INTRODUCTION

As years had passed, the emergence of robotics is evolving around the

world. Robot technologies are evolving exponentially, particularly as they

converge with other functionality such as artificial intelligence to learn from their

environment, from each other, and from humans. Robots are widely used in

manufacturing, assemble and packing, transport, earth and space exploration,

surgery, weaponry, laboratory research and mass production of consumer and

industrial goods (Bellis, 2019).

Nowadays, robots moves independently which makes it more

convenient. They are also amongst the most reliable machines in operation.

Commercial and industrial robots are now in widespread use, performing jobs

more cheaply and with greater accuracy, reliability and require comparatively

low levels of supervision and maintenance than humans. Robots are also used

for jobs which are dangerous and complex to be suitable for humans. New and

great inventors build robots that can move with accuracy, completing repetitive

tasks at high speed for long periods day and night. There are many inventors

who invented their own robots and each of those has their own purposes and

uses which can contribute well in our economy and help the people according

to their necessities. Robotics is consider as a huge field to cover as it involves a

lot of various aspects of electronics, programming, computer science and

mathematics. The improving and having new innovation of science and

technology in our modern world has a significant change for our future.

Going back to its roots, those pioneers who help develop robots made a

huge impact to our society. With them, innovation and the brilliant ideas
sprouted upon the minds of creative people. Inventing robots is a challenge;

this takes a lot of effort and time to assemble since it composes complex parts

and needs higher knowledge in programming and electronics. There are a lot of

aspiring inventors out there which has the potential to create efficient robots

that solves more problems we encounter in our daily lives.

Purpose of the study

1. To inspire and motivate student like us to make a robot by knowing and

learning the experiences of an inventor;

2. To give us knowledge in making a robot;

3. To influence the youth to open up and exhibit or show off their creative

ideas by inventing a robot; and

4. To activate the minds of people and practice innovation.

Significance of the study

Robots take huge part in our modern society. Nowadays, it is important to

study robotics because we are surrounded by upgraded technologies and

inventors that have creative minds.

a) School-

Robotics helps address the growing demand for teaching science,

technology, engineering and math in schools. As well as exemplifying

technology directly by programming the robot, students also learn about

science, engineering and math and get an understanding of how these subjects

link together. (Sterling, 2015)

b) Students-

Robotics helps students to increase the creative minds to have the

opportunity to create something tangible, to interest and retain more information

such as programming skills, logical thinking, computer skills and skills in

electronics. Working through frustration helps student to develop and impart

determination which shows a never-give-up attitudes and it boost their minds to

promote and generate a culture of teamwork, turning frustration into innovation.

It helps them to prepare for their future which they can come up with new

innovative ideas and be equipped with the knowledge to design and create the

technology needed.

c) Environment

Robotics can endure hostile environment of implementary space, they

are made that the planetary atmosphere do not affect their physical state and

performance. They can replace human beings in many areas of work and can

shoulder greater responsibilities and programs to manage themselves. They

can be use of the people when the human safety to concern. (Saffar, 2016)

d) Economy

Robotics is useful in the industry becoming present in more and more

situation to business, extremely useful in a variety of sectors and situations.

The rise of the machines helps the system of the economy, which the

productivity growth gives a higher using standards and greater variety of

product and services.

Research Questions

1. What are the experiences of robot makers in building robot?

2. What are the realizations of a robot maker to build robot?

3. What insights of the researcher can be generated from this study?

Research Procedures

In order to satisfy the purpose of our research paper, a qualitative

research was held. We chose our subject by conducting an In- Depth interview

and asking him some questions that are related on his experiences and

struggles in making his own robot. And since it is a narrative research design,

we will be focused more on his biography. He narrated his experiences and

struggles in inventing robots. He also gave advices to those aspiring inventors.

After the interview, the group transcribed and interpreted the result.

Report of Stories

We interviewed a Grade 12 student of Philippine Science High School

Southern Mindanao Campus named Clint Eldrick R. Petilla, a robot innovator.

He attended pre-school at Rainbows Angel’s Learning Center Incorporated;

elementary at Butuan City SPED; and currently studying high school at

Philippine Science High School Southern Mindanao Campus. He is the

youngest son of Mrs. Mariam R. Petilla who is currently a 3rd year student in

college pursuing law and Mr. Glen A. Petilla a government worker. His hobbies

are playing badminton, basketball, and he also plays instruments like piano and

guitar.

