Flowing water is a major source of energy. The electricity produced by the flowing water is
known as hydro-electric power. A dam or water reservoir is made over a river. Lot of water
is available in river, so the hydroelectric power is available free of cost. The energy of stored
water in the dam is potential energy. The water in a dam is allowed to fall on the water
wheel or turbine. As a result of this, the turbine rotates whose axle is connected with the
armature of the generator. The rotation of the armature of the generator between two poles
of a strong magnet gives rise to electric current or electricity. While constructing the dam, a
large area of fertile land is submerged at the site of the dam and a large number of plants
and wild life in the area of dam is
submerged in water. Hydroelectric
dams cannot be constructed

(a) down a group
(b) from left to right in a period.

3. Answer question numbers 1(a)-1(d) on the basis of your understanding of the following
paragraph and the related studied concepts.
Technologies Implemented in Rural Areas in
Rajasthan State includes bio gas plants that are
made from bamboo reinforced cement mortar.
This bio gas plant provides clean cooking energy
for the house, saving traditional cooking-fuels
such as firewood, cow dung cakes, LPG gas etc.
Biogas production also provides excellent
composted manure as a by-product to be used in
kitchen gardens or fields. A 2m3 biogas plant built in Rani Chauri area of the project which
is fed daily with 50 kg cattle manure mixed with 50 litres of water produces sufficient gas
for cooking for a family of 6-8 persons. Biogas plant would save approximately 4 tons of
CO2 equivalents per year. The key to success of this model is that it is easily replicable. It is
easily learned and uses simple durable technologies, with locally available material that is
environmentally friendly. It also fulfills felt needs such as clean, cheap energy for cooking.
