MODULE 1 - BAHASA INGGERIS - PAPER 3 - SPEAKING (F4) 2021
How to excel in speaking test?
Remember, speaking is GREAT!
1. G - Greet
Greet the interlocutor and your partner before you start your speaking test. Courtesy is the best
policy.
2. R - Respond
Respond to questions/opinions by saying thank you and give appropriate feedback. You can
always repeat your partner’s ideas by rephrasing their sentences and make it into your own. There
is no mark for contents so there is no harm of using each other’s ideas. During the discussion, you
can make eye contact with your partner. Look at him/her and the interlocutor while talking. Be
confident!
Try to elaborate or expand your ideas by giving examples. You can always use your past
experiences related to the topic in elaborating your ideas because speaking test does not look on
content but focusing on grammar, vocabulary and communicative competence. You MUST use
cohesive devices and complex sentences properly to gain more marks. Practice makes perfect.
4. A - Alert
You must understand the topic at hand and listen to instructions carefully. Even though it is
not your turn yet but you should always listen to your partner’s answers because it will be
useful later.
5. T - Turn taking
Marks are given individually but never try to conquer the discussion. Ask for your friend’s opinion
on your ideas or you can ask them to repeat their answers. If your friend is weak in English, guide
them by asking simple question or by giving example that can help them to get ideas.
To end the discussion Do you have anything else to say? Otherwise, we shall
end this discussion here.
If you have nothing more to add, we shall stop here.
It has been an interesting discussion. Since we have come
to an agreement, I guess it is time to end our discussion.
As both of us have come to an agreement, let’s bring this
discussion to a close.

Looking back on my childhood, I remember sitting in our small kitchen watching my mother cooking. We were living
in Ipoh, Perak. I was then six years old. My parents, my sister, my two brothers and I all lived together in an old
wooden hut. Dad struggled to make a living in his coffee shop. Mum had to worry about our daily bread.
Our kitchen was simple. An earthen stove blackened by smoke forever greeted us with its round mouth. Mum
would start her busy daily routine in the kitchen while I would be sitting, happily watching her in action. She
would sit on a low stool in the kitchen and chop the wood with a clumsy axe. She would place the chopped
wood under the stove and set them alight. As the wood burned, the food she cooked gave off a delicious
aroma.
Times were hard so my mother could only afford to make us ordinary dishes, such as vegetables with dried
shrimp and fried eggs. But for me, sitting at that old wooden table with the whole family, and gobbling up the
steamy rice and the simple food was very much satisfying. Once in a while Mum cooked her favourite dish of
steamed chicken and that would be a big occasion, indeed. By nature, she was a clean and tidy woman, but
sitting by the fire at such moments her hair would be messy, forehead beaded with sweat and her cheeks
covered in grey ash. But her large eyes shone with a beauty only a mother can have. These wonderful meals
Mum laboured so hard to prepare helped brighten our lives even as poverty and hard times weighed us down.
When I was eight, our whole family moved south to Singapore. Life did not improve much as all six of us were
forced to huddle in a rented room. Life conditions were really difficult. Mum just kept quiet and she preferred to
stick with her family behind closed doors, and when she had to stir out of the room, she would go her own
way, minding her own business. She was determined not to let the crowded conditions prevent her from
feeding her family properly. Now Mum would cook using coal instead of firewood. Mum had to buy the coal
from the shop and carry it home. The process of cooking using it was even harder but it did not stop Mum
from giving the best to her family.
I am sure she had much to worry about though she did not share her fears with us. Dad worked very hard and
was out day and night. Mum would cook, share the meal with us and keep a portion for Dad. Then she quickly
put out the fire to reuse the coal. Returning home late in the evening, Dad was tired and hungry but he would
swallow down his cold dinner with no complaint. He understood that coal was expensive. During our first two
years in Singapore, life was a struggle but slowly our fortunes improved.
When I was ten years old, we finally moved into a new apartment. We now had a large kitchen and most
importantly, a gas stove. For Mum, all those years of chopping firewood and carrying coal home were over.
The spontaneous rush of gas which now burst forth at the turn of the knob must have come as a great relief.
Cooking became so much more enjoyable that she bought any new recipe books and tried them all. Working
by the gas stove, she no longer seemed distracted by distant thoughts although she still missed her previous
kitchen. Mum looked even happier when Dad started to help out in the kitchen. Dad even accompanied her on
shopping sprees. Meals which had once been a source of comfort now became one of joy.
In the years that followed, grey hair had slowly appeared on my parents’ heads and so had a sense of
contentment with their lives. They now live in a good-sized apartment and the kitchen is equipped with a gas
stove, an oven and a microwave – all conveniences that once seemed so impossible. Sitting on the balcony
amidst the gorgeous flowers, they enjoy peace after those difficult years.
19 In paragraph 2, why does the writer use the phrase happily watching her in
action? A She enjoyed being of help to her mother.
B She felt contented to be with her mother.
C She admired her mother’s cooking skills.
D She found her mother’s routine amazing.
20 In paragraph 3, what does the writer say about her mother’s character?
A She was discouraged by the economic hardship faced by the family.
B She was conscious of the way she looked when she was cooking.
C She was concerned about what the future holds for her children.
21 In paragraph 4, how did the writer describe their new life in Singapore?
A They could not go out much.
B The mother started a business.
C The family had to depend on others.
D They had to live in a cramped place.
22 In paragraph 5, what was the proof that their lives changed for the better?
A It took them ten years to turn their lives around.
B They could afford to get a place of their own.
C The family reused the coal to save money.
D The father did not complain anymore.
25 How does the writer feel about her parents in the last
paragraph? A grateful that they can grow old together
B relieved that their life has become easier
Cenvious of the possessions they nohave
Ddisappointed that they are not as active as they once were

