ABSTRACT
This study aimed to find out the Acceptability of Lemon Grass and
Oregano as Flies Control. Specifically, this study aimed to find out the following:
(a.) The lemon grass and oregano is acceptable for flies control, (b.) The people
accepts the lemon grass and oregano as flies control, (c.) The lemon grass and
oregano is acceptable in terms of appearance, aroma, cost, and effectiveness.
This study utilized Experimental Research Design. The data on the
acceptability of lemon grass and oregano as flies control were taken from the
survey-questionnaire conducted personally by the researchers. Statistical tools
used were rating scale, frequency, and percentage.
The respondents were thirty (30) and they easily respond and answered to
the survey-questionnaire after they used the mixed lemon grass and oregano for
flies control.
Since the result of the study found out that using mixed lemon grass and
oregano to spray to the flies are very effective to control the flies. Therefore, the
lemon grass and oregano are acceptable as flies control.

Introduction of the Study
Conceptual Framework
Acceptability Indicators:
Appearance
Effectiveness
Aroma Lemon Grass and Oregano
Cost
Figure 1 showed the independent variables that include the acceptability indicators
which consist of appearance, effectiveness, aroma and cost and the dependent variable
which includes lemon grass and oregano.
Definition of Terms:
For better understanding, the researchers define the following terms:
Acceptability – capable or worthy of being accepted (Merriam-Webster Dictionary
2020). In this study, it refers on how lemon grass and oregano will be acceptable
for flies control.
Appearance – the way that someone or something looks (Merriam-Webster
Dictionary 2020). In this study, it refers to the looks of lemon grass and oregano.
Aroma – a distinctive, pervasive, and usually pleasant or savoury smell (Merriam-
Webster Dictionary 2020). In this study, it refers to the smell of the mixed lemon
grass and oregano.
4
Research Hypothesis:
1. The lemon grass and oregano are not acceptable for flies control.
2. The lemon grass and oregano are not acceptable in terms of appearance, aroma,
cost, and effectiveness.
Chapter II
Review of Related Literature
Oregano is an herb composed of the fresh or dried leaves of the oregano plant.
The plant has tiny leaves that lend a pungent aroma and strong flavor to a variety of
savory foods. When in bloom, the plant sports pink or purple flowers, which are also
edible. As an herb, it is gluten-free and suitable for vegan and paleo diets. Common
oregano is botanically known as Origanum vulgare, Greek for "joy of the mountains." It
can be found growing wild on mountainsides of Greece and other Mediterranean
countries where it is a herb of choice (Filippone, 2019).
The leaves of the oregano plant are very small and a dark green color. It is a
perennial in many zones and the stems can become woody over the years. Common
oregano like you often find in the grocery store is also called 'Greek' oregano (Origanum
vulgare hirtum, formerly known as Oregano heracleoticum). Oregano is an aggressive
plant that likes to spread and a bush of oregano can grow quite large if you allow it. The
stems can also grow up to 2 feet high and will often lay down on the ground, particularly
when the plant is young or in the shade. Oregano is a satisfying herb for any gardener. It
is easy to grow and care for, as long as it does not remain wet for too long. Oregano
grows very well in partial sun, making it a good choice for an indoor garden as well
(Jeanroy, 2018).
Oregano is a medicinal herb known for its antioxidant and anti-microbial, anti-
parasitic properties. It is used for the treatment of indigestion problems, muscle pain,
insect bites, and menstruation symptoms, bacterial and fungal infections. Dried leaves of
oregano are commonly used for the therapeutic purposes it contains iron, vitamins,
calcium, magnesium, copper, niacin and thiamine (Eupena, 2014).
Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) is a shrub-like herb with a distinct lemon
aroma and flavor. It is native to the tropical regions of Asia and the Indian subcontinent.
It's also relatively easy to grow in a home herb garden and is a nice plant for containers.
Dried or fresh lemongrass is commonly used to make herbal teas and other drinks.
When cooking with lemongrass, you can use fresh, dried, or powdered leaves. It is
popular in many Asian cuisines and adds an intriguing flavor to soups and stews. This
herb has a pungent lemony, herbaceous, and sweetly floral flavor that works well with
both sweet and savory foods and beverages. Some people say that its aroma is
6
reminiscent of citronella. This is no coincidence because the two plants are closely
related (Goodwin, 2019).
