Chapter 1

The Problem

Introduction

The occupational health and safety is appertaining to help a person or

workers in the workplace to avoid danger that is likely to cause injury, pain,

harm, loss. Occupational health and safety is a common procedure in all

aspects of working in terms of hazard in the workplace, it is a careful or

organized plan that controls, to prevent risk, in the way of working until work

or something is done. Naturally it concerned with the safety, health and welfare

of people at work according to World Health Organization (2016)

Manny different types of hazard that you can find and see especially in

the workplace, that concur by Fit et al (2017) and said every workplace has

hazard, possibly people are not aware that these hazards may harm themselves

if they can`t find solutions or apply safety procedure. According to North et al

(2015) Safety in the workplace is everyone’s responsibility no one is exempted.

The makers of this research want to make this kind of study titled the

awareness level of senior high school in applying occupational health and

safety to know if there are students valuing the importance of applying safety

procedure on their own field. The makers of this research interest in this kind

of study because looks like many students nowadays are not aware of the risk

that caused by hazard in the workplace.

Statement of the Problem

This study determined the awareness level in applying occupational

health and safety to the students of General Santos City National Secondary

School of Arts and Trades in Senior High School level major in Computer

Systems Servicing.

Specifically this research seeks answer to the following problem:

1. What are the occupational health and safety procedure?

2. What are the awareness level of Senior high school in applying

occupational health and safety procedure?

Significance of the Study

There is a need of information on the awareness level of senior high

school in applying occupation health and safety. The study can benefit the

following:

To the researchers, that they will be aware on applying occupational

health and safety specially when working on their own workplace. They can

also know if there are materials used and how can they apply occupational

health and safety.

To the learners, that this might help them when it comes on their own

field that applying occupational health and safety procedure is a must.

To the teachers, that this might help them on their own field and speak

to the students to be aware about applying occupational health and safety for

their safeties.

To the DepEd officials, that this will might help them on the work like

hazardous and specially implement the awareness of applying occupational

health and safety in all aspects of school for the safeties on the work.

To the parents, to ensure the safety of their child when they apply

occupational health and safety especially when their child is enroll in a

technical vocational type school.

Scope of Delimitation

This study focused on the awareness level of senior high school in

applying occupational health and safety learners of General Santos City

National Secondary School of Arts and Trades, SY: 2019-2020. This study used

Quantitative type of research in which the respondents are 10 students of

senior high school in different sections. Each student will be given a survey

questionnaire to determine the awareness level of senior high school in

applying occupational health and safety at General Santos City National

Secondary School of Arts and Trades.

Review of Related Literature and Related Studies

This Chapter presents the related literature, related studies, conceptual

framework and hypothesis of the study.

Review Related Literature

Occupational Safety and Health also commonly referred to as

occupational health and safety, occupational health or workplace health and

safety is a multidisciplinary field concerned with the safety at the field.

According to World health Organization (2016) the occupational health and

safety is concerned with the safety, health and welfare of people at work.

Occupational Safety

According to Warphana (2019) Occupational safety is a state of being

spared from hazards during work. Occupational Safety is one of the factors to

do at work. There is no person in the world who desires an accident to happen

when working in various workplaces. Thomas Sukardi (2019) Stated that

Occupational safety heavily depends on types, form, and environment which

the work is performed.

Occupational Health

Occupational health is a specialization of health and practice which aims

to give workers degrees of health as high as possible, in terms of physical,

mental and social health by means of preventive or curative effort to diseases

or health problems related to work and environment or to common illness.

According to Wharphana et al (2019) Occupational health is a state of being

safe and secure from any affliction, damage and harm in the workplace,

whether occurring in the moment of using work tools, materials and type of

machinery during processing, packing and storage, or during maintenance and

securing of place and environment of work.

Safety in the workplace is everyone’s responsibility. Occupational health

and safety practices can benefit performers or workers from risk in the

workplace, According to Vinodkumar (2010), Occupational Safety and Health

Practices are the strategies, policies, activities and procedures that can be

implement by the organization to ensure safety.

In computers you are much less likely to injure yourself or damage

hardware components too even computer peripherals may damage if you don’t

apply occupational health and safety when you are in work. An example of

electronic static discharge is the small shock that you receive when you walk

across a carpeted room and touch a doorknob. Although the small shock is

harmless to you, the same electrical charge passing from you to a computer
can damage its components. Self-grounding or wearing an antistatic wrist

strap can prevent electronic static discharge damage to computer components.

