4. PREPARATION OF TEST MATERIAL AND TEST PIECE

Test material and test pieces shall be prepared in accordance with 4. (Test material) and 5. (Preparation
of test piece) specified in NES M 0109 (General Rules of Testing Method for Welds).
If fusion cutting such as laser, gas or plasma is used for preparation of test pieces, finish machining to
remove heat-affected zone by cutting work shall be performed. To ensure that the result of the tension test
can be observed with ease and accuracy, excess buildup shall be removed and finishing shall be made to
the surface of the test material.

5. TESTING METHOD
5.1 The testing method shall be in accordance with JIS Z 2241 (Method of tensile test for metallic materials),
and the tensile load shall be measured with the test piece pulled.
5.2 In the case of the No. 2A test piece, as a rule, the core bar shown in Figure 8 shall be inserted into it as
shown in Figure 9.
5.3 The tensile test speed shall be within the range shown in JIS Z 3121 and JIS Z 3137. In the cross tensile
test, the speed shall be 5 to 200 mm/min for mild steel and 10 mm/min or less for other materials. 10
mm/min is recommended unless otherwise necessary.

be applied to it in the direction shown in the figure.

6. REPORT
The test results shall be indicated in accordance with Table 3 of 7 (Indication of test results) in NES M
0109 (General Rules of Testing Method for Welds). However, weld conditions on the surface that seem to
have an unfavorable effect upon test results shall be examined and recorded. In addition, nondestructive
inspection shall be carried out, if necessary, and internal conditions that seem to have intensive effects
shall be examined and recorded.

ANNEX
Revision in 2013
1. Three years have passed since the last revision (2010). Regular confirmation of details and concurrent
revisions were performed.
2. Revision points
The revision years of the references were updated. JIS Z 2201-1998 (Abolished in 2011) was deleted from
the reference.

Revision in 2010
1. Three years have passed since the last revision (2007). Regular confirmation of details and concurrent
revisions were performed.
2. Description of the test piece size was changed to JIS Z 3121 and JIS Z 3137.

Revision in 2007
1. Purpose of revision
3 years have passed since the last revision (2004). Regular confirmation of details and concurrent revi-
sions were performed.
2. Use of high tensile strength steel is increasing. There is a case to cut test pieces with fusion cutting de-
pending on material strength. To avoid influence of heat-affected zone on the test results, additional de-
tails of cutting work were newly added.
3. For the reference JIS for the tensile test speed and the cross tensile test, part of the description and the
recommended values were added from the viewpoint of convenience.

Revision in 2004
1. Purpose of revision
3 years have passed since the last revision (2001). Regular confirmation of details and concurrent revi-
sions were performed.
2. Revision points
Caption position for figures was changed to avoid misunderstanding. Error in Figure 5 on page 2 was cor-
rected: (19 × t) → (20 × t).
Revision in 2001
1. Purpose of revision
This NES was revised in 1998. To be consistent with References, it was reviewed and revised.
2. Main point of revision
To be consistent with relevant JIS (Z3137-1999 was revised), test piece symbols equivalent to JIS and
ISO were added.
3. Revision history (Revision points in 1998)
(1) For the test type, there is no butt welding joint tensile test of bars in the relevant JIS (JIS Z3121),
therefore the butt welding joint tensile test was deleted.
(2) The test piece dimensions were changed from JIS Z2241 (Method of tensile test for metallic materials)
to JIS Z3121 (Methods of tensile test for butt welded joints).

4. Reference
4.1 Test method
In the tensile test of sheet material spot welding joints, it is important to apply genuine tensile load to
welded points as much as possible. To perform this perfectly, a tensile test jig is specified. The hole di-
ameter and the distance of the test piece and the test jig shall be accurate, and in addition, the spot
welding position shall be at the center. It is recommended to use a jig for manufacturing test pieces. A
general description of the jig is shown on the reference drawing.
It is also important to strengthen tightening on the tensile test jig. The tensile strength value in the spot
welding joint tensile test of sheet materials may be individually examined, however, in many cases, the
ratio (ductile ratio) with the tensile shear strength is examined.
