Chapter 7
Simple Present Tense for 8 Grade SMP

In English, there are at least 16 tenses or forms of time used. By mastering this form of
time we are easier to master English. Tenses that were first invited usually "Simple
Present " does sound boring, why learn English is always inseparable from tenses, grammar
reviews continue, is not the purpose of learning English is for communicative purposes that
is mastering it to communicate? So why should grammar be discussed? Grammar, however,
is part of mastering aspects of English. Learning simple present tense that includes
Grammar is however important and supports active English for communication.

Present Tense is an English tenses used to express activities that become routine over and
over again. For more details as follows:

          Used to express general truth


1. The sun sunsets in the west
2. Water drifts from the higher place to the lower one.
3. The moon is round like a ball
4. Indonesia has two seasons, Wet and dry seasons.

    Used to express habitual actions


1. I teach English at SMPN 2 Genteng every Thursday.
2. Mother has lunch at 01 p.m.
3. They play football in the afternoon.
4. We take a bath twice a day.

     Used to declare planned or scheduled activities.


1. The course begins at nine o'clock.
2. She meets her fans on Sunday
3. When does the match start?

 Used to state the activities that are happening now.


1. I sit beside you
2. He is in his bedroom now.
3. They have much money

Simple Present has two sentence forms namely Nominal sentences and verbal


sentences. Nominal Sentence is a sentence in which there is no verb. In nominal sentences
there are usually adjectives, nouns, adverbs etc. While verbal sentences are sentences in
which there are verbs.
Example Nominal sentence:

1. My mother is happy.


2. He is handsome.
3. We are in the classroom.
4. Arman is a doctor.

Examples of Verbal Sentences:

1. My father goes to his office by car.


2. The paint catches the mouse everyday.
3. Buffaloes eat grass.
4. Shinta makes a cake on Wednesday.
5. They visit their friend every Sunday.

Formula for Nominal Sentences:

Affirmative/positive (+): S + to be + adj/noun/adverb


Negative: (-): S + to be + not + adj/noun/adverb
Interogative/Question (?): To be + S + adj/noun/adverb?

Subject: I use to be am
Subject: You, we, they use are
Subject: He, she, it uses is

Verbal sentence formula :

Affirmative/positive (+):
S+V1+O+adv+...

Negative: (-):
S+V1+ does not/do not + O + adv + ...

Interogative/Question (?):
Does/do+S+V1+O+Adv+...

o He, she it verbs(V1) plus s/es


o I, you we, they verbs(V1) are still intact
o To make negative sentences and questions used auxiliary words do / does
o For Subject He, she, it's verbs without s/es in negative sentences or questions.
Examples of the use of nominal and verbal sentences with negative and interrogative forms.

1. Aryo Yoso is a teacher.


(-)Aryo Yoso is not a teacher.
(?) Is Aryo Yoso a teacher? Yes, he is or No, he is not (isn't).

2. We are sad to hear the news.


We are not sad to hear the news.
Are we sad to hear the news?

3. Ronaldo kicks the ball beautifully.


Ronaldo doesn't kick the ball beautifully.
Does Ronaldo kick the ball beautifully?

4. They go to Bali every year.


They don't go to Bali evey year.
Do they go to Bali every year? Yes, They do or No, they do not (don't)

Verb rules for single third person He, she it plus s/es s/es s ending:

1. Verbs ending in -s, -sh, -ch, -x, -z, or -o get the


-es snant.
Example:
Guess to be gone
Wash into washes
Watch  into watches
Go  be goes
Etc.

2. Verbs ending in -y,
preceded by the dead letter(consonant)
get the -es suff ending by changing the -y suff ending to -i.
Example:
Dye becomes dies
Cry into cries
Study becomes studies

3. Verb  ending in -y, preceded byvowel,obtaining the sy-s ending by not changing the -y s
ending to –i
Example:
Stay  to stays
Enjoy being enjoys
4. In addition to the verb rule above, get the snant -s.
Example:
      Sing becomes sings
      Cook becomes cooks
      Read to be reads
      Etc.

5. Specifically for verbs Have changed to has if using a single Third Person subject such


as: He, she and it.
