knees extend, causing your hips and ankles to move as
well. With your foot fixed on the ground, there is no
way you can move your knee without causing movement
at the hip and knee.

However, if you were to remain seated and extend


your knee, your hip and ankle would not move. This is
an open kinetic chain activity. The distal segment is
free to move while the proximal segment(s) can remain
stationary (Fig. 5-14). With open-chain activities, the
limb segments are free to move in many directions. For
example, if you are lying on a bed with your arm in the
air, you can move your shoulder, elbow, wrist, and
hand in many directions, either together or individually.
This is open-chain activity. The distal segment is not
fixed but is free to move.
