PRESENT CONTINUOUS
The present continuous describes an action that is taking place at this moment (while speaking
or in general in the present moment) or that is about to occur. Its equivalent in Spanish is "the
present formed by being + the main verb in gerund or the future tense in case of referring to
something that is about to occur"

The present continuous is formed with the present tense of the verb be and the main verb with
the suffix -ing.

EXAMPLES:

o Harry is eating.
o We are rehearsing a new play in the drama club.
o The plane is landing soon.

1. Affirmative Sentences : Subject + auxiliary verb (to be) + verb + ing.

EXAMPLES:
 I’m talking.
 He’s eating.
 They’re learning

2. Negative Sentences: Subject + auxiliary verb (to be) + negative auxiliary (not) + verb +
ing

EXAMPLES:

 I’m not talking.

 He’s not [He isn’t] eating.

3. Interrogative Sentences: Auxiliary verb (to be) + subject + verb + ing?

EXAMPLES:
 Are you talking?
 Is he eating?
 Are they learning?

 ¿ When is it used?

The present continuous is used to talk about something that is happening at the
moment we speak
Ejemplos:

 I’m studying now.

 He’s eating at the moment.
 Is it raining?
We also use it to talk about something that is happening now but not necessarily when
we speak. In this case, time expressions such as "currently", "lately" or "these days"
are used.
EXAMPLES
 They’re learning English.
 She’s currently looking for a job.
 Are you working much lately?

We use the present continuous to talk about something that is already decided to be done in
the near future. Its use indicates that it is quite certain that the planned will happen.

EXAMPLES

 I’m going to the party tonight.

 He’s not [He isn’t] coming to class tomorrow.
 Are you working next week?
