(QJLQHW\SH This operating instruction concerns Wärtsilä 46, Wärtsilä 32, Wärtsila Vasa
32 and Wärtsilä 20 engines equipped with :ärtsilä (ngine &ontrol 6ystem,
WECS 2000.

*HQHUDO There are two functions in WECS supporting emergency operation:

The EODFNRXWVWDUWIXQFWLRQ is used for automatically starting the engine
after a blackout within the specified time delay.
The VKXWGRZQRYHUULGHIXQFWLRQ is used to exclude any engine
shutdowns during critical operation of the vessel.

%ODFNRXWVWDUW

Blackout start is an emergency function in WECS that allows engine starting

without prelubrication pressure.

Picture 1. The blackout start input OS748 in connector X6 as shown in

the installation specific electrical drawings

WECS 2000 has a blackout start input that can be activated by the external
control system within 5 minutes of lost pre-lubrication pressure. After 5
minutes the blackout start input is inhibited.

The engine needs to be in 5HDG\IRUVWDUW mode or 6WDUWEORFNLQJmode and

no shutdowns should be active before the EODFNRXWVWDUW is initiated. If the
engine has been in 5HDG\IRUVWDUW mode before the blackout it will go to
6WDUWEORFNLQJ mode when pre-lubrication pressure disappears.

When activating the blackout start input the start output to the RM (5elay
0odule) is activated directly, bypassing the normal start block checking and
slow turning (option) sequences in the MCU (0ain &ontrol 8nit).

Within the specified time there will be a sufficient oil-film present on the
bearing surfaces allowing starting without damage.

Note1 Normally the pre-lubrication pump should be supplied from the emergency
generator thus allowing normal start of the engine in case of blackout.

Note2 - If there is an active shutdown or the stop sequence is active the EODFNRXW
VWDUW will fail.
- If a shutdown has not been reset the EODFNRXWVWDUW will fail.

All shutdowns except backup overspeed trip and emergency stop can be
suppressed by activating the shutdown override input to WECS. Shutdown
override can be enabled in any mode of operation, it will in any case block or
release the stop solenoids.
The stop / shutdown override led on the RM is on when the function is
enabled.
If the engine is equipped with a LDU (/ocal 'isplay 8nit) the status line on
main page will show an 2 as 2verride in the right low corner of the display.

Would the electrical system fail the engine can be emergency started by
operating the master starting valve CV321 manually. In emergency start the
stop lever is used to control the acceleration.

Note1 The start is mechanically blocked, if the stop lever on the engine is in STOP
position, or pneumatically blocked, if the turning gear is engaged.

Note2 If there is an active non-resetable shutdown on WECS the shutdown

solenoids needs to be deactivated.

'HDFWLYDWLQJVKXWGRZQVROHQRLGVWRHQDEOHHPHUJHQF\VWDUW

Shutdown solenoids remain activated until the engine speed is below 1 rpm
or until installation specific 6WRSVROHQRLGDFWLYHWLPH have elapsed since the
shutdown was initiated and the shutdown reset has been given. If there is a
need to emergency start the engine during the shutdown sequence,
shutdown solenoids can be deactivated by activating the shutdown override.

Note1 Shutdown solenoids will be reactivated, if the shutdown override is

deactivated and shutdown reset has not been given before that. Shutdown
solenoids will also be activated, if there is at least one active stop or
shutdown input, when the shutdown override is deactivated.

Note2 Activation of shutdown override is not sufficient action in two cases:

1. Shutdown solenoids are activated due to emergency stop
2. Shutdown solenoids are activated due to backup overspeed detection
(limit about 18% over nominal speed).

In case of emergency stop the emergency stop button needs to be released

or the wire to R12 of RM disconnected.
In case of backup overspeed detection the connector R1-R3 of the RM
needs to be removed.
If connector R15 to R20 in the RM is disconnected the shutdown solenoids
are completely deactivated.

In serious WECS problems the functionality of the system can be reduced

into minimum by turning off the MCU. This can be done by pressing the MCU
power switch into OFF position. After this action only minimum safety
functionality of the Relay Module is available i.e. backup overspeed trip,
backup lube oil pressure shutdown, optional shutdown and emergency stop.
Turning off the MCU will naturally stop the Modbus communication to the
external alarm system. On the LDU all values will be shown inverted,
because they are no more updated. It is anyhow possible to operate the
engine with local start, stop and reset buttons. Also backup instrumentation
is still operational.

Note1 There is no automatic check for start conditions, when the MCU is turned off.
Therefore operator must personally ensure, that all start conditions are met
and it is safe to start the engine.

Turning off the MCU does not give any help, if problems occur with the Relay
Module. In that case the only reliable way to solve the problem is to replace
the broken module with a spare Relay Module.

If WECS problems are limited into one DCU (Distributed Control Unit) or
SMU (Sensor Multiplexer Unit), it is also possible to turn off that DCU or SMU
by disconnecting connector 31-34 on the SMU board. This way of working
guarantees that monitoring, safety and control functions needed for safe
operation of the engine are minimally influenced. All signals connected to the
disconnected DCU or SMU will give an alarm over Modbus.

If problems are limited to one signal or sensor only, it is possible to

disconnect the signal. The exact connection can be found from the
installation specific drawing ’Wiring diagram - Distributed units’. A sensor
failure code will be indicated over Modbus for the disconnected sensor.

01 WV23Q093GB 4(4)

Note2 Signals indicating sensor failure are ignored, when start conditions are
checked. Therefore operator must personally ensure, that disconnected
signals are not in critical situation, when the engine is started.

Initial reason for the problem should be investigated immediately and needed
actions to cure the problem should be taken as soon as possible. Once the
problem is solved, the system should be returned to a normal operation.

The electronic speed governor recieves a RUN/STOP control signal from

WECS. If the shutdown sequence of the RM is active the output will be
closed (or open if so configured) and the governor will receive a STOP signal
and set the fuelrack to zero position.

If the shutdown solenoids are deactivated according to the instruction in this

letter the speed governor will also be in RUN-mode allowing engine starting
and running.
Note In some electronic speed control models the stop sequence, activated by the
STOP control signal, can not be interrupted by giving a RUN control signal.
In this case, the RUN/STOP signal will only be effective for engine starting,
provided that the engine speed has fallen below the speed sensor failure
RYHUULGHVSHHG and the UXQGRZQWLPH has elapsed.
