The team I have often referred to as the “sisters team.” I have also called them
the best all-around track team I ever coached. The team was small (only seventeen
members), but seven of them were seniors, and eleven of them became all-stars. What
made this team truly unique was the fact that there were six sets of sisters on the roster.
Lowville won the Frontier League Relays, placing first in three events. Jen
Sweredoski and Heather Crossman won the 2x400 hurdles, Laurie Reagan, Jen Ryan,
Becky Swartzentruber, and Chantel Martin won the DMR, and Angie Jones, Emily
McAuliffe, Katie McAuliffe, and Sarah Herr won the 4x200 relay.
In a nonleague meet at Sauquoit during spring break, Katie McAuliffe (a 5th year
varsity sprinter) asked to try the 1500 meter run. Katie not only won the event, but she
beat all the boys who were on the track at the same time. Katie went on to lower the
school record in the 800 by nearly three seconds.
Senior Kathleen Dunckel stretched her sprinting to the 400 dash and went on to
secure the school record in that event.
We once again dominated the RMI meet, winning by 61 points in the twelve team
event.
The Frontier League Meet was one for the ages. Watertown had a dominating
team, with five superstars that easily beat us in our dual meet. An injury to Malisa
Martin left us without the fastest 100 dash runner in the league, but the rest of the team
came up big. Fifteen out of sixteen girls competing scored points. We placed two or
more in the top six in nine events. We placed first in only two events, but squeaked out a
one-point victory over Watertown for the league title.
Jen Sweredoski made her second trip to the state track meet, coming back from an
injury she sustained in the 400 hurdles at the state qualifiers her junior season.