of review sites on the Internet, covering every possible product category.
In this era, those employed in retail stores do not only face customers who are knowledgeable
about their products, but they also have to compete with the advantages and
convenience of online stores. 31 . An online store doesn’t have to worry much about overhead costs,
which are a normal part of retail store operations. A host of other expenses such as utility bills and sales taxes are
all factors that place retailers at a disadvantage. This often allow online stores to set a price lower than
retailers. 32 . Thus, it is not a surprise that online stores are far more appealing for customers
to shop.

Most people jump into exercise without warming up or end the exercise without
cooling down. They do not realize the importance of either warming up or cooling
down. In fact, cooling down is necessary after a vigorous exercise. This is because our
muscle produces waste products that need to be taken out of the system. So, you need to
cool down to ensure the body is given the opportunity to do so. You should continue to
move slowly instead of sitting down.

1 It is perhaps the most reproduced, recycled and ripped off image of the 20th Century. Che
Guevara, his eyes framed by heavy brows, a single-starred beret pulled over his unruly hair, stares
out of the shot with glowering intensity. It's now more than 50 years since the Argentine-born
rebel was shot dead, so any young radicals who cheered on his revolutionary struggles in Cuba
and Bolivia are well into middle age.
2 But the image has been infinitely repeated - emblazoned on T-shirts and sprayed on to walls,
transformed into pop art and used to wrap ice-creams and sell cigarettes - and its appeal has not
faded. "There is no other image like it. What other image has been sustained in this way?" asks
Trisha Ziff, the curator of a touring exhibition on the iconography of Che. "Che Guevara has
become a brand. And the brand's logo is the image, which represents change. It has becomes the
icon of the outside thinker, at whatever level - whether it is anti-war, pro-green or anti-
globalisation," she says.
"I deliberately designed it to breed like rabbits," he says of his image, which removes the
4
original photograph's shadows and volume to create a stark and emblematic graphic portrait. "I
was determined that the image should receive the broadest possible circulation," he adds.
5 For Ms Ziff, Che Guevara's murder also marks the beginning of the mythical image. "The
birth of the image happens at the death of Che in October 1967," she says. "He was good-looking,
he was young, but more than that, he died for his ideals, so he automatically becomes an icon."
The story of the original photograph, of how it left Cuba and was carried by admirers to
6
Europe before being reinterpreted in Mr Fitzpatrick's iconic drawing, is a fascinating journey in
its own right. Alberto Korda captured his famous frame on 5 March 1960 during a mass funeral
in Havana. A day earlier, a French cargo ship loaded with ammunition had exploded in the city's
harbour, killing some 80 Cubans - an act Fidel Castro blamed on the US. Korda, Fidel Castro's
official photographer, describes Che's expression in the picture, which he labelled "Guerrillero
Heroico" (the heroic fighter), as "encabronadao y dolente" - angry and sad. Unpublished, the
picture was seen only by those who passed through Korda's studio, where it hung on a wall. One