Occupational Health and safety procedure

The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and

World Health Organization have the commonalities in term or referring the

occupational health and safety. According to TESDA (2014) Occupational

health and safety refers to the legislation, policies, procedures and activities

that aim to protect the health, safety and welfare of all people at the workplace.

Safety methods are used when working at the workplace. These are the

safety procedures that we must apply when working in computer field

according to TESDA (2014). Always power off the computer and unplug the

computer before working on it, Take away any liquid near your working area to

avoid getting electrocuted or accidentally damaging computer parts, be careful

with the tools may cause short circuit, Always ground or discharge yourself

before touching any part of the computer, Do not use excessive force if things

don’t quite slip into place, Clean the area before and after using it to maintain

sanitation and prevent accidents, Hold the components on the edges and do

not touch the Integrated Circuit(IC) parts, Always wear personal protective

equipment in accordance with organizations Occupational health and safety

procedures and practices, Make sure the pins are properly aligned when

connecting a cable connector and Contingency measures during workplace

accidents, fire another emergencies are recognized.

Awareness level

The awareness of an student`s in applying occupational health and

safety is very important when they began or working in the field although many

students know the hazard but not concerned about their safeties. According to

thamrin et al (2016) students were not concerned about the risk even if they

understood the hazard.

Vocational School workshops or laboratories contain hazards, students

are not fully aware about the risk that caused by the hazard in the workplace

specially when they are working on the workplace, According to Warphana et al

(2019) Occupational health and safety is not full realized during learning

activity.

According to Sia.org.au et al (2007) Despite an increased interest in

examining workplaces from an insider`s perspective, there has been little

scholarly focus within the literature on qualitative insider research, particularly

in the field of occupational health and safety. There are three key elements that

provide strength and veracity to insider research: the people, the organization;

and the insider. These three elements are interdependent, dynamic and

reciprocal. The Importance of insider research is the interplay between these

three elements and how they can manifest into an intensity of research that

cannot be derived to the same extent from an external positioning. These three

elements provide a useful framework for conceptualizing the conduct of

research that is relevant to the needs of the organization, pragmatic in its

approach and holistic in its application. This approach is particularly useful in

the field of Occupational health and safety.

Review of Related Studies

Occupational Health and Safety awareness among international students

as a diverse group of young workers in Australia by Yahya thamrin, Dino

Pisaniello, and Cally Guerin (2017) According to these aspects, the aims of this

research are to explore international students working experiences, and their

awareness on occupational health and safety. In the study of the author`s sixty

percent reported that they did not receive any occupational health and safety

training before commencing the work and 10% reported that they had

experienced an injury in an Australian workplace. Of those with occupational

health and safety training, 43% experienced injury after the training. About

65% of students felt that work adversely impacted on study, with tiredness

being the main form of interference. In Conclusion, international students have

lack of occupational health and safety awareness. Universities are effectively

sponsors of students into the local community, but have a limited awareness of

their contribution to the local workforce. A series of recommendations are

made for the universities, occupational health and safety regulators, ISB

providers and future researchers.

Implementation of occupational health and safety in state vocational

school of TKBB expertise competency in Yogyakarta by the corresponding

author Adie Warphana and Thomas Sukardi (2019) This research aims to
understand occupational health and safety knowledge level of seventh-grade

students from various state of vocational schools of stone and concrete

construction engineering competency of expertise in Yogyakarta, their

occupational health and safety attitude, and their level of occupational health

and safety implementation.

Authors Zanko M & Dawson P. (2012) publicized Occupational health

and safety management in organization. In examining the research literature

on occupational health and safety, this paper argues that the growth in the

number of specialist in occupational health and safety has resulted in an

emphasis on policy and practice away from more scholastic concerns

previously addressed by academics in the disciplined of psychology and

sociology. A hiatus has occurred, and this is evidenced by the general absence

of studies in management, even though occupational health and safety is

increasingly seen as a key operational and strategic concern of business

organizations. The authors call for Occupational health and safety to be placed

firmly on the research agenda of management scholars, and advocate the need

for greater conceptual development, empirical study and theoretical reflection

to complement existing pragmatic concerns of occupational health and safety

specialists. The authors advocate the value of extended case studies which

examine occupational health and safety in context and overtime in particular

workplace settings. These remains considerable scope to develop this field

further and, in conclusion, particular attention is drawn to the value of process

oriented contextual approaches for understanding occupational health and

safety management in organizations.
