Seasonal Affective disorder (SAD), is a form of depression often associated with

late autumn and winter/is a type of depression that occurs and re-occurs during
the fall and winter months.

Most people experience some seasonal changes in feeling of well-being and

behaviors, such as energy, sleep, eating problems and mood to a greater or
lesser degree.

People with seasonal affective disorder have changes in mood and behavior that
are powerful that they produce significant problems in their lives.

Symptoms

Similar to depression

 low mood
 lack of interest and enjoyment in life
 low energy
 being less sociable
 less interest in sex.

Atypical symptoms/different from depression

 increased sleep, with associated daytime somnolence

 daytime fatigue
 increased appetite; in particular carbohydrate and chocolate cravings
 weight gain

You may find it hard to wake up on a winter's morning and can often feel sleepy
during the day.

SAD gets better in the spring. Indeed, around a third of people with SAD have a
time when they feel more energetic than usual during the spring and summer.

POSSIBLE CAUSES

The serotonin connection

Low levels of serotonin are thought to contribute to

depression, and serotonin production slows down
with fewer hours of sunlight.
The melatonin connection

Darkness triggers the release of the hormone

melatonin, which controls sleeping and eating.one
theory suggests that like hibernating mammals,
some humans produce more melatonin in the winter
months.
The circadian rhythm connection

The transition from summer to winter changes the

time that melatonin is released and this throws the
body’s natural clock out of sync, potentially
triggering the symptoms of SAD.
