Introduction

Philippines is known for its delicious cuisines. People said that good food brings people

together and Filipinos proved it right. Filipinos love crunchy foods and one of the crowd’s

favorite is the chicharon. Chicharon is one of the most prevalent snacks in the Philippines. It

originated from Spain and was brought into the country when the Spaniards colonized the

Philippines. Ever since, chicharon has been a part of traditional Filipino cuisine. It can be found

anywhere from supermarkets to local sari-sari stores. Filipinos can’t get enough of its crunchy

taste. It even comes up with different flairs and can be eaten in many ways. It can be used as

toppings for Filipino dishes like munggo or palabok. Some people like eating it as pulutan while

drinking alcoholic beverages. Chicharon is commonly found at the heart of every boodle fight

and serves like a viand along with plain white rice. The possibilities of how to eat this widely-

known snack are endless, but some prefer eating it as is—a crunchy finger food. Suffice to say,

Filipinos love chicharon.

Due to the popularity of chicharon, there had been multiple varieties of the snack made

from different kinds of meat. Pork skin and pork belly are usually the main ingredients of the

crispy delicacy. However, Filipinos have made chicharon from other kinds of meat like chicken,

tuna, and beef. The process of how to cook chicharon is quite lengthy. It includes different kinds

of food preservation methods such as marinating to infuse flavor to the meat, drying to the point

of brittleness to ensure that the meat comes out crunchy, and lastly, deep-frying until golden

brown.

The existence of widely-known chicharon had been patronized for several decades.

However, not all Filipinos can totally consume the said delicacy such as vegans and Muslims.

Since chicharon is usually made up of different meats including pork, Muslims living in the
Philippines do not have the chance to taste this kind of delicacy because their religion prohibits

eating pork. In addition to that, vegans and health conscious people are also skeptical and

reluctant when it comes to consuming this snack as it has a high-calorie content which, therefore,

does not make it recommendable to eat for people who want to try out a healthy lifestyle. For

these reasons, the ChicharOnion Corporation decided to replace chicharon’s main core

ingredients into antioxidants, diet-friendly, healthy vegetable which is onion.

ChicharOnion Corporation not just offers a piece of crunchy onion. Furthermore, the

company’s target market has an ease of making an option to the business’ three product variants

which are the onion fingers, onion rings, and the business’ specialty, the onion blooms. Aside

from that, these variety of deeply fried white onion snacks goes along with two extravagant

sauces which are the white dip and the dark dip.

Before the business was established, the whole board of members tried and tested the

accessibility of resources to be used in running the business and had a trial and error in deciding

on what the product should be. They aspired to market a product that was unique, affordable, and

delectable without compromising nutritional benefits. Afterwards, the owners of the business

conceptualized and strategized the proper implementation of the business objectives and how the

business will reach it after a given time frame. The incorporators of ChicharOnion Corporation

will be testing out the feasibility of the said business on their target market.

Chicharonion Corporation offers good quality products which would definitely be

satisfactory to its consumers. The business aims not only to satisfy the tastes of its consumers but

also to create a harmonious relationship with them in order to maintain the stability of the

business and to continuously provide services for its consumers. The corporation desires to

ensure that their products and services would be a lot beneficial to everyone.
Business Name

The name of the business ChicharOnion was derived from the two words; “chicharon”

and “onion”, because the product is essentially an ideal combination of the two. ChicharOnion is

basically a chicharon, except instead of being made from unhealthy meat belly, it is alternatively

made out of nutritious onions. Aside from that, ChicharOnion typically has a crunchy bite which

is relatively associated with the famous Filipino crunchable, chicharon.

Location

Establishing a business location has a big role in a business venture for it will be the

place where the business will sell their products. The incorporators chose the company’s location

through considering different aspects in establishing the entity. The owners of ChicharOnion

Corporation decided to establish the production site in Cambaog, Bustos, Bulacan while the main

distribution and selling site could be found in Poblacion Baliwag, Bulacan. The nearest landmark

to the said location is the St. Augustine Church and National Heroes Park. The landmarks are

only 20-30 meters away from the exact distribution site of the company.

The proposed target market have the following advantages:

Accessibility of Supplies and Resources. The proposed target market is near the

Baliwag Public Market and Savemore Market where all the resources and supplies to be used in
the distribution and selling of locally produced onion snacks are available and can be purchased

by any of the incorporators at ease in a friendly cost.

Geographical Climate. The proposed target market has a good temperature that can

preserve the products’ crunchiness for a longer period of time. However, the company’s product

only lasts for several hours to maintain its crunchy bite even though being preserved in a well-

conditioned location.

Government Policies. The proposed target market is located in Baliwag, Bulacan.

Moreover, the local government implemented a local ordinance avoiding single-use plastics and

cups. This enables the company to distribute its products without using these kinds of eco-

destructive plastics and could greatly save the environment’s future for younger or new

generations.

