1. Introduction
Congratulations! You have just acquired the Clever Devices Intelligent Vehicle Network™
(IVN™), the world’s finest automated passenger information system and on-board computer. The
IVN™ system will provide your transit authority with years of reliable service while providing
the riding public with accurate and timely information as, required by the Americans With
Disabilities Act.

This manual will provide you with information on the proper use of this product. It is intended to
be both a quick reference guide (see the “Quick Start” section beginning on page 4) and a
comprehensive listing of all IVN™ functions. Readers will also find information in this manual
on troubleshooting and ordering spare parts.

Standing behind IVN™ is a team of professionals dedicated to keeping your system running
smoothly. If you have any questions about the information given in this manual, please call Clever
Devices’ Technical Support help line at (800) 872-6129 and we will make every attempt to answer
your questions. Our help line is available between 8:30 AM and 5:00 PM Eastern Standard Time,
Monday through Friday.

2. Intelligent Vehicle Network™ Overview

In its effort to assist transit authorities in complying with the Americans With Disabilities Act,
Clever Devices has developed the Intelligent Vehicle Network™ (IVN™). The network serves as
the on-board vehicle computer and provides automatic stop, route, and destination announcements.
It stores data from the bus and reports it back to the depot to assist maintenance and operations
activities. This data describes engine, transmission and other system performance and faults, as
well as revenue and passenger counts. All information can be collected and stored on a
route/stop/timestamp basis. The data is retrieved automatically from each bus via a wireless data
transmission system.

IVN™ provides transfer information, public service announcements and “stop requested”
announcements. The system also provides a “variable message” sign to enable information to be
displayed to on-board passengers. The sign typically shows the next stop, transfer information, the
“Stop Requested”, and the current date and time.

IVN™ can be connected to other intelligent systems on the vehicle, such as destination sign
systems and fare equipment. IVN™ system allows the operator to control all connected on-board
systems from the keypad on the vehicle’s control head.

The IVN™ controller is the central computer for the IVN™ system. It is stored in a locked
compartment on the vehicle and is accessed by maintenance personnel for hardware updates or
service. The controller contains a data storage card that can hold the transit authority’s entire
route structure. Therefore, any bus can run on any route without exchanging cards.

The IVN™ controller incorporates a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver, which works in
conjunction with GPS satellites to determine the vehicle’s location. When communication with
satellites is lost because the vehicle is traveling through dense tree coverage, tall buildings,
tunnels or other obstacles, the system will use dead reckoning and the Clever Devices Logical
Positioning System to determine the vehicle’s exact position.

The IVN™ system has been designed to allow the bus operator to drive the vehicle normally.
Doors can be opened at any time, and lane changes and normal wheel slippage in snowy or icy
conditions will not affect the system’s performance. The system also detects detours from the
assigned route, and recognizes when the bus returns to the route.

In addition to all of these functions, the IVN™ system serves as the vehicle’s Public Address
(PA) amplifier for microphone, or non-automated, announcements. The operator simply has to
press the microphone foot switch one second prior to beginning the announcement, and release
the switch one second after finishing it.

3. IVN™ System Architecture
The IVN system integrates numerous on-board electronic systems, and its controller transmits the
data from these systems to depot-based servers. The controller also receives signals from GPS
satellites that pinpoint a vehicle’s location, as well as software updates from the servers.

4. Quick Start
To immediately begin operating the IVN™ system and activate its most-common functions,
follow the instructions given below. For detailed information about the system and operating
procedures, refer to Section 5, Operating the IVN™ System in Automatic Mode, beginning on
page 5.

Note: In this manual, the names of individual screens are written in bold text (i.e. Main
Menu), and SoftKey names are written in bracketed bold text (i.e. <SoftKey Name>).

 Start the bus and close all doors.

 Login to the system using the Operator ID number. The Run Entry Screen opens (see Figure
6Error! Reference source not found. on page 8)
 Using the number keys, enter a run number and then press the <Enter> SoftKey.
 The Main Screen opens, showing the first route and stop for the selected block (see Figure on
page 8).
 Go to any stop on the selected route.
 Open and close the front doors. The System Status field will display “On Route” on IVN™
systems.
 Drive the route as normal.

The system automatically plays stop audio and displays stop information on the vehicle’s
interior sign along the route. The system will play route and destination announcements
outside the vehicle when doors are opened.

When the vehicle detours from the route, the system suspends announcements and display, and
“Off Route” is shown as the system status. Upon returning to the route, the announcements and
display will resume.
