Internship Sumassion #1
For my first internship I had the opportunity to intern at High Bridge elementary school
teaching Mrs. Sandorff’s second grade class. There were about 25 students in her class and most
of them were participating virtually while only a few were in person. I was there October 30th,
November 13th, December 4th, December 11th, and December 18th. Which made for a total of
The classroom I was in was on the smaller side, the desks and chairs were also little
because the children were only in second grade. The kids that were in person were a lot more
hyper than the other group they switched with which made things difficult at times but posed an
interesting challenge. The school is fairly small there are not a lot of kids, it is only two floors
and a couple staircases. They did have a very nice faculty room that I spent a lot of time in
making copies. My internship teacher had set up her classroom so all desks were facing the front
and her desk was set up facing the class. Then she had two computers set up- one where the kids
could see her face and the other that was pinned onto the screen that had an attached webcam
pointing down to her papers and that way the kids could follow along and see what she was
doing on the her desk (filling out english notes, completing math problems, reading books, etc.).
I found myself in a unique situation my first day because my teacher was all virtual so I
just had the sub; but it gave me the opportunity to walk around and help the kids in class do their
work and stay online and on task so they did not interrupt her in the middle of her virtual lesson.
My second day was a lot better. She was there and set aside some time to talk to me and discuss
everything and what was expected of me for my class and what I could do for her in her class. I
ended up tearing out a page in my packet that had all the tasks we could do to help them in the
classroom. Since I gave her that list on my third day she gave me a list of things to get done and I
honestly had so much fun now that I had things to complete and do. I felt like a teacher and it
was really cool. That day consisted of grading spelling and reading tests, doing guided reading
with individual students, and making copies. All of that helped me get to know the students
better and learn more about their learning styles, which eventually helped me while planning my
lesson.
I had mentioned the lesson plan to my teacher on my third day and we exchanged emails
to talk about it over the weekend. I told her that I am really flexible on what she would like me to
teach and I could do as much work outside of school as needed. She was very prompt and sent
me a math topic and asked me to watch a video with the kids, plan the lesson, and play a game.
This was challenging for me because I haven't taught or planned a core subject lesson before so I
wanted it to be perfect. But a perfect lesson isn't realistic in the teaching world- something
unexpected is always bound to happen especially in a class of younger children. I looked over
some pages in the workbook and reviewed the game the whole night before and thought to
myself “this is going to be easy I got this!” well, I got there and it wasn't anything like I
expected. It was actually really difficult to teach the problems, even though they were easy to
understand and complete for myself I had to learn that it was new information to the kids and
they wouldn't have been able to pick it up like I can. I started to get really nervous when they
didn't pick it up right away, my teacher was very reassuring and jumped in to help if I was a little
bit stuck. Once I got the hang of it i felt more confident and the students started to pick up the
material- overall it was a great challenge and definitely improved my thought process when it
comes to teaching.
Overall my experience was incredible, I learned so much that i wouldbt have been able to
learn with just sitting in a class taking notes. I was really grateful that she put me in charge of
things like guided reading and even let me lead the guided notes after a story one day. As the
internship went on she recognised my strengths and helped me become a better teacher. Working
with the children was really interesting and now I know for a fact that the relationships you have
with your students are so important. I was able to use what they were interested in outside of
school to keep them engaged and help them retain all of the information being taught. I am so
excited for my next internship and ready to try something new again!
