I have grown artistically in various ways. One of those ways is that I have
improved in contrasting and adding shading to my drawing to make it seem more
realistic and stand out. My first drawing, the “Draw What You Know Assignment”
includes a lot of different types of shading. Areas like the tree, grass, and cat are darkly
shaded whereas the hills and the moon are a medium tone and the sky is shaded
lightly. Although everything is evenly toned out, it isn’t blended very well and it could be
shaded better so that the drawing can stand out. My second drawing, the “Basic forms
Observational Drawing” has better contrasting than the first. Compared to the two
drawings, the second drawing pops out much more than the first one. This drawing
shows that I can differentiate dark, medium and lighter tones from each other. Every
object is shaded depending on how dark or light it is. The shadow’s following these
objects are also shaded accordingly. Another skill that I have improved in is detailing.
The objects in my second drawing have wording, and dimension to it, making it much
more detailed than my first piece of artwork.
The work I chose proves that I have grown. The “Draw What you Know
Assignment” shows where I started this year as an artist. Thinking back, I struggled with
understanding how to make my artwork more detailed using toning, contrast and
dimension. These were some skills that I wanted to get better at so I could make my
drawing look better and more realistic. The thing that helped me most was practice.
Sometimes, when I was bored, I would practice drawing so that I can improve in these
skills and techniques to reach my goal. The artwork that shows how far I’ve come is the
“Basic Forms Observational Drawing.” It shows my improvement because I got better at
detailing the artwork using dimension, toning and contrast. Compared to the drawing I
used to show where I was at, at the start of the year, it looks more realistic and overall
better quality.
Some creative solutions that I came up with to deal with challenges that I faced
along the way were planning out the format and then adding to the layout. I started off
with making the base, then I added the details, contrast, and shading to it. This was a
solution that I found to be most helpful and compatible with my drawing techniques. It
made it easier to avoid any mishaps that would ruin my artwork. I am most proud of my
improvement. I can see a big difference from my first chosen artwork to my second
chosen artwork. I could have added color into my drawings to make them even better.
Some things that I learned while making this project is that I work best when I have
everything planned out in front of me. I also learned how to improve detailing in artworks
and got better at multiple techniques. I will continue to interpret this into my future
artworks.