The interviewee described the experiences of a robot maker in building

a robot. He said that he started building robots at the age of 17. According to

him, he did not chose robotics but robotics chose him. He specializes in physics

and mechanics and it inspired him to pursue robotics. Building a robot is very

technical. There are three phases in robotics: the prototype, prototype planning

and testing phase. In building a robot, you should always start with a plan and
an objective. You need to have a problem and find ways to solve it. Always

choose a problem and have an objective that you have a passion in it.

The whole process will most likely take 1 year in the making. His project

is titled Development of an Ultrasonic Sensor-Based Mobility Aid System for the

Blind, a kinematic robot that can detect approaching objects as well as

obstacles, ascending or descending slopes or stairs in the path of the user, and

issues an alert seconds before collision to allow reorientation or dodging. This

device is intended to use by the blind people to help them navigate their

surroundings. The best thing about robotics is that it is less tiring and cheaper

than biology or chemistry research. It is also less complicated because it is just

all about coding and assembling parts unlike biology and chemistry, you will

need a lot of apparatus and clearance.

Robotics is not that easy. You will encounter difficulties in coding which

is sometimes frustrating because even one small typo mistake can result to

error. If you fail to connect the wires in their right place, the device will not

function. So you really need to be careful and be meticulous. It might be

frustrating at the start but as you see your effort take shape all the hardships

will pay off and you will feel happy and satisfied. Robotics has a huge impact in

our society. It made our life easier and it contributed greatly in different aspects

of our life.

In the near future, he is not yet sure if he will make another robot but

on the other hand, he is planning to use his project as thesis in college. He

plans to improve the device so that it can be used by fast vehicles. If given a

chance to teach and share his knowledge, Clint prefers to teach students who

have background knowledge about coding and basic assembling.

Summary

Our technology is continuously developing. New and more innovative

ways are being discovered for example, the emergence of robots. The word

“robot” is first used in 1921 by Crezh playwrite Karl Capek. The history of

robotics has its origin in the ancient world. Because of its helpful contribution

and use, more robots are invented (Simon, 2018). The Unimate was the first

industrial robot ever built in 1961 by George Devol and Joseph Engelberger

(“The First Industrial Robot”, 2019). After that, many aspiring innovators and

inventors are inspired and start building robots. People get more curious and

new ideas are being produced by their creative minds with the aim of making life

easier and better which can change the world.

One of those aspiring innovator is Clint Eldrick R. Petilla who innovated a

robot which is used by blind people. According to him, the robot detects

approaching object as well as obstacles in the path of the user and notifies the

user seconds before it collides so that the user can adjust their paths. In making

a robot, one should have a plan and objective to solve the problem.

Conclusion

Everyone should know what robotics is and acknowledge its great

contributions in our society. It helped a lot of people and opened many

opportunities. As we explore the world of robotics, we realized that we need to

have background knowledge about programming, arduino, skills in electronics

and be a computer literate. Making a robot is a complex and long process.

Robotics is really hard and sometimes frustrating but despite this, robotics is

actually fun to learn and it challenges you to work hard. It is interesting and
educational because you will discover and learn a lot in the process. Your mind

will be exercise and improves your critical thinking skills. It increases your ability

to be creative and innovative. You will develop team work and cooperative skills

which is useful in future employment. With the growing demand of technology

related jobs, learning robotics can help you have a better future just like what

happened to the other inventors and innovators. In making or studying robots

you must have the passion and it must be according on your interest so that the

output of your research will be successful because it is not an easy task which

you need to spend a lot of time, patience, money and effort.

Questions:

1. What are the experiences of robot makers in building robot?

1.1. At what age did you start building robots? What pushes you to do it?

1.2. How long does it take to build a robot?

“Ok so that is very technical, so sa robot man gud there are three

phases ang prototype, tung planning prototype, and testing phase. So ang

planning siguro is mga 3-6 weeks and ang prototyping na rin is mga 4-6

months so prototyping is included na nang pag build, pag assemble, pag

code napud kag balik so endless cycle na sya, so all in all mga 6-8 months

siguro, mga one year gud sya. For four quarters or good for 2 sem jud na

sya siguro.”

Translation:

Okay that is very technical, so in robotics there are three phases:

the prototype, prototype planning and testing phase. In planning it would

take 3-6 weeks and the prototyping it would take 4-6 months, so in

prototyping it includes building, assembling and coding and that is the step

by step procedure which is needed to be adjust until you will discover some

new methods and lastly you will test it, well it is quite difficult because if

there is any error in the result you need to go back and check the

prototyping and you will do the coding again, well it is an endless cycle, so

all in all it would take 6-8 months, I think it would take one year and it is

good for 4 quarters or for 2 semesters.

