SUPPORTS
There are various types of supports available to structural
designers. In this lecture we will focus on three main types of
supports. These are;
• roller support,
• hinge (pin) support,
• fixed support.

Reactions: There are two reactions, one
along the perpendicular direction to the
supporting surface and the other in parallel
direction to the supporting surface.

Problem 3.4: Determine the reaction for the beam loaded as
shown in figure.
Problem 3.5
Problem 3.8 :The Fink truss shown in figure is supported by a roller at A and a
hinge at B. The given loads are normal to the inclined member. Determine the
reaction at A and B.
Hint:Replace the loads by their resultant.
Problem 3.9:
SOLUTION:
• Create a free-body diagram for the crane.
• Determine reaction at B by solving the
equation for the sum of the moments of
all forces about A. Note there will be
no contribution from the unknown
reactions at A.
• Determine the reactions at A by

M A = 0 : + B(1.5m ) − 9.81 kN(2m )
− 23.5 kN(6m ) = 0
B = +107.1 kN
Fy = 0 : Ay − 9.81 kN − 23.5 kN = 0
Ay = +33.3 kN
