COURSE CODE : SAB 3353 / SAM 3313 / SAA 3243
PROGRAMME : SAW
DURATION : 3 HOURS
INSTRUCTION TO CANDIDATES:
1. ANSWERS ALL QUESTIONS IN SECTION A AND ONLY ONE (1)
QUESTION IN SECTION B.
2. ALL SOLUTIONS MUST BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH EN 1992-1-1:

Students caught copying/cheating during the examination will be liable for
disciplinary actions and the faculty may recommend the student to be expelled from
the study.
Q1. Figure Q1 shows part of the floor plan of a reinforced concrete office building.
During construction, slabs and beams are cast together. The overall thickness
of the slab is 150 mm and the dimension of the beams is given in the figure.
The finishes, ceiling and services form a permanent action of 1.5 kN/m2. The
characteristic variable action is 3.0 kN/m2. The construction materials consist
of grade C30 concrete and grade 500 for the main reinforcement and links.
(c) Design the vertical shear reinforcement for the whole span of beam
B/1-3 only.
(10 marks)
(d) Sketch the detailing of beam B/1-3a in the longitudinal and cross
section.
(2 marks)

Q2. Figure Q2 shows the layout plan of beams and slabs for the first floor of a
reinforced concrete building. The concrete for the slabs and beams are poured
together and the overall thickness of slab is 150 mm. The floor is to be
designed to carry a variable action of 3 kN/m2, plus floor finishes and ceiling
loads of 1.0 kN/m2. The characteristic strength for concrete and steel
reinforcement are 25 N/mm2 and 500N/mm2, respectively. The nominal cover
is 25 mm.
a) Calculate the design action acting on the slab and sketch the bending
moment diagrams in the Y-Y and Z-Z directions. Show all the
important values.
( 8 marks )
FIGURE Q2
Q3. The cross section of a 7 m simply supported beam is shown in Figure Q3. The
beam carries uniformly distributed permanent action (excluding self-weight)
of 30 kN/m and variable action 10 kN/m throughout the span. In addition,
there is a concentrated permanent action = 50 kN and variable action = 30 kN
at mid-span. During construction, due to some unforeseen obstruction, the
overall depth of the beam, h has to be reduced by 75 mm. As the engineer in
charge of the project, determine whether the reduction of h by 75 is acceptable
or not? If it is not acceptable, please give some additional corrective measures
that need to be done so that the project can continue with the h reduce by 75
mm. Use nominal cover = 30 mm and fck = 30 N/mm2

Q4. (a) Discuss and explain the advantages and disadvantages of prestressed
concrete compared to reinforced concrete. Focus your discussion on;
- Manufacture
- Flexure strength
- Deflection
- Forms of construction that favours prestressed concrete the
most.
