WORKSHOP: SECURING AND INTERNSHIP IN-STATE AND OUT-OF-STATE


Many employers look to their interns when full-time positions become available in their company.
Internships give you the chance to 'test-drive' a career. Learn how to go about finding an internship, what
qualifications or classes are necessary, and generally what to expect from the internship experience. The
workshop will be held on Thursday, March 31 from 12:00-1:00pm in the Trojan Presentation
Room (STU B3).

COMPANY PROFILE EVENTS


During the academic semesters, we invite employers to conduct company presentations. We strongly
recommend that you attend these information sessions to learn about different industries and
organizations, as well as meet some of their key employees. Over the next few weeks SoCal Edison,

CAREER CENTER INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS


The Career Planning & Placement Center is offering two great summer internship programs for 2011:
Dream Dollars and The Scheyer Family Scholarship.

The Dream Dollars Program is a unique “scholarship” program for undergraduates. The USC Dream
Dollars Program provides stipends for USC students who receive internships with a non-profit or
government organization. This program will support students hoping to gain work experience from an
unpaid internship. Students will be selected through an application and interview process. All internships
must be a minimum of six weeks during the summer. The program provides a stipend of $1,200 for each
student. Students must have an internship prior to applying for this scholarship. For more information

The Scheyer Family Scholarship for Summer Interns, established in December of 2007, will provide an
award of $2,500 to two students enrolled in approved summer internships. Preference will be given to
sophomores, juniors or seniors with demonstrated financial need. Student recipients must have a major in
the USC College of Letters, Arts & Sciences and must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. Students
must be in good academic standing and must have a graduation date between December 2011 and May
2014. Students must have an internship prior to applying for this scholarship. For more information please

 Nordstrom – 2011 Internship Program


Are you graduating in Winter 2011 or anytime in 2012 and looking for a career in fashion? The

retail, who are motivated achievers and hardworking team players. As an intern, you will receive
mentoring and training in the exciting world of fashion—experiences you won’t find in the
classroom. During the internship, you will have the opportunity to: learn from the experienced people
who bring the Nordstrom experience to life, gain hands-on experience by selling and serving

 USC Center on Public Diplomacy (CPD) – Summer Institute Internship
The student intern will support the Assistant Director for Programming and Events in coordinating
and administering the Summer Institute in Public Diplomacy, a two-week professional training
seminar run by the Center that will take place from July 17-29, 2011. Responsibilities will include
managing paperwork for visa applications, communicating logistical information to participants,
organizing seminar events, drafting correspondence, maintaining and updating the social networking
site for Summer Institute participants and alumni and other tasks as necessary. Terms and Duration:
May 1 – August 1, 2011; May 1 – July 16, 2011: 10-20 hours per week; July 17 – August 1, 2011:
Can be up to 40 hours per week. Compensation will be commensurate with experience. Must be a
current USC student, and possess the following qualifications: strong organizational skills and
thorough attention to detail, excellent writing and communication skills, experience in previous event
coordination and management, ability to multi-task and manage multiple assignments, reliable and
professional work ethic, ability to work independently, familiarity with social networking mediums.

 Sapphos Environmental, Inc. – Biology Intern


Sapphos Environmental, Inc. is looking for 1 or 2 interns with interests or experience in the biological
sciences to work in the Resources Management group. Under the direction of the Manager of
Resources Management, this position would require the intern to perform entry-level work pertaining
to biological studies supporting the implementation of the California Environmental Quality Act
(CEQA), the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and other environmental rules and
regulations Each intern is assigned to work under the supervision of a mentor. Interns will receive
training in standardized field survey methods and equipment, and are expected to be able to conduct
independent work during their internship. Interns will assist with data management, and will be
expected to contribute to reports documenting survey results. Exposure to a wide range of entry-level
environmental consulting and related activities can be expected. This internship is designed to assist
the intern in refining their career and academic objectives while gaining field experience. The goal of
the internship program is to provide the applicant with the following: Experience working as an
environmental consultant, skills and training in identification of southern California plants and
animals, including special status species, increased knowledge of the environmental laws and
regulations, a broad range of experience related to various fields of the environmental consulting
industry, experience working as a team to approach problem solving in a private small business
enterprise. Duties include: conducting field surveys, IDing plants and wildlife, research and
compiling data for projects, preparing reports and graphics, performing technical work related to
environmental analysis. Must be familiar with common plants and animals of southern California, or
have experience working with a particular taxonomic group. Must have computer skills in Word,
Excel. Must demonstrate strong organizational abilities, interpersonal skills, and a willingness to
learn. Must be willing to work long hours in difficult field conditions. Must be able to maintain a
positive attitude and adhere to the highest standards of excellence. Current student or recent graduate
from a recognized undergraduate or graduate level program (preferably a MS, BS, or BA in Biology,
or a closely related field). The internship program requires 40 hours per week beginning anytime in
March and concluding anytime around June. The salary for this position is determined by level of