Lemon grass oil is the volatile oil obtained from the leaves and aerial parts of
Cymbopogon citrates and Cymbopogon flexuosus. It is indigenous to India and
cultivated in India, China, Myanmar, East and West Africa, Guatemala, South America,
Java, Madagascar, and many other countries. Both species are tufted perennial grass
that grows well in sunny warm, humid conditions, such as the tropics. They need at least
2500–3000 mm annual rainfall. A daytime temperature of 25–30 ° C is considered
optimum for maximum oil production with no extremely low night temperatures
(Bhattacharya, 2016).
Lemon grass is a perennial herb widely used in Asian cuisine. In the Philippines,
lemon grass is called “tanglad” commonly used to savour Filipino delicacies. In a studies
“Evaluation of Herbal Essential Oil against Mosquitoes” by the Department of Plant
Production and Faculty of Agricultural Technology in Bangkok, Thailand affirmed that
lemon grass indeed contains organic repellents against mosquitos (Agron, 2012).
Lemongrass oil is also known as citronella plants. The common belief is that
lemongrass oil can help get rid of mosquitoes and flies through its smell alone.
Lemongrass oil is an effective as natural repellent. Creating a concoction of lemongrass
oil and other natural oils can prove to be more powerful against mosquitoes and flies
(Gunder, 2018).
The Diptera, commonly called true flies or two-winged flies, are a group of
familiar insects that includes mosquitos, black flies, midges, fruit flies, and house flies.
The diptera are among the most diverse insect orders, with approximately 150,000
described species. These insects are diverse not only in species richness but also in
their structural variety, ecological habits, and economic importance (Keiper, 2009).
Several families of Diptera (Fly) are of major economic importance and involved
in the transmission of more disease pathogens to humans and other animals than any
other group of arthropods. Biting flies cause annoyance that impacts tourism, recreation,
land development, and industrial and agricultural production, whereas their effects on
livestock can cause reduced milk, egg, and meat production (Merritt, 2009).
The order Diptera includes all true flies. These insects are distinctive because
their hind wings are reduced to small, club-shaped structures called halteres - only the
membranous front wings serve as aerodynamic surfaces. The halteres vibrate during
flight and work much like a gyroscope to help the insect maintain balance. All Dipteran
7
larvae are legless. They live in aquatic (fresh water), semi-aquatic, or moist terrestrial
environments. They are commonly found in the soil, in plant or animal tissues, and in
carrion or dung -- almost always where there is little danger of desiccation. Some
species are herbivores, but most feed on dead organic matter or parasitize other
animals, especially vertebrates, molluscs, and other arthropods. In the more primitive
families (suborder Nematocera), fly larvae have well-developed head capsules with
mandibulate mouthparts. These structures are reduced or absent in the more advanced
suborders (Brachycera and Cyclorrhapha) where the larvae, known as maggots, have
worm-like bodies and only a pair of mouth hooks for feeding (Meyer, 2016).

Research Methodology
Research Design
This study employed the research design which was the experimental research
design. This research aimed to study about the acceptability of lemon grass and
oregano for flies control.
oregano leaves. Then after that, they mixed the boiled lemon grass and extracted
oregano leaves and put it in the spray bottle.
The researchers’ strategies in conducting their study entitled, “Acceptability of
Lemon Grass and Oregano for Flies Control” were; first the researchers approached the
barangay captains in every barangay who were involved in this study and asked their
permission to conduct their research study. The respondents were the vendors and
households in Mambusao, Capiz. After the authorized persons signed the letter of
permission, the researchers personally distributed the questionnaire for the target
respondents.
Data Analysis
In analysing the data, the researchers used the tables to represent the data
collected in a structured format within a database. The researchers also used statistical
tool such as frequency counts, percentage and rating scale to analyse the data.
Frequency Count – this is the most straight forward approach to working with
quantitative data. Items are classified according to a particular scheme and an
arithmetical count is made of the number of items (or tokens) within the texts
which belong to each classification (or type) in the scheme.
Percentage – is a number or ratio expressed as a fraction of 100. It is often
denoted using the percentage sign (%) or abbreviation “pct”.
Rating Scale – is a set of categories designed to elicit information about a
quantitative or a qualitative attributes. In the social sciences particularly in
psychology, common examples are the liker response scale and 1-10 rating
scale in which a person selects the number which is considered to reflect the
perceived quality of a product.
