LESSON

Characteristics of the Different Art Forms and its Artistic Expressions

The arts refers to the theory, human

application and physical expression of creativity
found in human cultures and societies through skills
and imagination in order to produce objects,
environments and experiences.
Major Constituents of the Arts

1. Visual arts are art forms such as painting, drawing,

printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, photography, video,
filmmaking, design, crafts, and architecture.

Film, also called movie, motion picture or moving picture, is a visual art form
used to simulate experiences that communicate ideas, stories, perceptions, feelings,
beauty, or atmosphere through the use of moving images. These images are generally
accompanied by sound, and more rarely, other sensory stimulations.

2. Literature, most generically, is anybody or collection

of written work. It is classified according to whether it is
fiction or non-fiction, and whether it is poetry or prose.
Fiction can be further distinguished according to major
forms such as the novel, short story, or drama; and such
works are often categorized according to historical periods
or their adherence to certain aesthetic features or genre.

Drama is the specific mode of fiction represented in performance: a play, opera,

mime, ballet, etc., performed in a theater, or on radio or television.

3. Performing arts refer to forms of art in which artists

use their voices, bodies or inanimate objects to convey
artistic expression. Theatre, music, dance and object
manipulation, and other kinds of performances are present
in all human cultures.

Dance is a performing art form consisting of purposefully selected sequences of

human movement. This movement has aesthethic and symbolic value, and is
acknowledged as dance by performers and observers within a particular culture.

Music is an art form, and cultural activity, whose medium is sound. General
definitions of music include common elements such as pitch, rhythm, dynamics, and the
sonic qualities of timbre and texture. Music is performed with a vast range of instruments
and vocal techniques ranging from singing to rapping; there are solely instrumental
pieces, solely vocal pieces and pieces that combine singing and instruments.
4. Culinary arts, in which culinary means “related to
cooking”, are the cuisine arts of food preparation, cooking,
and presentation of food, usually in the form of meals.

Some art forms combine a visual element with performance (e.g. cinematography), or
with performance (e.g. comics). From prehistoric cave paintings to modern-day films, art
serves as a vessel for storytelling and conveying humankind’s relationship with the
environment.
