivileged.

Veritas, is an epitome of morality, values and social concern, the striving for
truth and justice, peace and unity and the higher gifts of the Spirit. It is
entrenched by the legacy left by the founder of the Sisters of Saint Paul of
Chartres, Father Louis Chauvet, who said, “I have no greater blessing than to
see my daughters walk in the truth.” It is an improved quality of life rooted
in Christ and the Paulinian zeal to build communities of authentic disciples.

Scientia, is authentic scholarship, systematic and disciplined effort to teach

and learn so that the gifts or “charisms” of the Paulinian may be fully
developed to make him a competent servant leader of the Church and
country.

ST. PAUL UNIVERSITY SYSTEM

The St. Paul University System is a network of Paulinian education
institutions bound by its commitment to form Christ-centered, integrated and
competent persons in the service of the church and society.

Through collaboration, complementation and resource sharing, the system

ensures the delivery of quality programs and services by its members, thus

PAULINIAN HYMN
Hark! Sons and Daughters of St. Paul,
Come listen to his call.
O children of this loved school,
The loving nurse of all.
Rejoice in God, do work and play,
Be true from day to day;
Beloved school of mine,
My pains and joys are thine.
My childhood’s early dreams are closely linked with thee;
The hope that heaven brings
Thou dost unfold to me. (2x)

Sweet are the days of childhood,

With friends we love and care;
Those golden years of childhood
Whose sympathy we share,
Do stay and while the hours away,
With us in work and play,
And when we leave our dear old school,
These mem’ries we’ll recall. (2x)

(Repeat Refrain)

9
PAULINIAN MISSION SONG
My goal as a Paulinian is this:
to proclaim JESUS CHRIST as the GOOD NEWS
to all in response to the need for TOTAL SALVATION
from materialism, unjust structures,
and apathy through education and care of the sick.

Thus, if life seems rough and the way is dark,

I will remember this goal:
to proclaim Christ at all times like Mary and Paul,
for I believe what Jesus said:
“I AM WITH YOU TILL THE END OF TIME.”

and so each day, as I travel on,

I will remember that I’m a Paulinian
committed to Jesus Christ, my Lord,
to love and serve one another,
till in Him we unite.