man who brought the image to Europe was the leftist Italian intellectual, Giangiacomo Feltrinelli,
who distributed posters across Italy in 1967. After that, Korda's photograph made an appearance
in several European magazines. Mr Fitzpatrick first came across a tiny version of it in the German
weekly. Only months later, when he finally got his hands on a larger version of the photograph,
was he able to produce the image that has such universal appeal. "I'd got an original copy of the
image sent to me by a guy involved with a group of Dutch anarchists, called the Provo."
7
After Che Guevara's death, an outraged Mr Fitzpatrick furiously reprinted originals of the
poster and sent it to left-wing political activist groups across Europe. Part of his fury stemmed from
vivid memories working behind a bar in Ireland as a teenager, and seeing Che walk in. The
revolutionary was briefly exploring the homeland of his Irish ancestors during a stopover on a flight
to Moscow. "I must have been around 16," Mr Fitzpatrick remembers. "It was a bright, sunny
morning. I knew immediately who he was. He was an immensely charming man - likeable,
8 roguish, good fun and very proud of being Irish."
Mr Fitzpatrick's version of Che arrived on the continent as many countries were in a state
of flux, says Ms Ziff. "His death was followed by demonstrations, first in Milan and then
elsewhere. Very soon afterwards there was the Prague Spring and May '68 in France. Europe
was in turmoil. People wanted change, disruption and rebellion and he became a symbol of that
9 change."
As time went on, the meaning and the man represented by the image became separated in
the western context, Ms Ziff explains. But in Latin America, she points out, Che Guevara's face
remains a symbol of armed revolution and indigenous struggle. Combining capitalism and
commerce, religion and revolution, the icon remains unchallenged, Ms Ziff says. "There is no
other image that remotely takes us to all these different places."
20. In paragraph 2, according to Trisha Ziff, who does the image represent well?
A. ice-cream and cigarette sellers
B. those supporting military intervention
C. ones who may be looking for revolutionary change
D. the poorest generations
21. In paragraph 3, what didn’t the graphic image’s creator try to make money out of its use?
A. he didn’t need the money
B. to help its spread
C. he considers profit to be ‘anti-revolutionary’
D. he didn’t know it was being used without permission
22. In paragraph 6, where was the original photo in the years after it was taken?
A. in the possession of the photographer
B. on the tour throughout Europe
C. in Fidel Castro’s office in Havana
D. it remained undeveloped
23. In paragraph 8, what persuaded Jim Fitzpatrick to create the image?
A. ambition
B. greed
C. sadness

Millan was in his 20s before he finally managed to reach America. 31. Later, he
got a job working in a place that takes care of dogs and people began to notice that Millan had a way
with dogs. Soon more and more people began asking him to help them out with their pets. His first
real break came when Hollywood actor Will Smith asked Millan for a hand with his dog. The actor
and his wife were so impressed with Millan that they recommended him to all their friends.
Today, Millan has achieved his dream. He has his own dog psychology centre, he's the
author of a well-known book and he has his own popular television show called “The Dog