1.3. What kind of robot did you make? Kindly explain it.

“Umm actually hindi sya robot but device siya na nagaread ug

distance sa akong.. for example ang robot nako gibuilt its not like a robot

but machine sya na makadetect ug distance so akong project title is

Development of an Ultrasonic Sensor-Based Mobility Aid System [title sa

research niya] so mura syag kinematics na kinematics sya na robot na

makaread out ug distance ug how many seconds so how many seconds left

before collision, so kung tan-awon nimo ang isa ka object ang device kay

makameasure siya ug from a person to an obstacle 4 meters, so kung

nagaduol na ang person sa wall magbaba man ang distance, so ganahan

namo idetermine is how many seconds sya before sya mabangga sa wall,

initial position over final time minus initial time so with is basahon nya ang

distance nimo at 0 second and sa second nya, for example at 1 second

nimo ang delta x ug displacement over ang time difference. So imagine

nimo ang among robot nagacompute na sya ug 6000. I mean not 6000, 600

cycles per second. So imagine ninyo ang computation ana so with that

maestimate nimo, how many seconds before collision so among giset 0 to 5

seconds. Kung hapit ang 5 to 4 kay weak pa ang vibration, kung 0 to 1

kay kusog na kaau ang the last 30 cms is magcontinuously magvibrate ang

devive. For the slope is paslanting man sya so kabalo naman ta sa SOH

CAH TOA, ang opposite ug something something like that is instead 4

so giset namo plus minus 10 degrees. So kung sloping up is 1 cycle per

continuos vibration kung naay sloping up ug sloping down katong ingon

nako earlier one incline, two descent mao na sya.”

Translation:

Actually its not a robot but a device that can read distance for

my…For example, the robot that I built is not like a robot but a machine that

can detect distance so my project title is Development of an Ultrasonic

Sensor-Based Mobility Aid System so its like a kinematic robot that can be

able to read out the distance and tell how many seconds left before the

collision. So if we are going to look on an object, the device can measure

the distance from a person to an obstacle 4 meters away, so if the person

[referring to a blind person] is walking near in the wall, the distance will

decrease. So we like to determine how many seconds before he/she bump

in the wall, so we need to apply the calculus which is the derivatives

because final position minus initial position over final time minus initial time

so with this is it can be able to read the distance at 0 second and on its

second, for example, at 1 second, the device will read the distance. So if

you subtract the distance, you can get the delta x and displacement over

the time difference. So imagine, that our robot can be able to compute

6000, I mean not 6000 but 600 cycles per second. So imagine the

computation of it so with that, you can estimate how many seconds before

collision so we set it to 0 to 5 seconds. If it is close to 5 to 4 then the

vibration is weak, if it is 0 to 1 then it is strong. In the last 30 cms, the device

will continue to vibrate. For the slope, since its position is slanting so we

know the SOH, CAH, TOA, the opposite and something something like that

is instead of 4 meters, the range will be in 3 meters, instead of 5 seconds it

will be 3 seconds that a device will detect but we did a ten degree cross

minus. For example, if there is a stone that is detected, it will alarm ahhh it
is not sensitive, so we set it to plus minus 10 degrees. So if it is sloping up,

there is 1 cycle per second because it slopes up. If it is sloping down, there

will be 2 cycle per second because it is descent, that is why we need it to

check. If you are a blind person, especially if the feedback is tactile, tactile

means touch so instead of sound, the output of the device is the vibration.

So if the object is going near and nearer, the vibration will continue.

1.4. Can you tell us, what is the best thing about robotics?

“Ang best things sa robotics is sige compared sa bio or chem na

research is dili kaayo sya kapoy ,ay kapoy mn sya pero dili sya kaayo sa

expensive sa lots. So for example ako kay oh I’ll admit 10,000 ang among

kuan robot pero one time use lng sya like mag-order lng kag parts,

Compared sa bio or

Translation:

The best thing in robotics is…okay , compared to bio or chem

research is that it is less tiring, not really tiring but it is not really expensive

in lots. So for example, I admit that the cost of our robot is Php 10,000 but it
is for one time use only, like you are going to order its parts, assemble and

the rest is the usage of electricity. Compared to bio and chem is example,

you need to order bacteria and before that, the clearance will be needed.

