Instruction: Answer the following questions. Write your answer on the space
below each question.
1. Explain How does CAD/CAM/CAE software affect the work done by engineers,
especially in the field of mechanical engineering?
Production has become more complex and engineers are always asked by
people to leave specialized roles and to take on a wide variety of tasks that are
beyond their traditional responsibilities. With the use of CAD, CAM, and CAE,
mechanical engineers are tasked and centered their skills in broader concerns
such as cost, procurement, sustainability, manufacturability, and serviceability.
Mechanical engineers usually are the ones that are tasked with design
innovation such as designing and developing products.
With the help of this software, it increases productivity and improves the
quality and design of the products. Also, it helps in the manufacturing and
simulation of various models. Mechanical engineers used these throughout the
whole engineering process from conceptualizing, strength analysis, simulation
to the manufacturing of components.
2. In your own words, explain the functions of various software listed in this
module on the industry.
a. AutoCAD,
b. Fusion 360,
c. Catia,
d. AutoPipe,
AutoPIPE is used for integrated piping analysis and design
solutions. It is used for creating, modifying, and reviewing piping and
structural models. It helps reduce the cost and time to produce various
compliant piping and vessel designs for any plant environment, even
nuclear. It is time-friendly and it reduces errors by bringing piping
models from plant design applications to perform advanced analysis of
pipe stress. This software also helps professionals to deliver faster, safer,
and more cost-effective vessel designs with automatic workflows that
include complete global codes and applied loadings.
e. MSC Nastran,
MSC Nastran is used when it comes to simulating stress,
dynamics, or vibration of real-world and complex systems. It is used by
engineers and analysts who are tasked with virtual prototyping to
produce fast results with accurate and good impact design decisions
enough to give their companies and management the confidence to
replace physical prototypes. MSC Nastran may also be used to remedy
structural issues product’s service to reduce downtime and costs. It can
also be used to develop the performance of the existing designs or make
unique product differentiators in industries.
f. CFD software
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Software is used to simulate
fluid motion and heat transfer using numerical approaches and acts as a
virtual fluid dynamics simulator. It analyzes various problems such as
laminar and turbulent flows, incompressible and compressible fluids,
multiphase flows, and the like. CFD software simulations help industries
for a greater understanding of how fluids will react under certain
circumstances. It can also be used in thermal performance, static
structural performance, fluid flow, and dynamic structural performance.
g. MatLab
MATLAB stands for Matrix Laboratory which is used to integrate
different computation, visualization, and programming which are
expressed in various mathematical notations. It is also used for the
development of various algorithms, designing models, simulations, and
making prototypes. Also, in data analysis, exploration, and
visualization. It is a high-performance language for machine learning,
control systems, test and measurements, and other computational
problems. MATLAB provides functions for the integration of algorithms
with external languages such as C, C++, and Java.