While growing up, we were told by guidance counsellors, career advice books, the news media and
others to ‘follow our passion’. This advice assumes that we all have a pre-existing passion waiting to be
discovered. If we have the courage to discover this calling and match it to our source of income, the thinking
goes, we shall end up happy. In the same vein, if we lack this courage, we will end up feeling bored and
unfulfilled. True, a small group of people may find this advice sensible, because they have a clear passion.
Maybe they have always known they wanted to be doctors, writers or musicians and cannot imagine being
anything else.
However, this philosophy, which may be termed Cult of Passion, puts a lot of pressure on the rest of us –
and demands long deliberation. If we are not careful, it tells us, we may end up missing our true calling. Even
after we make a choice, we are still not free from its effects. Every time our work becomes hard, we are pushed
towards an existential crisis, centred on what for many is an irritatingly unanswerable question: ‘Is this what I’m
really meant to be doing?’ this constant doubt generates anxiety and continuous job-hopping.
The alternatives to this career philosophy is based on this simple premise: For someone in a new
position, the right question is not, ‘What can this job offer me?’ but, instead, ‘What can I offer this job?’ The
traits that lead people to love their work are general and have little to do with a job’s specifics. These traits
include a sense of autonomy and the feeling that you are good at what you do and you have a positive
impact in the workplace. Decades of research on workplace motivation back this up. These traits can be
found in many jobs, but they have to be earned. Building valuable skills is hard and takes time.
Cal Newport decided after minimal deliberation to go to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
(MIT), a private research university in Cambridge, Massachusetts, known traditionally for research and
education and its selective admission of students. True to his alternative career philosophy, he was
confident that all three of his career options could be transformed into a source of passion, and this
confidence freed him from worry about making a wrong choice. He ended up choosing MIT, mainly because
of a slight preference for its location on the East Coast.
During Cal’s initial years as graduate student, he did not feel he had found his true calling. The beginning
of doctoral training was rough. He was not skilled enough to make contributions to the research literature, which
frustrated him. In addition, at a place like MIT, he was surrounded by brilliance and he had doubts in whether he
belonged there. If he had subscribed to the ‘follow our passion’ philosophy, he probably would have left during
those first years, worried that he did not feel love for his work every day. Yet, he persisted, as he knew that his
sense of fulfillment would grow over time. Indeed, as he became better at his job, he worked diligently and as his
competence grew, so did his engagement in his academic pursuits. Presently, Cal Newport is a computer
science professor at Georgetown University and he loves his job. The most important lesson he can draw from
his experience is that this love has nothing to do with working out at an early age that he was meant to be a
professor and there was nothing special about his choosing this particular path. What mattered was what he did
once he had made his choice. He realized that passion was
not necessarily something you followed but it was something that would follow you as you put in the hard
work to become valuable to the world.
Cal Newport’s case went against the grain of philosophy espoused by self-help books and career-
building workshops that love to peddle one secret to a successful career – follow your passion. ‘Following your
bliss’ may be perfectly good advice, but when it comes to building sustainable success in your career, the
answer might not be that obvious, says Monique Valcour, a professor of management at EDHEC Business
School in France, who has spent fifteen years researching careers. As Valcour describes it, ‘Year after year, you
perform work that makes full use of your skills and challenges you to develop new ones. Your work not only
interests you, it gives you a sense of meaning. You enjoy opportunities for learning and development. You work
with people who energize you. You are confident that your skills and competencies make you valuable and
marketable and that you can access opportunities through your network. You are able to fit your work together
with the other things in your life that are important to you, like family, friends and leisure’.
To help build sustainable careers and lives, you have to redefine success beyond money and
power, and include the metrics of well-being, wisdom, wonder and giving back. Ultimately, success is not
about material wealth or position, but about living the life you want, not just the life you settle for.