Engagement to Potential Consumers. The proposed initial target market of the business

is inside the school premise where Senior High School students have the purchasing power to

buy the company products. Aside from that, the incorporators will be able to socialize easily to

promote and market the products to the students and other potential consumers within the

vicinity.

Convenience. The way going through the proposed target market is at ease. The same

with delivering the goods from the production site up to the distribution site.

Target Market

The potential target market of the business are the constituents who live around Baliwag,

Bulacan. However, as the business is only beginning to establish itself, the company has decided

to aim a particular demographic when it comes to marketing the products in order to build a

foundation before propagating the products to a bigger area. The company’s initial target market
are Senior High School students whose age ranges from 15 to 19 years old but the product can be

sold to anyone regardless of their demographic profile. The product that the business is offering

is detoxifying and an excellent source of antioxidant which is good for the students to help fight

off various unwanted diseases. Aside from that, the company products have so many benefits to

provide their target market in terms of convenience, reasonable price and nutritional content.

Description of the Project

The business focuses on providing an alternative product for chicharon which is called

“chicharonion” or a chicharon that is made of white onion instead of pork. This product is

delicious and very affordable since the ingredients can always be accessed in the kitchen, and

way healthier. Furthermore, onions contain antioxidants that reduces cholesterol which may

lower the risks of having heart diseases, reduce high blood pressure and also contain cancer

fighting compounds. This project will benefit the people specially those who are not able to taste

chicharon due to religious and personal beliefs.

The chicharonion has three varieties which are onion rings, onion fingers, and onion

blooms. The market will surely enjoy the crunchiness of the chicharonion that they can buy at an

affordable price.

Brief Background History

The business was established on the year 2019 at Baliwag, Bulacan. It was incorporated

by nine people who came from the same school, Baliuag University. Due to the fact that the

incorporators desire to come up with a healthy yet scrumptious product for everyone, they

decided to provide a better version of “chicharon” which is a well-known Filipino snack.

Traditionally, it is manufactured by deep frying fat or the skin of pork which is enjoyed by many

Filipinos because of its crunchiness and tastiness. Most Filipinos eat it as is and aside from that,
it is also eaten as a viand along with rice. However, despite of it being a delicious snack, it is

high in cholesterol and sodium which is actually unhealthy. The team then thought of

substituting meat fat with onions, which are easier to get ahold of and manufactured compared to

meat belly and skin. Later on, the “chicharonion” product was made. Moreover, since onions are

vegetables rich in antioxidants, this allows the product to be vegan-friendly and halal.

Company Profile and Overview

ChicharOnion Corporation is a manufacturing business that satisfies the market’s

cravings through offering a nutritious bite. Since onions are greatly produced in the Philippines,

the incorporators decided to choose white onions to be the core of the products that the company

will offer in the market. In addition, the production volume of onions in the Philippines last 2018

was measured and derived with 172.7 thousand metric tons (Statista, 2019). Moreover, the

company will offer three different varieties of ChicharOnion; Onion Blooms, Onion Fingers and

Onion Rings. It is accompanied with two different dips; a creamy white sauce made with cheese

and béchamel and a flavorful dark sauce that tastes like barbecue. The main production site of

ChicharOnion Corporation can be found in Cambaog, Bustos, Bulacan while the main

distribution site will be found in Poblacion, Baliwag, Bulacan. The members of the business

decided to choose this type of business as it has an advantage of being a unique product on the

said market. Upholding a product which uses resources far from chances and probability of

meeting the scarcity in spite of high demand would have a great possibility to gain much profit

and will surely benefit the Philippine economy.

Running the
business

Figure 1. Business Cycle

A business is not established overnight. It is a process that takes time, patience,

consideration, and effort. In order to ensure that the business will be flourished, the entrepreneurs

must undergo different steps before opening one. Establishing ChicharOnion Corporation was no

different. Before ChicharOnion Corporation became a business, it was only just a vision—an

idea that the members wanted to bring to life. It was only upon continuous hard work and proper

planning that they were able to turn it into reality. The first thing that the members did was

brainstorm and then look for a business opportunity. This step includes examining potential

markets along with figuring out what possible needs or wants could a business be fulfilled.

Through this, the entrepreneurs came up with a product that can satisfy the market through

"filling the gap". After that, a business plan is developed. The business plan served as a guide in

establishing the business for it contains the data regarding how the product will be sold, how
resources can be used effectively and efficiently, how and where to distribute the products, and

other information relevant to forming the company. Once it was accomplished, the next step

would be determining the capital needed for the business. This is one of the most imperative

steps because the entrepreneurs need to guarantee if they have sufficient resources, especially

financially, when achieving their goals. Once the capital is determined, the last thing left to do is

to run the business. The members of the business carefully supervised and involved themselves

in the business operations, making sure that the products produced are of high-quality. Other

members are tasked with marketing and product promotion, coming up with unique tactics and

ideas regarding on how to disperse the products into the public. As part of this process, the

members decided to produce samples, allowing potential customers to taste the product and give

their feedbacks which would help the business to be improved. Through this, they will be able to

find out if establishing business is achievable. Once they have completed the process,

ChicharOnion products are ready to be sold and put on the market.

