Chapter Four: Airbag System

Section One: Operating Precautions

I. Preventive Measures to be Taken in Operation

Improper maintenance will cause the incidental inflation of airbag and serious
consequential accidents, which may lead to trigger failures of airbag when needed. Do
read carefully following instructions before maintenance (including disassembling,
assembling, checking and replacing parts) and operate in accordance with proper
procedures specified in Maintenance Manual.
(1). Sometime the symptoms of SRS (auxiliary protection system) are difficult to
diagnose, therefore fault code is the most important information source of diagnosis.
Always check against fault code first before disconnecting battery when diagnosing
auxiliary protection system.
(2). Always start maintenance after ignition switch is turned to LOCK position and
battery cathode (-) terminal has been disconnected for five minutes, for auxiliary
protection system is equipped with a backup power source.
(3). In case SRS is not activated in slight collision, check steering wheel airbag
assembly and airbag sensor assembly.
(4). Do not use SRS parts from other vehicles. Always use new parts for replacement.
(5). Do not repair steering wheel airbag assembly or airbag sensor assembly for reuse.
(6). Do not shake steering wheel pad nor place a magnet close to the pad. Do not
expose steering wheel pad or airbag sensor assembly in hot air or flame.
(7). If steering wheel pad or airbag sensor assembly falls off, or casing, bracket or
connector has defects like crack and dent, replace them with new parts. Any liquid
such as grease, detergent, engine oil or water spilled on steering wheel pad shall be
wiped off immediately with dry cloth.
- 49 – Chery Automobile Co., Ltd.
Chery A15 Maintenance Manual

(8). Steering wheel pad shall be placed on a stable place with the top surface upward.
Do not place any other objects on the pad.
(9). Always dispose of airbag before abandoning vehicle or steering wheel pad.
(10). The inflating device in steering wheel pad will be hot after airbag is inflated.
Dispose of the device after it cools down.
(11). Circuitry faults shall be diagnosed with a high-impedance (min. 10kΩ/V)
volt-ohmmeter.
(12). Follow the precautions specified on the rating plates of SRS parts.
(13). Check SRS warning light performance after maintenance of auxiliary protection
system.

II. Spiral Cable

Spiral cable (as shown in figure below) serves as circuit connection between vehicle
body and steering wheel. Steering wheel must be installed on steering post properly
with the spiral cable at the middle position; otherwise the spiral cable might come off
or cause other faults. Please refer to this manual for proper installation of steering
wheel.

III. Steering Wheel Pad

- 50 – Chery Automobile Co., Ltd.

Chery A15 Maintenance Manual

1. SRS airbag is fitted in steering wheel. Airbag includes a trigger, an ignitor, a gas
generator, etc. When airbag sensor assembly sends a signal, the trigger will activate
inflation of airbag.
2. Steering wheel pad shall be placed with top surface upward when disassembling or
replacing. Lock the locking bar of dual-lock connector and handle with care to avoid
damaging connector. Do not place a steering wheel pad over another (If the pad is
placed with the metal surface upward, the airbag might be incidentally triggered and
cause serious accidents).

Wrong Correct
3. Do not measure the trigger resistance (to avoid incidental trigger, which is
extremely dangerous).
4. Do not apply grease on steering wheel pad, nor clean it with detergent of any kind.
5. Store steering wheel pad in an ambient temperature lower than 93ºC (200ºF) and
humidity lower than 40%, and keep it away from electric noises.
6. Disconnect airbag connector before any welding operation.
7. Trigger the airbag with a special tool before disposing of the vehicle or the steering
wheel pad.

IV. BCM (Airbag Control Module)

1. BCM (airbag control module, as shown in the figure) is located on the floor under
warm air water tank. BCM consists of airbag sensor, safety sensor, diagnostic circuit,
ignition control, driving circuit, etc. BCM receives signal from airbag sensor and

determines whether to activate SRS.

BCM

2. If the airbag is triggered due to collision, do not reuse airbag computer.

3. Maintenance (including loosening the set bolt of airbag central sensor assembly)
may be started only after ignition switch is turned to LOCK position and battery
cathode terminal has been disconnected for five minutes.