B. contrast
C. comparison

24. In order to build sustainable success in one’s career, Valcour suggests the following except

Cosplay refers to the act of dressing up as a fictional character from a comic book,
cartoon, video game, TV series or movie. It has become a hobby for many, and cosplayers
are now a common sight at fan conventions around the world.
To discover the origins of the cosplay phenomenon, we may have to go all the way
back to the very first Worldcon (World Science Convention) in 1938. One of the attendees,
avid sci-fi enthusiast Forrest J Ackerman, came dressed as a green-caped superhero. He
may have started something, for in subsequent years, science fiction-themed ‘masquerades’
became an established part of Worldcon.
Nowadays, cosplay is strongly associated with Japanese popular culture. The word
cosplay itself was first used by Nobuyuki Takahashi in the 1980s when he combined the words
costume play in an article for a Japanese magazine. By the 1990s, cosplay was booming in
Japan, where the proliferation of manga and anime provide plentiful inspiration for cosplayers.
The complexity of cosplay costumes can vary. Costumes can range from simple
designs to intricate and detailed wearable works of art. Cosplay costume manufacturing is a
big industry in Japan: a profit of 35 billion yen was reported for the year 2008. Costumes
may be purchased online or bought from dealers at conventions. Some cosplayers use a
purchased costume as a starting point, adding further detail to achieve the desired effect.
Others prefer to make their own costume from scratch. Talented costume makers may work
on commission, creating handmade costumes specifically tailored to an individual.
The goal of a cosplayer is to recreate a particular comic book, TV, movie or video
game character as faithfully as possible. In order to replicate the look of the chosen fictional
character, the costume maker will study the character in great detail, paying attention to the
size, shape, colour and texture of the character’s clothes. The imitation goes beyond just the
costume, and cosplayers often use hair dye, wigs, contact lenses or temporary tattoos to
resemble their chosen character more closely. They may also adopt the mannerisms of the
character. A character’s trademark weapon may be copied too, although for obvious
reasons conventions have strict rules about what is acceptable.
With cosplay now such a prominent part of fan conventions, cosplay competitions are
now a common feature of many of these events. There are even dedicated international cosplay
competitions where cosplays can showcase their talent. The most famous of these is the World
Cosplay Summit, the finals of which are held in Japan. To participate, the costumes must be
handmade by the wearer and be based on a character from a Japanese video game,
anime or manga. Contestants are required to give a performance and are judged on their
inventiveness, entertainment value and, of course, faithfulness to the original.
Cosplay is now even more accessible thanks to the Internet. Cosplayers can now
connect online and show off their costumes on social media or cosplay websites. Cosplay is
truly a worldwide phenomenon, and with conventions continuing to attract thousands of
cosplayers and hundreds of thousands of fans, it looks set to continue well into the future.

Red Nose Day (RND) is a well-known event in the UK. The aim of the day is to raise
money for a charity called Comic Relief which helps people in need in Africa and in the UK.
Comic Relief was started in 1985 by the scriptwriter Richard Curtis. 27 . Richard came up
with the idea to start Comic Relief to help the severe famine in Ethiopia. It’s called Red Nose
Day as on this day many people buy a plastic red nose to wear! The proceeds from selling
these red noses goes to the charity.
Red Nose Day takes place every two years in the spring and it is now so well established that
many people consider it to be an unofficial national holiday. For example, many schools have
non-uniform days. 28
The slogan for the last RND was ‘Do Something Funny for Money’ and the money that was
collected helped to fund projects in the following areas: treating malaria, education, maternal
health and mental health. 29 Money-raising events take place all over the country and
many schools participate. People also donate money by post, in banks, by phone using a credit

So for anyone who wants to start a YouTube channel, Jessii has some advice. 31 . Don't

something you are passionate about, not something that is currently on trend. Make inspiring
videos. People can tell when you’re forcing content because you just want to be popular.
There are also some other things to consider before starting a YouTube channel. It’s a good
idea to think about privacy and safety. 32 . Another thing you might want to do is turn off the
comments so you don’t find any ‘haters’ like Jessii did.

Questions 33-40
We interviewed six teenagers about what community service means to them. Read the
text below and answer the questions that follow.
I started with something that I’m passionate about – joining a project that gives free meals to
poor families in my neighbourhood. That experience taught me to be more compassionate for
the needy
When I was 13 years old, I helped out at a nearby animal shelter. I feed the animals and
play with them. It is very beneficial and I get new experiences doing things that I’ve never
done before.
I go to an old folks’ home as a volunteer and spend time with the residents there. Listening to
the stories about their past experiences has taught me some useful life lessons. Once in a
while, I bring along a guitar to entertain them
Last year, we had a class project where we had to complete 8 hours of community service.
So my class decided to help clean up the beach. Although very tiring, I feel that doing this
type of community service is rewarding.
I wanted to support my local library so I set up a cosy Story Corner and read to children on
Saturdays. I hope that one day my classmates will join me.

