● The ancient greeks thought that competition fosters excellence
● The first 13 games featured only one event (100 yard dash)
● Overtime new events like boxing, horse racing, foot race
● In 391 AD, the Roman Christians stopped the games
● After 1500 years, in 1894, Pierre De Coubertin launched plan for new Olympic Games
● 1896: first Games of modern era held in Athens
● The games bring international world class athletes together
What are the Olympics?
● Athletes around the world get together to compete
● The world comes together on common grounds in peace and
unity
● The first modern Olympic Games brought together 14 nations
and 241 athletes who competed in 43 different events.
● Summer Olympics & Winter Olympics
Why are the Olympics held every 4 years?

● The Ancient Olympics were held every four years during a


religious festival to honor the Greek God, Zeus.
● The Ancient Olympics was a way to salute their Gods.
● Time would be marked in 4 years called olympiads
● To respect the ancient origins, Pierre de Coubertin,
wanted to keep that tradition.
Summer Olympics
● The Summer Olympic Games also known as the Games of
the Olympiad
● The Games were first held in 1896 in Athens, Greece.
● Sports included: archery, canoeing, gymnastics, rowing,
track and field, etc.
Winter Olympics
● Major international multi-sport event for sports practiced on snow and ice.

● The first Winter Olympics took place on January 25, 1924 in Chamonix,

France.

● The original five Winter Olympic sports were bobsleigh, curling, ice hockey,

nordic skiing, and skating.

● 16 countries gathered to compete in sports.


What do the Rings symbolize?
● The 5 rings were created in 1912 by Pierre de Coubertin
(only approved in 1914)
● They were first displayed at the 1920 Olympic Games in
Belgium .
● Each ring represents the five continents Africa, Asia,
America, Europe, and Oceania.
● The colours of the rings represents the colors of every
nation’s flag.
● Also stands that anyone from any country can participate
in the Olympics.
● Symbol of peace throughout the world as they all
interlock.
Women at the Olympics
● 1900: Women compete for the first time (Paris)
○ Only 22 women out of 100 athletes
○ In 2 events (tennis and golf)
● 1912: swimming were introduced but they wanted women to wear long skirts
● 1928: track was introduced
● 1938-1960: women weren't allowed to compete in races longer than 800 meters
(restricted to only 4 events)
● 1991: any new sport starting at the Olympics must have women’s competition
● 2012: first games in which women competed in all the sports
● Only 2 sports that are designed for women (synchronised swimming and rhythm
gymnastics)
● 2016 in the Rio Olympics 45% of athletes were women

Olympic Flame and Torch

● Months before: Flame is lit at Olympia, Greece


● The flame is carried for many weeks to reach the host city
● Torch Relay:
○ Flame announces the beginning of the Games
○ Relay spreads a message of peace and friendship
○ Final runner(s) light the cauldron with the Olympic
flame inside the stadium
The Opening and Closing Ceremonies
● Invite people to discover the cultures of the host country
● Use of artistic displays (music, song, dance, theater, and
fireworks)
● At the opening ceremony:
○ Raise the host country’s flag and sing national anthem
○ Parade by participants
○ Symbolic release of doves
○ Play Olympic anthem and raise Olympic flag
○ Torch relay and lighting of the cauldron
Where are the next Olympic Games going to be held?

Summer Olympics:
July 23, 2021 - August 8, 2021 (depends Covid) in Tokyo
- If not Paris for the 2024 Summer Olympics

Winter Olympics:
February 4, 2022 in Beijing

● Comes from Quebec.
● Made her debut at 16 years old at FIE world championships in 2011.
Oliver Bone
Sailing

● First competed in Beijing in 2008.


● From Montreal.
● Retired but came back for the Tokyo 2020
Olympic Games.
Hugo Houle
Cycling - Road

● Started doing triathlons at the age of 9.


● Focused on cycling at age 14.
● Competed at Rio Games in 2016.
Ariane Bonhomme
Cycling - Track

● First Olympic Gmes in Tokyo 2020.


● Started road cycling at age 12.
● Had outstanding performance at the 2018
Canadian Track Cycling Championship.
Danielle Lappage
Wrestling

● Olympic debut at Rio Games in 2016.


● Got injured and couldn't compete.
● Thought she wouldn’t be able to wrestle again.

- Make sure to use complete sentences, capitalization, and punctuation!
● Organized writing with ideas that flow nicely