You need to have a bio safety cabinet, the apparatus and sac hem, the

MSDS and also you have to buy things in abroad or the safety cabinets to

store the chemicals. Ahhhhh, robotics research is kinda easier because its

all about coding and ofcourse you need to have a skills about coding. It is

not the same in bio that you need to appulate the spreading of bacterias

and colonizing it or in chem, in mixing the bacteria, you need to condense it

or mix the chemicals so I can say that robotics is less tasking.

1.5. How does it feel to build robots?

“Siguro umm, frustrating sya sa start ug makahilak ka kay asa nimo

kuhaon ang kwarta, ang part unsaon nimo pag-assemble, kay kapoy diay

ang pagsoldering kay magmelt pa ka, magsunogsunog like magdry imong

mata pero kadugayan magwork ang device, mahappy na mn ka ug

mareward ang imong efforts, sa imong hardships for example you have the

opportunity to work your device kay pwede nimo iimprove ug pwede nimo

laing needs or sa laing problem for example sensor for the blind pwede

nimo sya marechargeable sya, pwede sa magglow in the dark, pwde nimo

sya butngan ug reflectors, iexpand ang range source. Siguro sa first part I

know, I admit na pangit jud ang robotics research unya gamay ra jud ang

device, tangible.”
Translation:

Maybe ummm, it is frustrating in the start and also you feel down because

of the expenses, how you assemble the parts, because in soldering is tiring.

You need to melt, burn, like your eyes will be irritated but in the long run the

device will work. You will be happy and rewarded because of your efforts

and hardship. For example, you have the opportunity to work the device

because you can improve, debug and expand the functionality to cater the

needs and problem. For example, sensor for the blind you can make it

rechargeable, it can be glow in the dark, you can add reflectors and expand

the range source. Maybe in the first part, I admit that robotics research is

not my passion, because the robotics research in pisay is limited compared

to bio and chem but in the long run the results will work out and you have a

tangible device to show.

1.6. What is your most memorable experiences in robotics?

“One memorable experience in robotics is tung moment nagwork na

ang code ug perfect ug tama ang editing for example how many times

nagbalikbalik, how many times nag-error ug nakit.an nimo ang red sa

mi diri” makaingon jud ko in every time in this, there is still an end.”

Translation:

One memorable experience in robotics was the moment that the

coding works and it is perfect and also the editing. For example , is how

many times that you repeated the coding, how many errors that you

experience and seeing the red color on your screen doing the compile, run

again and again. There is that one moment in compiling, checking the

program if it will function, while beeping, there will be a light flashing. The

motor sensor will vibrate, so actually you will feel the worst time in your life,

but if the device will work and the code is correct and everything will work

you feel rewarded and the “haha” moment. Finally the device is working,

and now we can graduate. I can tell that in every time there is till an end.

1.7. What struggles you have experience in building robot?

“Some struggles, one is kapoy jud sya kaayo kay more on coding

nimo, di ka kabalo and kung sa research paper is a lot of paper works na

understand sa imong panelists unya kailangan nimo iexplain code for code,

line for line para how your program works. And siguro ang challenges is

kanang for example dli mag on ang buhaton kay idetach nimo ang circuit

kung makuryentehan ka kay….naay kuryente or pagtouch nimo wala, so

kung tama ba imong circuit or dili.”

Translation:

Some struggles, first is it is really tiring because it is more on coding

then for example, you forgot the brace, you don’t know what part you will

start and end or the semi colons. And in research paper, it has a lot of

paper works since you need to copy paste the codes then explain it to the

panelist so it is a little bit hard process because in explaining, you need to

lower your level so that your panelist will be able to understand then you

need to explain code for code, line for line on how your program works. And

maybe the challenge is like for example the device is not functioning so you

need to detach the circuit, if you get electrocuted it means that the

electricity is functioning if not there no electricity, it’s just like that, you need

perseverance to work and check if the circuit are right or wrong.

2. What are the realizations of a robotic maker to build robot?

2.1. What have you realized about the impact does robotics gave in to your

life?

“Impacts sa robotics kay for example kanang (daghan kaayo) lets

start with, kanang one is ang cars, kung wala pay cars siguro wala pang

tao from one point to another.

impact. Although sa first part kay medyo inefficient siya or kalas og energy

nay mga shortcomings pero on the long run kay mangita mag

improvements or way nga maimprove para mahimo siyang efficient og ang

Translation:

Impacts of robotics, for example, there is a lot, okay let us start with

cars. If there are no cars, there is no robotics. No cars, no travelling. We will

have an easier transportation, from one point to other. Next is that for

building, raw materials such as woods, coal, plastics or any other raw

materials because without robotics, the progress of the manufacture of the

materials is different specially now the train law is now approve, taxes

would be different. Third, it has impact in the environment although in the

first part it wasted a lot of energy that can cause shortage but in the long

run they find improvements or a way to improve things for it will be efficient

and its reliability is better compared to the previous machines.

