LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET No. 1

Illustrating Measures of Position
Math 10 - Quarter IV - Week 1

Name of Learner : ___________________________________

Grade Level : ___________________________________
Section : ___________________________________
Date : ___________________________________

I. Introduction

This activity serves as a self-learning guide for the learners. It facilitates

lesson understanding as it specifically aims for students’ mastery of the
concept on measures of position; quartiles deciles and percentiles. The
data set can be divided into 4, 10 and 100 for quartiles, deciles and
percentiles respectively.

II. Learning Competency

At the end of this learning activity, you should be able to illustrate the
following measures of position: quartiles, deciles and percentiles.
(M10SP-lVa-1)

III. Activities

Quartile – The quartiles are the score points which divide a distribution into four equal parts.
Quartile 1 is 25% of the data set or the lower quartile. Quartile 2 is the median
equivalent to 50% or the middle quartile of the distribution in the data set, while
Quartile 3 is 75% of the data set or the upper quartile. Look at the figure below

25% 50% 75%

Q1 Q2 Q3
Decile – The deciles are the nine score points which divide a distribution into ten equal parts,
the illustration below is the division of decile.

D1 D2 D3 D4 D5 D6 D7 D8 D9
Percentile - The percentiles are the ninety-nine score points which divide a distribution into
one hundred equal parts, so that each part represents the data set.

D1 D2 D3 D4 D5 D6 D7 D8 D9

The 1st decile (D1) is the 10th percentile (P10). It means 10% of the data is less
than or equal to the value of P10 or D1, and so on.

1
Find the position of Q1, Q2, Q3 in the given scores of 5 students in
EXAMPLE 1 their Mathematics activity
4 7 14 10 8

Solution:

a: Arrange the data in ascending.

4 7 8 10 14

b: Divide the data into four equal parts

4 7 8 10 14
c: Locate the position of Q1, Q2, and Q3

4 7 8 10 14
Q Q2 Q3

The following are the 10 days net income of canteen in the school,

arranged from lowest to highest income. Locate the position of D3 and D5.

484 502 542 578 657 608 623 679 682 715
Solution:

a: Since the data is already arranged in ascending order, we divide the data into ten
equal parts

484 502 542 578 657 608 623 679 682 715

b: Locate the position of D3 and D5

484 502 542 578 657 608 623 679 682 715

D3 D5

Find the 30th percentile or P30 of the following test scores of a random
EXAMPLE 3 sample of ten students:

35 42 40 28 15 23 33 20 18 28.

Solution:

a: Arrange the data in ascending order.

15 18 20 23 28 28 33 35 40 42

b: Divide the data into one hundred equal parts. We use interval of ten.

15 18 20 23 28 28 33 35 40 42

c: Locate the position of P30

15 18 20 23 28 28 33 35 40 42

P30
WHERE IS MY POSITION?
What is the equivalent of the following position

1. D5 in quartile?
2. P50 in quartile?
3. P50 in decile?
Activity 2 LOCATE MY POSITION!
1. Locate the position of Q1, Q2, Q3 in the scores of 1 to 10 quiz of group 1 mathematics
students given below;
8 10 4 5 7

2
2. Locate the position of D1 and D8 of the following test scores of a random sample ten
students.
25, 35, 23, 45, 28, 24, 30, 32, 50, 48

3. What is P20, and P90 in the test scores of ten students?

25, 35, 23, 45, 28, 24, 30, 32, 50, 48

Activity 3 WRITING YOUR JOURNAL

Make your own journal writing about what you have learned in measures of positions
quartiles, deciles and percentiles of the data set. Use the following questions to guide you in
writing the journal.

Guide Questions in Writing Journal

1. What do you mean by quartiles? Tell the relationship of lower quartiles, middle quartile,
and upper quartile.
2. What is Deciles? Compare the measure of position of decile to quartile
3. What is Percentiles? How do you describe percentile compare to decile?
4. Before locating the position of quartile, decile and percentile what should be first to
consider in the given data set?
