Northside Open + Spring Fling + Gans Zeedyk + St. Ignatius Girls Invite
We had Mustangs in action at 4 different meets this week! There’s a lot to cover so I’ll just be
able to go over a few outstanding performances.
The first meet of the week was our (perhaps inaugural?) home meet at Winnemac, the
Northside Open. This was the first meet for a lot of our athletes, and the first home meet for
everyone. As a team we did a great job of helping out with the hurdles and representing
Northside well.

And a special shout-out to the race of the meet, the Boy’s 4x400m. The 4x4 is the most fun
event on the track and on Tuesday we saw why. Senior Josiah Shimandle got the baton for the
anchor leg about 10 meters in back of first place, and was charging hard to catch him.
Unfortunately even his fantastic split of 56.3 wasn’t quite enough as the runner from Speer was
able to hold on to the victory, 3:58.5 to 3:58.6.
I wish I could go on about how great this meet was, but we still have triple action from Saturday
to get through.
As a note on these Saturday meets, all across Chicago there were steady 15-20mph winds, and
always conveniently right in the face of whatever sprint event was going on. Which honestly just
makes some of these times even more incredible.
First up on Saturday were the boy’s at Niles West for the Gans Zeedyk Invite. This meet
always has some great competition and Saturday was no exception.
Meet Scorers:
Varsity 100m
7. Michael Adeyemi - 13.01 F/S 300mH
3. Daniel Wang - 53.27
F/S 100m
7. Esteban Vargas - 13.73 Varsity 4x1
8. Eder Peralta - 14.21 6. Patel, Shure, Adeyemi, Kolade - 50.32
Likely due to the windy conditions, we only had one new addition to the Northside All-Time
Outdoor Top 20 list but it was a big one:
Discus
#8. Justin Dinh, JR - 28.68m (94’ 1”)
While the boys were up at Niles West, the girls went down to Steinmetz for their first official
meet on their new track, the inaugural Steinmetz Spring Fling.
Meet Scorers:

4x8
1. Nelson, Myatt, Brasseur, A. Feeney - 12:23.36
Long Jump
6. Oliwia Mucha - 3.16m (10’ 4.5”)
Unfortunately, despite winning most of the events we entered, we ended up taking 2nd in the
meet to Von Steuben, 107 to 78. Nonetheless, we had a really great showing and some
phenomenal performances despite the wind, including a new addition to the Northside All-Time
Outdoor Top 20 list that was INTO THE HEADWIND:
100m
#5. Hana James, SO - 13.90
And finally, down at the St. Ignatius Girls Invite, Elia Ton-That won the girls 1600m in a NEW
SCHOOL RECORD of 5:02.25!!!! That beats her previous school record by a whopping 11.11
seconds!
Several of these performances deserve another special mention, as they mean that we have
some new members of some fairly exclusive clubs:
Girls Sub-15 100m
#19 Hana James - 5/1/21 - Steinmetz HS
Girls Sub-31 200m
#18 Leah Petersen - 4/27/21 - Winnemac Stadium
#19 Hana James - 4/27/21 - Winnemac Stadium
Overall this was an amazing week of performances all-around! Next week we are off for meets,
but will be doing some team time trials
