Simple past of regular verbs

Pronunciation

In this video we are going to remember the pronunciation of simple past of regular verbs.

The past simple of all regular verbs in English end in -ed.

For example: the simple past of the verb


Start is started
Work is worked
Save is saved

As you could notice, -ed has three ways of pronunciation:


 /t/
 /d/
 /ɪd/

Now let's see the three rules:

1. Verbs ending in one of the following sounds /p/, /k/, /f/, /s/, /ʃ/ or /tʃ/ have /t/
sound.

For example:
stop - stopped
walk - walked
laugh - laughed
pass - passed
wash - washed
watch - watched

2. Most verbs or verbs ending in a voiced sound: /b/,/g/, /l/, /m/, /n/, /r/, /v/, /z/ have /d/
sound.

For example:
Rub - rubbed
Beg - begged
Call - called
Claim - claimed
Clean - cleaned
Offer - offered
Love - loved
Realize - realized
3. Verbs ending in the sounds: /t/, /d/ have /ɪd/ sound.

For example:
Want - wanted
Need - needed
Educate - educated
Graduate - graduated
Add - added