UNPAID INTERNSHIPS
 The Phoenix Project – 2011 Social Innovation Program (SIP)
SIP is a cutting edge program to prepare top undergraduates, recent graduates, and graduate students
to become the next generation of social entrepreneurs and nonprofit leaders. Graduates from this
intensive six-week institute emerge prepared to apply entrepreneurial approaches to social challenges
through nonprofit, private, and public sector organizations. The program is from June 19-July 30,
2011. This one-of-a-kind institute offers participants the opportunity to complete meaningful
consulting projects for nonprofit and community organizations while learning what it takes to be a
social entrepreneur. Students network with top leaders in the field while enjoying all that the greater

 Mediaplacement Entertainment, Inc – Intern


Mediaplacement is a leading entertainment marketing agency based in Los Angeles. Disciplines
include Product Placement, Celebrity Outreach, Public Relations and Event Production. We are
seeking a highly creative, organized, and intelligent intern with a deep passion for entertainment
marketing. Duties include: Administrative support: answering phones, e-mails, faxing, Fed Ex,
messengers, etc; Brainstorming creative ideas and strategies for clients; Read and break down scripts
for brand opportunities, track coverage; Research (opportunities for brands, new ideas, etc).
Qualifications: Must be punctual, detail oriented, VERY organized, and professional appearance is a
must; Computer proficient; and Photoshop and graphic design experience is highly preferred. All
applicants must be able to commit to a minimum of 12-15 hours a week, schedule is flexible but you
must be able to work some weekends. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about the

 The White House – 2011 Fall Internship


The White House Internship Program provides a unique opportunity to gain valuable professional
experience and build leadership skills. This hands-on program is designed to mentor and cultivate
today’s young leaders, strengthen their understanding of the Executive Office and prepare them for
future public service opportunities. This select group of young men and women from across the
country dedicate their time, talents, energy, and service to better the White House, the community,
and the nation. These committed citizens become a part of the White House team. The assignments
given to an intern on any given day could include conducting research, managing incoming inquiries,
attending meetings, and writing memos. While the interns’ individual responsibilities and tasks vary,
they are united through weekly events and, most importantly, through service. Interns participate in a
long-term service project to help the surrounding community. This is a great opportunity to promote
leadership and a way to learn about their fellow intern class. Each week, interns come together for a
speaker series with senior staff members and participate in off-site field trips around D.C. In addition,
during the summer a few interns are chosen as mentors for the D.C. Scholars program. A completed

 CBS – Sustainability Partnerships Intern


EcoMedia, a CBS Corporation (CBS) company, seeks individuals with a strong interest in issues such
as sustainability, public policy, clean energy, climate change, government affairs, public affairs and
corporate social responsibility (CSR) to assist with both internal and external environmental project
management for CBS. This a unique opportunity to gain practical experience in a first-of-its kind
business model, in the growing field of corporate sustainability directly related to climate change. The
ideal candidates will have demonstrated interest and experience in sustainability and public policy.
Intern will have exposure with the following projects: External Project Sourcing and Support; Assist
with environmental project database management; Calculate environmental benefits of clean energy
projects; Assist with environmental project sourcing for the Sustainable Media advertising model
developed by EcoMedia; Coordinate projects within government contracts; and Communicating
sustainability efforts for CBS. This opportunity is exclusively available to current students and is only

 Relief International – Executive/Grant Research Intern


Relief International (RI), an international relief and development agency with cross-sectoral programs
bridging relief and development, currently seeks a Executive/Grant Research Intern, to be filled as
soon as possible. The Executive/Grant Research intern position is a challenging and rewarding
opportunity for those with a strong desire to be involved in the non-profit sector, humanitarian relief
efforts and international development. The Intern will work directly with Relief International’s CEO,
assisting him with researching grant opportunities, grant writing and administrative tasks. Applicants
should have an academic grasp of international relations, some knowledge of grant writing, have
experience in an office environment, and should have the ability to adapt quickly and efficiently to a
fast-paced and demanding environment. Essential responsibilities include: Research potential
foundations and corporations relevant to RI’s portfolio, undertake specialized research projects and
write briefs for the CEO, assist in writing of grants, assist in the preparation and submission of
administrative documents and procedures. Qualifications include: Available for at least 12-15 hours a
week, a dynamic individual with a demonstrated ability to achieve results in a demanding and fast
paced environment, strong internet research abilities a must, general knowledge of world affairs and
international/intergovernmental institutions, strong interpersonal skills and ability to work
independently as part of a team, excellent written and oral communication skills, second language
desired. Willingness to take direction, but also the ability to think creatively and proactively provides
research and insight. Good organizational skills and detail-oriented. Demonstrated interest in
international development and relief efforts with a strong commitment to local and global social

UBS Freshman Forum is an expenses-paid, immersion into the world of finance. UBS Freshman

Forum will be held on May 19-20, 2011 at the UBS offices in Stamford, Connecticut. The program

 UBS – Sophomore Symposium
