receive the health care that they need to
lead active, productive lives.

leadership

• Several key issues will influence and
create change in the delivery of health
care :
- 1-economics of health care
- 2-competitive nature of the industry
- 3-shortages of professional health care
personnel.
- 4-focus on quality outcomes.
• We have unstable situation that requires

change to occur rapidly .
• This change demands flexibility,
intelligence, and new leadership expertise
• manager must have a good understanding
of nursing costs (financial skills)
• cost effectiveness of nursing care need

continued study to ensure the pt
outcomes & economically
• increased intensity of care caused by

shorter hospital stays & aging of the
population .
• To improve care it require the institutions

to focus on consumer satisfaction in
addition to the quality of clinical outcome

MANAGEMENT FUNCTIONS
 1- PLANNING: All other functions are
dependent on it Data are gathered and analyzed
• manager must predict what is future needs &
set objectives .
• Priorities must be set .
• The strategies sequenced in a time frame .
• Planning of policies and procedures .
• Budgets are used in planning .
• Planning is the basis for time management,

organizing
 The personnel can implement the plans
with efficiency and effectiveness,:
 Establish of organizational structure .
• Relationships are delineated.
• Job analysis: (positions , qualifications .etc)

STAFFING
 STAFFING: recruiting, selecting,
orienting developing personnel to
accomplish the goals of the organization.
• determining assignment systems , case

method, functional, team, primary nursing.
• schedules to meet the needs of the

clients, personnel, and institution.
DIRECTION
(Direct personnel and activities to
accomplish the goals of the organization.
 Motivating and leading personnel .
 Knowledge of one’s leadership style .

CONTROLLING
(Ensures progress toward objectives
according to plan and involves setting
standards, measuring performance against
those standards . (reporting results & take

LEVELS OF MANAGEMENT:
 Top managers: Responsible for overall
operations.
 Middle managers: coordinate nursing

activities of several units.
 First line managers: (supervisors, or

head nurses.) directly responsible for the
actual production of nursing services.
MANAGER NEEDS THREE TYPES OF
SKLLS
1) Technical skills: Involve methods,
procedures, techniques & knowledge of
work being performed.
 2) Human relations skills, ability to
motivate and lead others and to manage
conflict.
 3) Conceptual skills require analytical
thinking and being able to perceive trends
of the organization.
