Experiment No: 1

Experiment Name:
Application of Optical Brightening Agent (OBA) on Cotton Woven/Knit Fabric.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Introduction/ Theoretical Background:

Textile fibres do not appear perfectly white due to the presence of certain colored impurities.
During chemical bleaching, colored impurities are either destroyed or de-colored by
oxidation or reduction. Over-bleaching may reduce the fibre strength. Even well bleached
fabrics possess a slight yellowish appearance. This yellowish hue of the materials can be
eliminated by whitening with optical brighteners or fluorescent brightening agents (OBA or
FBA).

Optical brighteners (sometimes called optical

bleaches or fluorescent whitening agents) are
fluorescent white dyes that absorb ultraviolet
region (340 – 370 nm) light of electromagnetic
region, emit back visible blue light region (420 –
470 nm). This property makes optical brightener
effective at masking any yellowing that may be
present in cotton fabric.

The optical brighteners counteract the

yellowness of the fabric by increasing the
reflection of blue light rays. They convert
invisible short-wave ultraviolet rays of sunlight
into visible blue light and have a degree of
whiteness which is comparatively more intense. Figure 1: Reflectance of a bleached cotton
The main use of these dyes is in laundry fabric (A), after adding a blue tint (B) and
detergents and textile finishing. after adding a fluorescent brightener (C).