Questions 33-40
The article is on clothes shopping on budget. Read the text below and answer the questions
that follow.
Clothes shopping on a budget
In England, we have shops called ‘charity shops’, where people donate their old clothes,
shoes, books, CDs, DVDs, and children's toys and games. In America,
they are called ‘thrift shops’ - which you may know from
Macklemore’s hit song! I love these shops, because you can often
find a bargain - brand new clothes with the tags still on them, or real
vintage items which haven’t got a big price tag!
The only downside to charity shopping is that you have to search through everything in the
shop, which can take a lot of time. Also, sometimes it is disappointing - I have searched for
hours before and not found a single thing to buy! But I find this with big department stores
in shopping centres too, so perhaps it is just occasional bad luck! The majority of the time,
however, I have found some bargains, and saved lots of money! In the past, I have found
lovely handbags, new shoes, hardly-worn clothes, and some fantastic second-hand books
and DVDs at a fraction of the price that you’d find in a normal shop. And the best part about
charity shopping is that the money goes to a good cause!

Module 1 FORM 4: Writing
WRITING TIPS 1
How can you make your writing more coherent?
Many students wish that they could write a good essay, especially in examinations. One
essential quality for a good piece of writing is coherence. In essay writing, the flow of ideas
from one sentence to the next should be smooth and logical. Without coherence, the reader
or examiner may encounter difficulties in understanding the main points that you are trying to
make.
To ensure that your paragraphs have unity, there are two things to keep in mind: it must
have a single topic (found in the topic sentence or main idea) and sentences (supporting
details) that provide more details than the topic sentence, while maintaining the focus on the
idea presented. For instance, the paragraph below shows a lack of unity:
Non-cohesive sample:
Dogs are canines that people domesticated a long time ago. Wolves
are predecessors of dogs and they help people in a variety of ways. There are
various reasons for owning a dog, and the most important is companionship.
Notice that the ideas in the non-cohesive sample are not arranged logically. The sentences
are not connected and give the readers new ideas that are not found in the topic sentence.
Thus, the paragraph is hard to read, leaving readers confused about the topic.
Cohesive sample:
Dogs are canines that people domesticated a long time ago, primarily
for practical reasons. Even though dogs descended from wolves, they are
tame and can be kept in households. Since they are tame, people have
various reasons for owning a dog, such as companionship.
The second example, the cohesive sample, has ideas arranged logically. All ideas in this
sample flow from the topic sentence. In addition, they give more details about the topic while
maintaining their focus on the topic sentence.

Module 1 FORM 4:
Writing
To establish the links that readers need, you can use cohesive devices. They are known as
linking words, linkers, connectors, discourse markers or transitional words. We use cohesive
devices to link sentences, paragraphs or pieces of text. Readers can follow along the train of
thoughts when sentences, ideas and details fit together. In other words, cohesive devices
make our content coherent. Nonetheless, overusing cohesive devices or not using them
enough might affect the readers negatively.
To establish the links that readers need, you can use the methods listed below. Note that
good writers use a combination of these methods. Do not rely on and overuse any single
method – especially transitional words.

Hi Amy,
I am glad that you have brought this up as I had nothing planned for the holiday. I am totally excited and I know
just the place for our picnic. It will be at central park just beside East Road. We could also play ball there as the
park is huge. Don’t forget to bring an extra matt to place our foods on just in case I lost mine. Don’t worry about
the foods, I can handle them, though you could bring some snacks if you would like to. The more, the better. I
am also thinking that we could have Jack and David come. It will be more fun with them around. Alright, do
update me if something comes up.
Bye!

I am glad you have watched ‘Ironman: The Series’. I knew you would enjoy the drama
as much as I do. My favourite character is of course the main character, Tony Stark.
For some people, he can be quite a narcissistic but I think he is just a self-assured man.
I also like that he is a successful businessman. He does put his all in keeping his father’s
company going.
Finally, we both can learn a lot from him. However, the most important lesson is to keep

caught in traffic jams , look for parking or pay for high parking fees. They could shop at the
comfort of their homes thus saving time and money. They can also compare product quality
and prices before purchasing. It is even more advisable during this COVID-19 pandemic to
