Politicians

Each one of you is about to be interviewed by a TV anchorman who has a reputation for
embarrassing politicians and exposing their faults. If this interview goes badly you could be in
danger of losing your job. Luckily someone who works for you managed to steal a copy of the
production team’s notes. You have ten minutes to think about the questions that the interviewer is
likely to ask you and to think of suitable answers that will hopefully save your job.

group 1: You are the Environment Minister


Notes: The Environment Minister is rumoured to ...
1) Own three cars, one of which is a Ferrari.
2) Was apparently seen dropping litter in a park.
3) Own shares in 'McDonalds', who are responsible for cutting down large
sections of the rain forest.
4) Has prepared legislation to allow some national parkland to be developed economically, as
part of the government’s aim to stimulate more jobs in rural areas.

group 2: You are the Foreign Minister


Notes: The Foreign Minister is rumoured to ...
1) On a visit to Latin America, allegedly said, 'I wish I had studied Latin at school then I might
be able to understand these guys.'
2) Thought East Timor was in Scotland.
3) On a visit to the United States, mistook the Vice President for a waiter and asked him to get
a cup of tea.
4) In a recent interview with the French Foreign Minister, the British Foreign Minister offended
her. She called them 'xenophobic' to which they replied, 'Sorry, I don't speak French.'

group 3: You are the Home Secretary


Notes: The Home Secretary allegedly ...
1) One day after they gave a speech on the importance of parents teaching their children
morals, their son was convicted for selling drugs.
2) When younger, they were a supporter of capital punishment.
3) When asked for an opinion on the wrongful imprisonment of six black students, they said,
'Yes, that was a shame but we can't get it right all the time.’
4) On a recent visit to Wales they were quoted as saving 'Wales is a beautiful country. It's a
pity about the people.'

group 4: You are the Education Minister


Notes: The Education Minister allegedly ...
1) They talk about the importance and good standard of state schools but both their children
attend private schools.
2) When asked about increasing class sizes in schools the minister replied '25, 35 - what's the
difference?'
3) Was quoted as saying, 'Mixed Schools are a bad idea because the girls distract the boys.'
4) In the face of possible budget cuts, the minister reportedly said that schools should cut their
arts and sports programs in favour of ‘real’ subjects such as maths and science, and
declared to an assessor that less people should go to university, entering instead the job
market and ‘making themselves useful’.
