SUPPORTS
There are various types of supports available to structural
designers. In this lecture we will focus on three main types of
supports. These are;
• roller support,
• hinge (pin) support,
• fixed support.
SUPPORTS-Roller Support

Reactions: There is only one reaction along the

perpendicular direction to the rollers.

Reactions: There are two reactions, one
along the perpendicular direction to the
supporting surface and the other in parallel
direction to the supporting surface.

SUPPORTS-Fixed Support

Reactions: There are three reactions, one along the

perpendicular direction to the supporting surface
one in parallel direction to the supporting surface
and one moment applied on the connection point to
the supporting surface.

LOADING-DISTRIBUTED FORCES

The weight of a rigid-body can be represented by a single force directed

towards the center of the earth. The point of application of the force is
the center of gravity.

SUPPORT REACTIONS

From statics the equations of equilibrium are:

Problem 3.1: Determine the values of the reactions at A and
B.(Neglect the weight of the beams)
Problem 3.2: Determine the values of the reactions at A and

Problem 3.3: Determine the values of the reactions at A.

Problem 3.4: Determine the reaction for the beam loaded as
shown in figure.
Problem 3.5
Problem 3.8 :The Fink truss shown in figure is supported by a roller at A and a
hinge at B. The given loads are normal to the inclined member. Determine the
reaction at A and B.
Hint:Replace the loads by their resultant.
Problem 3.9:
SOLUTION:

all forces about A. Note there will be
no contribution from the unknown
reactions at A.

reaction force components and
couple at E.

a small building. The tension in the
cable is 150 kN.

reaction force components and couple.
