COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course introduces the student to the management and administration of financial institutions.
Topics include introduction to management; asset, liability and capital management decisions;
administration of lending activities; pricing of financial services; and integrative management
techniques.

COURSE PREREQUISTITE:
FINA 1310

RATIONALE:
Adequate asset/liability management is crucial to the survival of financial institutions in today’s
competitive environment. The course will provide basic understanding of the principles of
asset/liability management for students pursuing careers in the banking industry.

Unit I. Current Banking Structures and Regulations


A. Describe the current banking structure and regulations.
B. Identify changes and trends in the banking environment.

Unit II. Measuring a Banks Financial Performance


A. Explain the purpose and construction of a banks balance sheet.
B. Explain the purpose and construction of a banks income statement.
C. Describe four methods for measuring risk:
1. Liquidity risk
2. Interest rate risk
3. Credit risk
4. Capitol risk

Unit III. Asset and Liability Management


A. Describe how to determine a banks reserve needs.
B. Explain how a banks liquidity needs are measured.
C. Describe the sources of liquidity.
D. Describe the characteristics and uses of various short-term debt
securities.
E. Explain appropriate strategies during market appreciation and
depreciation.
F. Describe the various types of bank deposits and non-deposit sources of
