SECTION A : ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS

Q1. Figure Q1 shows part of the floor plan of a reinforced concrete office building.
During construction, slabs and beams are cast together. The overall thickness
of the slab is 150 mm and the dimension of the beams is given in the figure.
The finishes, ceiling and services form a permanent action of 1.5 kN/m2. The
characteristic variable action is 3.0 kN/m2. The construction materials consist
of grade C30 concrete and grade 500 for the main reinforcement and links.

Determine the following:

(a) Nominal cover for the beam B/1-3a.

(3 marks)

(b) Design the longitudinal reinforcement required by beam B/1-3a. Beam

A-B/2 and beam B/1-3 also carry 3 m height of brickwall with weight
of 2.6 kN/m2.
(20 marks)

(c) Design the vertical shear reinforcement for the whole span of beam
B/1-3 only.
(10 marks)

(c) Check the deflection of beam B/1-3 only.

(5 marks)

(d) Sketch the detailing of beam B/1-3a in the longitudinal and cross
section.
(2 marks)

Use the following design data:

Size of main reinforcement = 25 mm

Size of compression reinforcement = 16 mm
Size of shear reinforcement = 8 mm
1 hour fire resistance
Exposure class XC3
Design life 50 years

Q2. Figure Q2 shows the layout plan of beams and slabs for the first floor of a
reinforced concrete building. The concrete for the slabs and beams are poured
together and the overall thickness of slab is 150 mm. The floor is to be
designed to carry a variable action of 3 kN/m2, plus floor finishes and ceiling
loads of 1.0 kN/m2. The characteristic strength for concrete and steel
reinforcement are 25 N/mm2 and 500N/mm2, respectively. The nominal cover
is 25 mm.

Using the design data provided,

a) Calculate the design action acting on the slab and sketch the bending
moment diagrams in the Y-Y and Z-Z directions. Show all the
important values.
( 8 marks )

b) Design all the flexural reinforcement required to resist the Y–Y

moment and check for shear, deflection and cracking. Assume bar size
of 10 mm
( 17 marks )

c) Show/sketch the reinforcement details in all slabs in plan view .

SECTION B : ANSWER ONE (1) QUESTION ONLY

Q3. The cross section of a 7 m simply supported beam is shown in Figure Q3. The
beam carries uniformly distributed permanent action (excluding self-weight)
of 30 kN/m and variable action 10 kN/m throughout the span. In addition,
there is a concentrated permanent action = 50 kN and variable action = 30 kN
at mid-span. During construction, due to some unforeseen obstruction, the
overall depth of the beam, h has to be reduced by 75 mm. As the engineer in
charge of the project, determine whether the reduction of h by 75 is acceptable
or not? If it is not acceptable, please give some additional corrective measures
that need to be done so that the project can continue with the h reduce by 75
mm. Use nominal cover = 30 mm and fck = 30 N/mm2

Q4. (a) Discuss and explain the advantages and disadvantages of prestressed
concrete compared to reinforced concrete. Focus your discussion on;
- Manufacture
- Flexure strength
- Deflection
- Forms of construction that favours prestressed concrete the
most.
(5 marks)

(b) The cross section of a prestressed concrete beam shown in Figure Q4 is

pre-tensioned using 4 nos. of tendon. The beam is simply supported
over a span of 15 m and carries a service action (excluding the beam
self weight) of 15 kN/m. Each tendon is initially stressed up to 400 kN
with an eccentricity as shown in the figure. The prestress force losses
10% and 18% of this value at transfer and service, respectively. The
characteristics strength of concrete at service and transfer is 50 and 36
N/mm2, respectively. Draw the stress distribution during transfer and
service by noting the important values. Then, check whether these
stresses are within the allowable values in EN 1992-1-1: 2004.
(15 marks)

(c ) Using the appropriate equations, check the suitability of the selected

section in Figure 4.
