Chapter: Chapter 2: The Role of Human Resources

Lesson: LESSON 2: Skills Needed for HRM

Evaluation:

1. What are your perceptions of what an HR manager does on a day-to-

day basis? Research this job title and describe your findings. Is this
the type of job you expected?

Human resource management requires a lot of skills such as organizing,

communicating, multitasking, computer and technology skills and etc. What they manage are
humans and speaking of humans it encompasses wide field to study. A human resource
manager should know basic psychology --- communicating with other people, saying good
news and bad news. When recruiting, a human resource manager should know how human
behavior works. Aside from basic psychology they also need to know basic sociology skills
like interacting with the people (workers), managing group conflicts and etc. Even laws a
human resource manager should also be equip with --- laws on compensation, basic rights of
workers and etc. Imagine, human resource manager requires a passionate spirit and driven
heart to do this job.
Human resources managers plan, coordinate, and direct the administrative functions of
an organization. Human resources managers are employed in nearly every industry. They
work in offices, and most work full time during regular business hours. Some travel to attend
professional meetings or to recruit employees.
Before, the way I understand the role of human resource manager was focusing only on
human behavior in an industry --- managing and delegating tasks, staffing and recruiting and
etc. However, as I am in the midst of reading different materials I found out that human
resource management is beyond on human relations alone what they do is an extra ordinary
task for they require multitasking and this job demand different skills like they should know the
ethics, laws, working environment and etc.
Also, I thought that human resource management is an omniscient job but I was wrong
because human resource manager is just one of the many staff of an organization. As I
further read in the web I discovered that in an organization there are various human resource
staff. Some examples are:
 Human resources manager
 Human resources generalist
 Human resources director
 Human resources assistant

 Human resources recruiter

 Compensation manager

Therefore, I can say that a human resource management is comprise of different roles
and responsibilities
A job may be defined as a "collection or aggregation of tasks, duties and responsibilities
which as a whole, is regarded as a regular assignment to individual employees." In other
words, total work is divided and grouped into packages; we call it a job. Each job has a
definite title based upon standardized trade specifications within a job. A position is a
"collection of tasks and responsibilities regularly assigned to one person"; while a job is a
"group of positions, which involve essentially the same duties, responsibilities, skill and
knowledge." A position consists of a particular set of duties assigned to an individual (Zaidi
and Lall, 2012).
How to Become a Human Resources Manager?
Candidates typically need a combination of education and several years of related work
experience to become a human resources manager. Although positions typically require a
bachelor’s degree, some require a master’s degree.
Human resources managers plan, coordinate, and direct the administrative functions of
an organization. They oversee the recruiting, interviewing, and hiring of new staff; consult with
top executives on strategic planning; and serve as a link between an organization’s
management and its employees.
Duties Human resources managers typically do the following:
 Plan and coordinate an organization’s workforce to best use employees’ talents
 Link an organization’s management with its employees
 Plan and oversee employee benefit programs
 Serve as a consultant to advise other managers on human resources issues, such as
equal employment opportunity and sexual harassment
 Coordinate and supervise the work of specialists and support staff
 Oversee an organization’s recruitment, interview, selection, and hiring processes
 Handle staffing issues, such as mediating disputes and directing disciplinary procedures
 Organizations want to attract, motivate, and keep qualified employees and match them to
jobs for which they are well-suited.

Human resources managers accomplish this aim by directing the administrative

functions of human resources departments.
Their work involves overseeing employee relations, securing regulatory compliance,
and administering employee-related services such as payroll, training, and benefits. They
supervise the department’s specialists and support staff and make sure that tasks are
completed accurately and on time.
Human resources managers also consult with top executives regarding strategic
planning and talent management. They identify ways to maximize the value of the
organization’s employees and ensure that they are used efficiently. For example, they might
assess worker productivity and recommend changes to help the organization meet budgetary
goals.
Some human resources managers oversee all aspects of an organization’s human

resources department, including the compensation and benefits program and the training and
development program. In many larger organizations, these programs are directed by
specialized managers, such as compensation and benefits managers and training and
development managers.
As a social studies student I am train to be a civic competent person, embracing the
theories of social sciences and putting it into application is quite a challenge same as a
human resource manager. As I notice, most of the task of a human resource manager touch
our field of expertise. Most of the required skills of HRM are the same skills that I as social
studies should be equip with once I graduate. The career path of a social studies student is
not only limited to being a teacher because we can be a politician, social worker, social media
analysts, might proceed to law and even a human resource manager. As I take this course I
discover my potential, skills and capabilities not just only in the field of teaching but with other
specialization as well.
But as I introspect and analyze my course, being a teacher in the 21st century requires
a deeper level of understanding regarding this job. Given a chance to be a 21st century
teacher our students needs a 21st century ambiance and setting in the classroom. We are not
just a transmitter of knowledge we also manage the behavior of the students. Conflicts among
students are unavoidable, giving good and bad news are part of the teaching and learning
process, we need computer and communication skills in our everyday teaching. We manage
students of more than 100 students in a public school. Then, once we are promoted (from
Teacher 1 to head teacher ) our field of management widen also, we manage the teachers
also. If given the opportunity to be a principal I will manage the students, teachers and other
stakeholders. See, a teacher embrace some of the roles of a human resource manager. And
this is the type of job I am expecting.