V. Wiring and Connector

SRS wirings are all held in a yellow corrugated tube, and all connectors are
standard-yellow colored. In case wiring comes off or connector is damaged due to
incident, repair or replace as per corresponding instructions.

VI. SRS Connector

All SRS connectors are yellow-colored to be distinguished from other connectors.
SRS connectors with special functions and designs ensure high reliability by using gilt
terminals. A dual-locking pin locks the electronic connector lug mechanism to prevent
terminals from sliding out, as the figure shows.

Section Two: Working Principle of Airbag System

I. Working Principle of SRS

When the vehicle collides with other objects, the collision between vehicle and the
other object is called primary collision, after which vehicle speed will be rapidly
decreased, while the driver and passengers will move forward due to inertia force and
collide with steering wheel, windshield or dashboard and other inside components,
this is called secondary collision. Secondary collision is the major cause of the
driver’s injuries in vehicle accidents. To relieve or avoid driver’s injuries in secondary
collision, some passive protection units such as safety belts and airbag are equipped in
vehicles.
The purpose of airbag design is to quickly form an air cushion between driver and
inside components during the short period of time (50ms) between primary and
secondary collisions, as shown in the figure, to support driver’s head and chest with
an air cushion and absorb the kinetic energy produced by body inertia with damping
action of the airbag, so as to protect driver’s body.

Activated airbag system

Airbag system is a safety unit to be used together with safety belt.

Airbag dose not replace safety belt in its function.
Driver must always wear safety belts with proper tightness.

- 53 – Chery Automobile Co., Ltd.

Chery A15 Maintenance Manual

II. Working Conditions

Airbag system is activated under any one of the following circumstances:
1). When a vehicle running at 25Km/H collides with a still object;
2). When two vehicles running at 25Km/H in opposite direction collides with each
other (airbags activated in both vehicles);
3) When a vehicle running at 50Km/H collides with a still vehicle on the front
(airbags activated in both vehicles);
4). Collision within the range of 30º angle on both sides.

SRS is designed to provide protection for driver against injuries caused by heavy
frontal collision of vehicle. Any external force coming in an angle within 30º from
vehicle centerline shall activate airbag.
Important: Above mentioned vehicle speeds all refer to sensor-monitored speed, not
actual vehicle speed. Sensor-monitored speed is related to actual speed, bumper effect,
frame deformation, etc.

IV. Airbag Component Parts and Working Principles

SRS (airbag system) includes:
Steering wheel airbag subassembly;
Airbag control module;
Steering post hairspring;
Wire harness;
SRS fault warning light.
1. Collision Sensor (inside BCM)
Collision sensor or accelerometer indicates vehicle acceleration or deceleration in
frontal collision with electronic instruments, in which the electronic signals
proportionally reflect vehicle acceleration or deceleration (acceleration of gravity).
Computer decides the collision severity according to the strength of electronic signal.
If electronic signal strength exceeds set value, airbag computer will immediately send
command ignition signal to ignitor to generate air for inflation by heating inflating
agent.
2. Safety Sensor (inside BCM)
Most vehicles have a spider-structured connector between airbag computer and ignitor

to avoid mistrigger of airbag. The safety sensor equipped to Chery A15 is composed
of a dual contactor and a motor switch.
The safety sensor is independent of electronic components when working. Airbag
ignition circuit is in “standby” status under normal running of vehicle and will be
activated when the inflation of airbag is necessary (above 6.4 acceleration of gravity).
3. Hairspring
A spiral wire harness is used to be placed between steering wheel and steering post to
ensure sufficient turning angle and avoid damaging connecting wire harness of airbag
subassembly. First fit the wire harness in helical spring, and then fix the helical spring
in spring housing. This subassembly is called hairspring. Generally horn wire harness
is also fitted in the helical spring.

