[ FIVE SECOND PAUSE ]

(Voices: Usual Brown family members. Dan is a middle aged man.)

Sophie: (sound of car driving) Where are we going Dad?

Mr Brown: To my friend’s house, Sophie. His name’s Dan. Dan Smith.

Sophie: (a little confused) Is he that old man with white hair and glasses?

Mr Brown: No Sophie. He’s got glasses but his hair is black. He’s not very old.

Sophie: Has he got any children?

Mr Brown: Yes, three. Two girls and a boy but I can’t remember all their names.

The boy’s name is Colin I think. And there’s Angie … (thinking) No I

can’t remember.

Sophie: What about their mum? Mrs Smith?

Mr Brown: Mrs Smith? Well, her name’s Eva. I’ve got a photo of her at home. In

the photo, she’s got long blonde hair and she’s wearing shorts and a

T-shirt. But that’s a very old photo. She’s different now – she’s not

young and her hair is short.

Sophie: Dad, have Dan and Eva got a big house?

Mr Brown: Yes. They’ve got a lot of money. They’ve got three houses. A big one

in London and a small one at the beach. They’ve got one in America

too.

Sophie: Are we going to the house at the beach?

Mr Brown: No, to the one in London.

Sophie: Is there a pool in the garden?

Mr Brown: No, the garden’s small with flowers in it. But you can play in the

park – there are swings there.

Sophie: Great! And I can play computer games with Ben too. (pause)

(checking) Have Dan and Eva got a computer?

Mr Brown: Yes, three. Colin’s got one, the girls have got one and Dan and Eva

have got one too.

Sophie: That’s great.

Mr Brown: Oh, and Sophie, Dan and Eva have got a dog too. His name’s Rex.

Sophie: What about cats or hamsters?

Mr Brown: Well, they’ve got a little bird.

Sophie: (disappointed) That’s not very interesting. (more positive) How old

is Rex, Dad. Ten like me?

Mr Brown: No, he’s only three, sorry four. He’s very friendly.

Sophie: Good. We can take him to the park.

Mr Brown: Oh look, we’re there – that’s Dan’s car over there.

Sophie: The big, white one?

Mr Brown: No, the black one. The small white one is Eva’s. She doesn’t like big

cars. (fade)

You will now hear the conversation again.

DAN: Come into the living room everyone. This is a happy day for me so

I’ve got some presents for you.

(sound of excited chatter)

BEN: That’s fantastic. What have I got?

DAN: Wait Ben. Let’s do Jack first. (pause) This is for Jack. It’s a ball. He

can play with it in the park later. (pause) And this is for you Sophie.

SOPHIE: Is it a box of chocolates? I love chocolates.

DAN: Open it Sophie. (sound of present being unwrapped)

SOPHIE: Oh great! It’s a book – a book about cats. Cats are my favourite

animals. Thank you Dan.

BEN: (enthusiastically) Is it me now?

DAN: Yes Ben. It’s you now. This is for you.

BEN: (sound of present being unwrapped) I think it’s a jacket. (sound of

present continuing to be unwrapped) No, it’s a football shirt – and

it’s got a number on the front. Thanks Dan. Can I put it on now?

DAN: Sure Ben. (pause) And now it’s your turn Anna.

ANNA: OK. Is it a T-shirt, Dan?

DAN: Open it and see.

ANNA: Oh, it’s beautiful Dan. Look Mum – a beautiful dress with flowers on

it. It’s fantastic.

DAN: Do you like it Anna?

ANNA: Oh yes.

DAN: Here you are Tom. This is for you. It’s a shirt. Not for football – just

a white shirt. Is it OK?

MR BROWN: Of course Dan. Thank you very much.

DAN: And Liz. These are for your new hobby.

MRS BROWN: Tennis? What are they? Tennis balls?

DAN: Open the box and look.

MRS BROWN: (sound of present being unwrapped) Oh, new trainers, and just right

for me – not big and not small. Thank you Dan.

DAN: Now Tom. Take these two presents for Grandpa and Grandma.

(pause) Now, these chocolates are for Grandpa. He loves chocolates.

I know that.

MR BROWN: Yes, you’re right Dan.

DAN: And this is for Grandma.

MR BROWN: It’s a big box. Is it a television?

DAN: No. It’s a small tree. It’s for the house – not for the garden. Don’t

open it now but be careful with it. And say hello to Grandpa and

Grandma for us. (fade)

You will now hear the conversation again.
