WHAT IS A PROJEC DATA BOOK?

It is any written record indicating all undertakings and research works
from start to finish. Taking photographs during the process, saving copy of
appropriate screen shots are parts of the project data book. As information
and data are fully gathered, record results and interpretations via dummy
tables, charts, or even graphs. A project data book (also known as scientific
logbook or journal notebook) is the heart of any Science Investigatory Project
(SIP). It is a detailed account of all parts and undertakings of your SIP from
brainstorming about topics, preparation of materials and set-ups,
experimentation, data collection and analysis, and conclusions. This will serve
as a documented evidence or proof for all relevant activities happened. It is
also subject to scrutiny by a research adviser.

IMPORTANCE OF DOCUMENTING SIP-RELATED ACTIVITIES

Keeping a project data book is vitally important to science investigatory

project whether you are an experienced student researcher or a first time
DFOT participant. Here are some tips to remember:
● Use the approved format of project data book (see the attached
enclosure). Print the copy and accomplish the form by handwriting.
● Write journal entries in pen and not in pencil. This is a permanent record of
all activities related with your SIP.
● Number the entries in your logbook before using it. Do not forget to include
the date for every entry. Each entry should be narrated briefly.
● Do it regularly. Write everything about works relevant to your study even if
it seems insignificant. That would be useful at the latter part.
● Include any other evidence that could be useful in documenting the
process such as screenshots of emails, purchase receipts, photographs,
and the likes. A reflection section can be incorporate in project data book.
● It is a must to include any changes, modifications, and alternations made
to experimental procedures even if they are mishaps, failures, or mistakes.
● Write all observations made during your experimentation. Put your
signature or initial and date your mark out.
