1. In 2 sentences, define briefly Mythology and Folklore.

Mythology is a story about gods, goddesses and their progeny


explaining natural events, life and death, and how something came to
be. While Folklores are local stories mostly involving local characters
that convey moral values and philosophy.

2. Discuss your insights of this line in 2-3 sentences only; Myth and
Legends of a society are considered the cornerstone on which its
culture is built."

The line presents a truthful representation. Myths and Legends are


truly a society's warp to form the cultures present in the community.
Through stories, people are able to gather and create practices that are
used to represent and respect stories of the past.

3. Cite the elements of Myth and Folklore.

Elements of a Myth

1. A story of unknown authorship told “long ago.”

2. It has a narrator who tells the story

3. Myths are early man's desire to explain the universe. The attempt to
answer serious questions about the world around the people of that
culture, dealing with nature, science, and human behavior…

To explain natural phenomena or an occurrence.


To explain the creation of the world.
To teach people moral lessons.
To explain some historical event.
To explain some ancient religious practices.
To reveal the common hopes and fears of mankind

4. Includes supernatural beings. The gods, goddesses, and heroes are


super human in nature.

5. Human emotions are experienced by the gods.

6. Gods sometimes appear in disguised form.

7. Follows regular storyline (plot) with a conflict that comes to an


interesting resolution

8. Often contains a metamorphosis.


9. Magic is often present in myths.

4. Discuss briefly (2-3 sentences only) the various Types of Myths.

Types of Myths

1. Aetiological Myths - The word aetiological is from the Greek


word "aetion" meaning “reason” or “explanation”. It explains the
reason why something is the way it is today. 

-Subtypes-
a. Natural aetiological myth explains an aspect of nature.

b. Etymological aetiological myth explains the origin of a word.

c. Religious aetiological myth explains the origin of a religious ritual.

2. Historical Myths - Historical myths are told about a historical event,


and they help keep the memory of that event alive. Ironically, in
historical myths, the accuracy is lost but meaning is gained.

3. Psychological Myths - This tries to explain why we feel and act the
way we do. In a psychological myth, the emotion itself is seen as a
divine force, coming from the outside, that can directly influence a
person’s emotions.