Note: turning steering wheel for more than 4.5 turns will damage hairspring.
Turing steering wheel:
Turning steering wheel to one side tightens coil.
Turning steering wheel to another side releases coil.
Turning steering wheel for more than 4.5 turns will damage hairspring.
(Total turning range: 9 turns)

Warning: demounting hairspring will cause injury and car damage, therefore never
demount hairspring. If the airbag has been inflated, replace the hairspring. Please
demount airbag subassembly, hairspring and safety memory device before
maintenance of steering system. Before demounting or mounting airbag subassembly,
please disconnect battery cathode and wait for at least 1 minute.
Demounting/Mounting Hairspring
Hairspring is mounted between steering wheel and steering post. When demounting,
pay attention to mounting position and direction to avoid insufficient turning angle of
steering wheel or heavy steering.
It is necessary to check hairspring clearance during steering before demounting or
mounting hairspring.
Warning: to check clearance, carefully turn hairspring until resistance is felt, and then
turn back for about 4 turns and align with clearance mark.

4. Airbag Subassembly
(1) Airbag Subassembly
Airbag subassembly mainly consists of airbag cover, airbag, inflator subassembly.
Airbag is made of nylon fabric with chemical glue applied on inner layer to seal air
inside. Unused airbag is folded like a packed parachute between gas generator and
airbag cover. A tearing line is stamped on airbag cover to help inflated airbag tear
cover and reduce inflating resistance.
Generally the inflation will begin within 10ms after vehicle collision, and the total
inflating time is about 30ms. Airbag will spread along steering post with a sight
deflection toward windshield to prevent collisions of driver’s face with windshield
and the chest with steering wheel.
Vent holes are set on the backside of airbag (opposite to driver). When the diver hits
airbag due to inertia force, the air inside will be vented by the pressure to absorb the
kinetic energy from driver and protect driver’s body against injuries.
Inflator subassembly works to inflate airbag when ignitor is lighted to spread the
airbag. When computer sends command ignition signal, heating cord is switched on
and heated rapidly to ignite ignitor, which immediately will explode to generate heat
to make inflating agent release air to be inflated into airbag.

(2). BCM (Airbag Control Module)

An unrepairable component part which monitors other system component parts and
sends command to activate airbag.
Records any detected fault.
Turns on warning light to remind driver of fault.
Only to be diagnosed against code with diagnoser.
BCM controls the inflation and spread of airbag through following component parts:
. Safety sensor
. Capacitor
. Collision sensor or accelerometer.
(3). Capacitor
The capacitor provides power reserve.
(4). Bulb
Once the working voltage reaches BCM point, the warning light will be turned on, at
this moment we can check the bulb. BCM controls the light to keep on for about 4
seconds and then go out during the bulb check.
Fault Display
BCM records system faults in two modes.

2. Historical fault.
(5). Warning Light
. Warning light will be turned on once a fault is detected.
. And keeps “ON”.
(6). Wire Harness

V. Fault Diagnosis and Maintenance

1. Check with SRS Diagnostic system

When the SRS is powered on, airbag BCM will turn on warning light and start a
self-checking, during which the warning light will flash for 6 seconds with a
frequency of 1Hz. Any fault detected by BCM will activate airbag warning light, and
the fault will be stored to BCM memory. BCM will check SRS fault each time it is
powered on.

A fault will be marked by SDM if it is detected consecutively for five times. A fault
diagnosis testing cycle lasts for 400ms, therefore it takes SDM 2 seconds (400ms X 5
times) to confirm a fault. If a marked fault continues, the warning light will keep on,
this is called a “current fault”. If a marked fault does not appear in the following 25
consecutive testing cycle (400ms X 25 = 10 seconds), it will be unmarked, this is
called a “historical fault”.
2. Diagnose with Diagnoser

Diagnoser reads data in BCM memory for continuous data communication. A

diagnoser is able to read fault code in memory and clear part of stored data after
maintenance, but is unable to clear internal faults such as collision record and
arithmetic data fault.

To properly operate the diagnoser, first turn off ignition switch, and connect diagnoser
with OBDII connector, then turn on ignition switch. Next steps please refer to
instruction manual of diagnoser.
