Modern Expression of Spiritual Self: Reflection Paper

Spiritual self is our inner and unseen part of who we are that provide our physical self
with intuition, insights and emotions beyond what our five senses experience on the physical
world. Another is that, our spiritual self is what connects us to one another. The old expression of
spiritual self is different from what today’s expression of the spiritual self. Some old ones
misunderstood how this modern society expressing their spiritual self.

As I watched the videos and read some articles, old expression of spiritual self is through
going to churches and doing some systemized practices like mass, praying and any other like
feasts. Some of them connect themselves to others through church activities which are their
practices. That is why many of them misunderstood how modern society expresses their spiritual
self as it somewhat different from what they are usually doing.

Millennial nowadays are often goes to church to do those practices. As according to the
video, many in this society don’t know what religion they belong but many of them believe in
God and even pray every day. It is not that some millennial hated religion, it is just like we are
left behind by our religious institutions. That is why many young people creating new forms of
communities that also function as what religious institutions did. We millennial creating ways to
connect with other people through having communities who interact with other like outreach
activities, sharing experiences and doing praise and worships. I can say that millennial
expressing their spiritual self not through doing the old practices but still fulfill the same function
of traditional practices.

To sum it up, traditional practices are somewhat different from the practices of modern
society in expressing spiritual self that makes the old ones misunderstood our practices. They
somewhat think that we truly forgotten how to be spiritual. In reality, we really not forgotten our
being spiritual it is just we creating new ways to express our spirituality like through creating
new forms of community that shares view of life and beliefs that allow us to connect and interact
with other people and showing our beliefs.

Discuss how being a Filipino affects yourself. How can becoming a better
Filipino influence your duty to becoming a better version of yourself?
Filipinos are known to be hospitable, Respectful, have strong Family Ties and Religions,
Generous, Helpful, Loving and Caring. On the other hand, Filipinos have traits that are
negative like fatalism, and crab mentality. Growing in this country with my Filipino family,
it is undeniable that I also do have these traits.

In the 19 years of my existence here in this world and in this country, I am what today
because of my experiences, culture, and environment shaped me. My parents taught me a lot
how to become a better person. Being a Filipino, it greatly affects who I am today. Being a
Filipino, it affects my decision making, the way I move and work, how I interact with other
people, experiences, and how I present myself to others. I do believe that these are the
reasons why this is I am today. It is because deep inside me, what I valued today is affected
by what my parents taught me what things to be valued. Well, growing up, I also have valued
things that my parents didn’t teach me, but why I valued those is because it is what I had seen
in my environment. When I made decisions, I am making sure that I’m not the only who
could benefit with but also the people around me. When I move and work, I’m a kind of
being so jolly and joyful. When interacting with other people, I know how to say “opo” and
respect my elders, and I know when I disrespect rude people. What I have experienced is
what I experienced because I am a Filipino and I am in the Philippines. How I present
myself, like others must think of me that I came from a strong family, and I am worth to be
respected. It seems like I only acquire positive traits of the Filipino, but in reality I also have
those negative Filipino traits like the manana habit and fatalism. I also do believe that these
help me in shaping my today’s self.

I strongly believe that becoming a better Filipino could help you become a better version
of yourself. As with this, you can acquire traits that are acceptable by others. A better version
of yourself, are knows how to made the right decisions, respect others as how you respect
yourself, optimistic, and using your experiences to learn. And, I do consider myself that I
have made the right decisions, and I learned from my experiences that make me better today
from what I am yesterday.
