    DIRECTIONS: Develop a staffing plan based on this situation:

    You are a nurse manager working for a secondary hospital. You are participating in fiscal
    planning and you need to determine the number of nurses for the next fiscal year. If the total
    census for the previous year was 3,600, compute for the nursing staff needed. Show your
    computation on the space provided. Indicate your final answers in the boxes after each
    question.

    1. Categorize patients according to levels of care. (3 points)

    3600 patients X 0.65 = 2,340 


    3600 patients X 0.30 = 1,080 
    3600 patients X 0.05 = 180 

    2. Find the number of nursing care hours (NCH) needed per day at Level I,II,III
    (3 points)

    2,340 X 1.5 = 3,510 NCH needed by 2,340 patients (Level I)


    1,080 X 3 = 3,240 NCH needed by 1,080 patients (Level II)
    180 X 4.5 = 810 NCH needed by 180 patients (Level III)

    Total = 7, 560 

    3. Find the actual number of NCH needed by 3,600 patients per year.

    b. 1, 596 X 0.95 / 10 = 151 nursing personnel as relievers 
    c. 1,596 + 151 = 1, 747 total nursing personnel needed 

    5. Categorize into professional and non- professional. (3 points)

    1, 596 X .40 = 638 nursing attendants
