This book is compiled by the renowned architect Yasmeen Lari and Mihail S. Lari. Architect and

This comprehensive book laden with illustrations and maps provides an insightful look at the
evolution of architecture and urban fabric Karachi's under various influences and political orders
of their time. The book is rather presented as an expressive combination of historical
documentary, architectural history and social observation. The authors have attempted to weave
altogether an account on politics, life and buildings of Karachi, the largest and richest city of
Pakistan which also served as the first capital of Pakistan soon after its Independence in 1947.
The book enable the readers to travel through the time reminiscence starting from Alexander’s
Krokola and Debal of Muhammad Bin Qasim hinting to today’s Karachi. What was initially a
small fishing village transformed into a major port and an important city during the British
Empire; and finally becoming the largest and prominent city of Independent Pakistan.
The book is important in a sense that it provided a knowledge premise for the preservation of
historic buildings in Karachi after the promulgation of Sindh Cultural Heritage (Preservation)
Act.
The book is valuable in the sense that it toiled to present a comprehensive and authentic record
of the past as previously not enough historic records were available on the subject. Map,
drawings, and manuscripts were uncovered from Pakistan, India and London.
The book is divided into three parts where the first part presents a consolidated history of
Karachi talking about three different durations i.e. the first talks about Karachi’s history as
fishermen’s village i.e. Krokola or Kalachi-jo-Ghote; the second part talks about the British
Interest in Sindh while the third duration is based on the British’s annexation of Sindh.
However, the second part of the book talks about the development of Karachi during the times of
different political representations in the region. The name ‘Dual Karachi’ is basically elaborated
in this section of the book which means that the city because of staying under several political
influences adopted a rather peculiar attitude and development pattern exhibiting a dual character
of the city. The second part of the book also talks about the planning and development of the
city, its several quarters and its transformation into a modern city.
The third and the final part of the book talks about various architectural styles and puts forth the
renowned buildings categorized under these movements. This section covers the Early Colonial
period, the Christian and the Indo-Gothic, several architectural patterns, the local culture of the
city, the Anglo Mughal architecture which was considered appropriate for the late nineteenth
century and finally talks about the wide-ranging architectural styles of the twentieth century.