2.2. What best advice can you give to those who want to build a robot or

those aspiring inventors?

“My message is first always start with a plan and an objective kay

wala mangud nagpataka og buhat og robot. We don’t build out of

something without nothing.

moving objects.

mahimu siyang better device compare sa atung first gihimo.”

Translation:

My message is first always start with a plan and an objective

because there is no one else who built a robot without a plan. We don’t

build something without anything. You need to have a problem and then

solve it or a format to the things a format to the things you needed to do.

Always choose a problem and have an objective that you have a passion in

it. For example, my robots can solve problem in mechanics or kinematics.

So it should be your favorite subject, just incase you will be frustrated in

having problems in your results or you want to improve something, you

won’t wasting your time and you will strive harder to invent and to adjust or

you want to improve something in your device for it will be a better device

than before.

Why did you choose robotics?

“Robotics? I didn’t choose robotics but robotics choose me. Ang topic man

So since ang bio, wala man na accept ang bio ug chem,

So kaya ang physics nalang adto dayun mi to robotics, medyo feasible siya na

plan.”

Translation:

Robotics? I didn’t choose robotics but robotics chooses me. In our topic we

would choose three research topics and our topic candidate is bio chem and
physics. So since the bio… the bio and chem was not accepted. So we chose

physics and we immediately went to robotics, it’s a little bit feasible plan.

What inspires you to pursue robotics?

“So ang inspirations ko is the field of physics and mechanics kay

syempre kay ako nag specialized naman ko sa physics and technologies so

So that includes arduino,

programming and yah, katong mga coding.”

Translation:

My inspiration in pursuing robotics is the field of physics and

mechanics. Ofcourse, I specialized in physics and technologies so I don’t really

focus in the concept of biology and chemistry instead in the field of robotics and

mechanics that inclined in science which includes the study of arduino,

programming, and also coding.

What is your future plan in robotics?

“Siguro umm.. since ang akong project 1 katong Development of an

Ultrasonic Sensor-Based Mobility Aid System so siguro ang future nako is

Translation:

Maybe ummm…..since my project 1 is about Development of An

Ultrasonic Sensor-Based Mobility Aid System so maybe my future is I will use it

on my thesis in college so that I can better develop it instead of my target is for

the blind people and maybe for fast vehicles such as bicycles and cars.
Are you gonna build another robot in the near future?

“Well I don’t know, who knows. Siguro kay if ganahan lang ko or basig

kailangan kay para maka graduate. Actually nagbuhat rakog robot para maka

graduate Hahahaha.”

Translations:

Well I don’t know, who knows. Maybe if I wanted to or because it is

needed for us to pass Actually, I built a robot to be able for me to graduate.

Hahahaha.

Do you believe robotics can change the world?

“Yes, ofcourse. Eversince na nagstart ang industrial revolution kay

nagstart na jud ang change of life ang mga machines. Siguro sa mga 18

hundreds?

na tah na were coming for 5th revolution. So siguro makachange na siya in a lot

of aspects.

Ug ang third is

the buttom naa nadayon results.”

Translation:
Yes, ofcourse. Eversince the industrial revolution started, the life of

machines begins to change. Maybe in the 18 hundredths? We are now in

information age which we are coming for 5th revolution. So maybe it can change

in a lot of aspects. For example, in military and warfare, instead of a human or

dog who will defuse the bombs is we can use robots to do it by controlling it so

that a human will not harm. Next is the mass produce or mass production of the

objects. For example, the cars, the signs or the buildings which robotics is

usually the one who is the controller. And the third is the information gatherings

of the GSIS, the remote sensing of drones in the data gathering which is easier

compared to the old models, now you can fly the drone and take picture in just

one click and then you can see the result.

If given a chance, are you willing to teach people about robotics?

“Siguro, depende sya kung unsa akung iteach og kang kinsa pud

akuang iteach.

breadboarding skills or kanang magwire kanang mga positive, negative ana.

Translation:

Maybe it depends on what will I teach or whom will I teach. Maybe, I want

to teach if the children or students have already background knowledge about

codings, basic breadboarding skills or in wiring like the positive and negative,

like that. And maybe to reach out and share my skills that I learned and be able

to give back to community about my learnings here in Pisay.
