The advancement of genetic engineering in medicine is without a doubt one of the most helpful

breakthroughs of our time; yet, applying the same engineering to a different field is a different story.

According to Nature Education GMO is altering or manipulating the gene of one organism to the other.
However, altering the natural state of an organism through foreign gene expression can bring unknown
consequences. And can also change the organism metabolism, growth rate, and response to external
environmental factors.

The most frequently cited example of GMO is Agricultural Plants. The benefits of it in agriculture are to
increased crop yields, resistance to pest and disease, and greater food security. Farmers reduce the
amount of insecticide that they must apply to their crops. However, we oppose the idea. To further
illustrate, According to Modern Farmer, Mr. Chris and his Father started to plant GMO seeds on their
farm as soon as it is on the market. Although it is pricey, they can still save more on herbicides and
pesticides as the seeds are resistant to it.

Yes, it provided them more yield but after five years trouble started to rose. As they use less pesticide
while corn rootworms are not prevalent, rootworms and weeds started to adjust and not long after,
they became resistant too. This concludes that there will be a point that our environment or
surroundings will adjust to the changes. MOTHER NATURE WILL ADJUST. They tried to go back to their
old ways, which is planting conventional seeds, the organic one while simultaneously including GMO
seeds. To their amusement, the conventional seed brings more yield than the GMO.

It also applies to other farmers across the nation. The seeds are still expensive *and they must revert to
their old ways, using more toxic chemicals, which overshadow the promised benefits of GMO
technology. According to Food & Water Watch Reports between 2001-2010 the herbicide use increased
26% as weed resistance grew. It shows that the trait does not work anymore like it used to

In terms of cost since the introduction of GMO the seed industry has been massively affected.
According to USDA or U.S Department of Agriculture, between 1995 and 2014 the seed spiked
dramatically in per acre cost of soybean (23.98-101.04 dollars) and corn seed (13.32-60.06) by 351% and
321% respectively. And this has made a huge impact on the farmer’s budget and leaving them tighter
margins.

In 1980 GMO started to be patented, and now it is the key for the biotech companies to increased their
profit and power. This became costly to the farmers because they also have to pay for licensing fees,
signing of contract and inspection of their farm. When farmers start to grow a GMO crop there is no
turning back. They need to purchase it each year or else they will be held for patent infringement.
In 2012 the scientist led by biologist Gilles-Eric Seralini tested the long term effect of Roundup ready
corn to feeding rats diets. They found out that rats faced:

• 2-3 times more large tumors than the control group

• And 50% of males and 70% of females died prematurely

Given these facts, is there really an assurance of safety in the long run of consuming GMO?. In addition
the researcher cannot easily acquire a seed from the farmers so they cannot conduct further research
on GMO without a license. And this allows the companies to restrict the research on their seeds.

Restricting researchers in conducting further research? Why? Is there a ticking bomb waiting to
explode? Are there any dirty tricks that they do not want to be disclosed?. In conclusion, they still do not
have enough evidences that would prove that consuming GMOs would be safe in the long run. I want to
end this with a quote by Gary Hopkins “Our primary health care should begin on the farm and in our
hearts, and not in some laboratory of the biotech and pharmaceutical companies.”. Thank you.
