1 INTRODUCTION
Dear Student,
As part of this tutorial letter, we wish to inform you that Unisa has implemented a transformation
charter based on five pillars and eight dimensions. In response to this charter, we have also
placed curriculum transformation high on the agenda. For your information, curriculum
transformation includes the following pillars: student-centred scholarship, the pedagogical
renewal of teaching and assessment practices, the scholarship of teaching and learning, and
the infusion of African epistemologies and philosophies. These pillars and their principles will be
integrated at both the programme and module levels, as a phased-in approach. You will notice
the implementation in your modules, and we encourage you to fully embrace these changes
during your studies at Unisa.

2 PURPOSE OF AND OUTCOMES FOR THE MODULE

2.1 Purpose

• to develop the understanding of advanced drawing principles and techniques

• to develop the understanding of engineering software (CAD) ,

• to gain competence in international standard codes of practice used in preparing

engineering drawings,

• to prepare the learner to be competent in the employment environment.

2.2 Outcomes

• Application of reinforced concrete theory in the detailing of concrete structures.

• The application of structural steel theory in detailing and specifying

structural steel members for various structures.

• The application of engineering principles in preparing cadastral and topographic

maps.

• The preparation of full engineering drawings for the purpose of construction.

• Preparing house plans and all relevant detail for the purpose of construction.

2.3 Graduate Attribute

contact the help line at: [email protected]

Plagiarism
An assignment is designed to be a product of your own study and your own thought. It is not
intended to be a piece of work which merely reproduces details, information or ideas from a
study guide, from books or articles, or from the Internet.
If you do this, you commit plagiarism. Plagiarism is the act of copying word for word with or
without acknowledgment from study sources (e.g. books, articles, the Internet). In other words,
you must submit your own ideas in your own words, sometimes interspersing relevant short
quotations that are properly referenced.

Yes, simply copying a few pages from the prescribed book is plagiarism. Pasting paragraphs
from Wikipedia into your assignment is plagiarism. And it does not stop being plagiarism if you
mention the source.
Skilled scientific writers can use direct block quotations to make a specific point. They know
what they are doing. You still need to develop your own voice, your own style of arguing the
point. Do not plagiarise.
Note that you also commit plagiarism if you copy the assignment of another student. We do
encourage you to work together and form study groups, but you are expected to prepare and
submit your own assignments.

7
When we receive two or more identical assignments, we are not able to work out who copied
from whom. We will therefore penalize both students.
If you commit plagiarism you will be penalized and given no marks for your assignment.
This will have a serious effect on your chances to succeed in your studies because you
will have no semester mark.
Furthermore, you may be penalised or subjected to disciplinary proceedings by the University.
Plagiarism is also an offence in terms of the law.

A Signed Declaration
Every essay-type assignment we receive must include the following declaration along with
your name and the date:

“I declare that this assignment is my own work and that all sources quoted
have been acknowledged by appropriate references”.

We will subtract marks if this declaration is absent from your assignment.

8.5 Assignments

• Do not attempt to do the assignment before you have studied your course material.
There is no sense in copying an answer from the textbook or study material, and you
do not understand the background. You get good marks for the assignment, and then
fail the examination because you think you know the work while it was just a verbatim
copy from the study material without any real understanding.

• Ensure you read each question properly, and answer all subsections of the question.

• Complete the assignment cover fully and CORRECTLY.

• Submission as per “my Studies@unisa”booklet

• You may do ALL the questions by means of any CAD programme, but keep in mind
that the examination will be with pencil on paper. It will be good to practice your
drawing with pencil.

• SUBMIT ASSIGNMENTS PRINTED OR DRAWN ON A3 OR LARGER PAPER.

YOU MAY FOLD THE SHEETS TO FIT IN THE ASSIGNMENT COVER.

• DO NOT SUBMIT ROLLED SHEETS, IT WILL BE RETURNED UNMARKED!

SPECIFIC COMMENTS
1. In these assignments you are required to apply the techniques you have studied and
practised while working through the text book. Remember to always read and study with a
pencil in your hand; sketch and calculate while you study.

8
DRW2601/101/3/2021

2. Please remember that all drawings are to be scaled. Notes and tables are to be complete
(or portions of) engineering drawings at tertiary level. They are to be completed to minimum
international standards.
3. All work is to be completed as "finished" civil engineering drawings in pencil; (no ball point
pens please), neat, complete, accurate, correct, well proportioned, neatly laid out and with
border lines 15 mm from the edges of all sheets. Always add essential dimensions.
4. All lettering (printing) are to be neatly and correctly formed, with uniform slopes (vertical
upper case (capitals) are recommended), only two guidelines are required, and they are
easier to master. Don't underline; for emphasis increase size or boldness.
5. Similarly, dimensions are to be neatly printed with correctly formed shapes within parallel
guidelines. Dimensions to be placed a minimum of 1 mm above dimension lines and are to
be "centred" wherever possible.

6. Add a note to drawings stating that "all dimensions are in mm", to avoid repetition of "mm".
7. Always add neatly arranged, descriptive titles, scales, other descriptions and annotations
(notes) where applicable.
8. The descriptions of views (plan, elevation, section, etc) to be centred or preferably left-
aligned below each view.
9. Check and re-check all questions and answers for correctness; completeness, neatness,
accuracy etc.
10. Take care with all your work and take pride in it.
11. If in doubt, add more information.
12. Show what you know and display your skills.
13. Drawing is time-consuming, and needs a lot of patience and practice. It is a very worthwhile
skill, which will always be yours, and will be at your fingertips for the rest of your life.
14. Keep practising; and good luck to you!

Assignment 2
First Semester 2021

As a structural steel detailer, you are required to draw the beam-to-column connection as
explained below. The column is a 254 x 254 x 89 kg/m H-section, Beam 1 is a 406 x 178 x 75
kg/m I-section and Beam 2 is a 356 x 171 x 51 kg/m I-section. The tops of the beams are at
the same level.
Beam 1 (406 x 178 x 75 kg/m I-section) is connected with an end plate to the flange of the
column. The end plate is 430 mm x 200 mm x 10 mm and is connected with 6 M16 bolts (3 on
each side of the web) to the column flange. The end plate is welded all round with a 5 mm fillet
weld to the end of Beam 1. The holes for the end plate have a 140 mm pitch distance, 75 mm
end distance and 30 mm edge distance.

Beam 2 (356 x 171 x 51 kg/m I-section) is connected with web cleats to the web of the column.
The cleats is 70 x 70x 6 angles and is 250 mm long and placed at the centre of web. The cleats
are connected with 3 M16 bolts on each leg of the angle with a 100 mm pitch distance and 25
mm end distance.

Use a scale of 1:5 and draw the section through Beam 2 showing all dimensions, symbols and
details, so that the connection could be manufactured in a workshop. Do not show any hidden
detail of the connection. Use the annexures attached for all sizes of steel members and position
of bolts.

Assignment 2
Second Semester 2021

As a structural steel detailer, you are required to draw the following beam-to-beam connection.
Two 356x171x45 I-Sections must be spliced together. The two I-Sections are connected to
each other with flange splice plates as well as web splice plates. The web splice plates (one on
each side, placed at the centre) are 250x200x6 plates connected with six M20 bolts, three bolts
on each I-section. The pitch distance is 75 mm, end and edge distances are 50 mm. The flange