Marketing Strategy

The business conducted a research which aims to carefully study everything—from

potential products, target markets, and promotional tactics. This intends to identify and study the

possible consumers whose needs are to be satisfied which gives the business an opportunity. This

also studies the competitors, helping the company to be able to come up with strategies that will

differentiate the business, making it stand out in the marketplace. The business plans to execute a

border marketing strategy in order to not just simply build name recognition and awareness but

also to build deep and meaningful relationships with its target customers.

Product Strategy
ChicharOnion Corporation aims to improve the nutrition and health of its customers by

providing a healthy chicharon that is made from onion. The intention of the business is to

decrease calories, cholesterol, and trans-fat intake. With this being said, the business decided to

substitute the meat skin with onions. The products will be made up with fresh ingredients and

will be served in good plating and packaging to urge customers to avail the products. It will also

be served with two varieties of dip sauce—a white dip which is made from béchamel/cream

cheese sauce and a dark dip, made from barbecue sauce. The initial target market of the business

is the Senior High School Students from Baliuag University. Despite this, ChicharOnion

products can be eaten by people of all ages for it is a good scrumptious treat for young people

and a healthy snack for old people.

● Goals

1. Acquire loyal customers

2. Expand the business internationally

2. To build more branches in the country

Product Description

White onions are the main component of the company’s products. This type of onion is

known for its sweet non-pungent taste, making it ideal to be used in making the company’s
products which are the onion rings, onion fingers and onion blooms. Due to its high sugar

content, white onions have a short shelf life; but when refrigerated, it can last up to a month at

most. The first product of the business is the onion fingers, which is basically a part of onion

blooms. This variant of the business’ product was made to serve the market and let them taste the

product once at the lowest price. Once the target market totally engaged to the business’ product,

they might buy the company’s specialty—onion blooms. The second product of ChicharOnion

Corporation is the onion rings, which is known for its crunchy skin and savoury taste. It is

shaped like a ring and is breaded to achieve the crispy exterior. The last product is the blooming

onion which beautifully resembles a lotus flower. Its outsides are crispy while the inside is juicy

and sweet. The onion is skilfully sculpted before dredging and deep frying, leaving the roots

intact, and then breaded before frying until it opens like a flower. The products come with two

dipping options which are the béchamel/cream cheese sauce and a barbeque sauce that perfectly

match the fried goods. These can be served as an appetizer and as a snack which serves as a

healthy alternative to junk foods because onions are packed with nutrients and is proven to act as

an antioxidant.

Pricing Strategy

blooms offer different prices that could have a great benefit and will surely could be afforded by

Product Description

Promoting one of the country’s most popular delicacies is one of the main goals of the

company. The product is not only able to satisfy the crunchy cravings, but it is also a healthier

option in comparison to other brands of chicharon. The Filipino snack with a modern twist is

something that will ignite the curiosity of the potential buyers, making them try the product. The

two kinds of dip are also a factor that will affect the business for giving consumers different

choices related to their purchase which could make them want to try both options to see which

one they prefer.

Production Flow

Before the ChicharOnion Corporation was established, each incorporator gave an idea of

what business to build. Many suggestions were presented until the incorporators decided to focus

more on producing snacks. Chicharon is one of the delicacies in the Philippines. But some

Filipinos do not want to eat this food, specially the oldies, because they are typically worried

about their health. One incorporator proposed that the business should develop a product that

will serve as a healthier substitute to chicharon. Instead of using meat, the business will use

white onion as an alternative. All of the business owners agreed to the idea and they ended up

building the ChicharOnion Corporation. After deciding on what business to build, the business

owners started to formulate a plan of how to produce the company’s product. The incorporators

made a wise decision on what production method they should use that will be best for the

business. Afterwards, the business owners began to find a good and reliable supplier of the

resources to be used by the company. The resources’ origin were strictly examined by the

business owners. Many trials have been done until the incorporators get the precise measurement

of the product ingredients. When the product development was completed, the business members
officially decided the price that the product will cater to the market through a breakdown

computation of expenses and number of products made. The sales and marketing department of

the business also focused on their strategies on how the business will market the products.

of directors who invested on the business. They collectively made abusiness decisions,

collaborate on how to further improve the products, and strategize regarding how to gain a larger

amount of net income. The advantages and disadvantages are as follows:

Advantages

they invested in the business—they only risk their own equity.

meaning that the business can run for as long as there is someone that is

willing to run it.

Disadvantages

of directors doesn’t agree on matters regarding the business.

2. Corporations usually pay double taxation.

3. Filing the business is difficult, pricey, and lengthy.

4. Decision-making is time-consuming for it relies on the vote of not just one

person, but the entire board of directors before arriving at a decision.

5. Because multiple people are involved in running the business, confidentiality

regarding business matters is hard to maintain for every important detail

pertaining to the business must be discussed at group meetings.
