What is Flood?

• A flood is an overflow of water that submerges land that is usually dry.

• Flooding may occur as an overflow of water from water bodies, such as a river, lake, or ocean, in which the
water overtops or breaks levees, resulting in some of that water escaping its usual boundaries
• Floods are considered second only to wildfires as the most common natural disaster on Earth.
Areas more prone to flooding in Pakistan:
Benefits of Flood:

• Replenishes ground water.

• Makes soil more fertile by spreading alluvium on active and old flood plains.
• Flood water provides much needed water resources in arid and semi-arid regions where
precipitation is low.
• Flooding can spread nutrients to lakes and rivers, which can lead to increased biomass and improves
fisheries for a few years.
• Bird populations may also profit from the boost in food production caused by flooding.
Disadvantages of Floods:

• Spread of waterborne diseases.

• Loss of lives and livelihoods.
• Loss of vegetation.
• Destroy infrastructures (roads, pipes, parks, schools etc.). • Pollution of drinking water (clean drinking
water becomes scarce). • Waterlogging and salinity increases.
• Fish farms are destroyed.
• Trade and industries are effected in urban areas.
Methods to control floods and the damage caused:
• Control the water level of dams.
• Construction of new dams.
• Build barriers (Levees).
• Alter the river’s channel: Straighten it, widen it or deepen it. • Control land use around
the river.
• Diversion canals.
• Coastal defences.
• Prepare – Food & medicine kits.
• Forecast – Warnings issued.
• Respond – Relief workers and donors.
