1. What type of shallow foundation is common Hawassa City and why? ( use sketch)
2. Discuss the steps for the selection of the type of deep foundation? What of foundation is
recommended in the sea?
3. A square footing as shown in the Figure 1 is to carry the loading indicated. The water
table will be temporarily lowered during construction. The average SPT of sand value is
25 as measured in the field. moist =17 kN/m3 and ’=12 kN/m3. Determine the size of
the square footing to ensure that the settlement does not exceed 25mm.

4. A concrete foundation (unit weight=24 kN/m3) supporting a machine 4m x 3 m in plan
and is subjected to a sinusoidal vibrating force (vertical) having an amplitude of 10 kN
(not frequency dependent). The operating frequency 2000 cpm. The weight of the
machine and foundation is 600 kN. The soil properties are unit eight = 19 kN/m3, shear
modulus =40,000 kPa, and Poisson ratio =0.35. Determine
a. The resonant frequency of the foundation, and
b. The amplitude of vertical vibration at operating frequency.

Mx=300 kN.m and My=200 kN.m as shown in Figure 2. The piles will be embedded in
the soil layer as shown below. Use (C-30 and S-300). It has been decided to use driven
pile , αCS-7 method
