There are five forms of pronouns in English. These are:

3.1 Subject Pronoun


Subject pronouns occur in the subject position of a sentence or after the verb ‘be,’
‘be,’ ‘than’, ‘as’, and ‘that’.

a. Direct object of a verb

i. They called us on the telephone.

b. After preposition

i. The policeman was looking for him.

Exception: If the prepositional word functions as other parts of speech (like adverb or conjunction), this rule
may have an exception.

Example: Samira will make her presentation after he finishes his speech.
Conjunction subject pronoun

c. Objects of two clauses are compared


i. She worries about you more than him.
ii. The office staff helped you more than me.

3.3 Possessive Adjective


Possessive adjectives simply modify the noun, rather replace. Possessive pronouns replace the noun.
Possessive adjectives indicate possession/ownership.

3.4 Possessive Pronouns


Possessive pronouns cannot precede a noun. They are pronouns and thus replace noun. The noun is
understood from the context and is not repeated.

Examples of possessive pronouns:

i. This is my book. This is mine.


ii. Your teacher is the same as his teacher. Yours is the same as his.
iii. Her dress is green and my dress is red. Hers is green and mine is red.
iv. Their coats are too small. Theirs are too small.
v. His grades are better than hers.

3.5 Reflexive Pronouns


These pronouns usually follow the verb and indicate that the subject is both giving and receiving the action.
Examples of possessive pronouns:

ii. He sent the letter to himself. Yourself

iii. She served herself in the cafeteria.

iv. They were talking among themselves.

3.6 Relative Pronouns


The relative pronouns and their uses are listed below:
