EGS & EGS Lean Burn Trim Knock Control Strategies Application Note 51335
Issue
For control of engine knock based on data received from the Woodward
FireFly™ (if installed), these systems allow the user to select either timing retard
or load (or speed) reduction. However, it is possible for the user to select both
strategies, in which case they will operate simultaneously. This is not an intended
function of the product.
Description
The knock control strategies were intended to be adapted unchanged from the
EGS-01 product, which preceded the EGS and EGS Lean Burn Trim. The EGS-
01 offered three strategies:
Timing Retard
Load (or speed) Reduction
Timing Retard followed by Load (or speed) Reduction
In the EGS-01, option 3 is selected when the user selects both timing retard and
load (or speed) reduction. In EGS and EGS Lean Burn Trim, when the user
selects both functions, they operate simultaneously instead of sequentially. This
unintended combination may result in sub-optimal engine performance and
unpredictable knock control behavior.

intended functionality as implemented in the EGS-01.

Customer Action
Do not select speed or load reduction with timing retard for knock control. Use
one strategy only: either timing retard or load (or speed) reduction.
