1. Critically analyze Lensk’s classification of sociology.

Lensk’s classification of societies.

- In Lensk’s period there were emergence of social theory that were explaining different
schemes for social culture. Lensk’s chose to use technology.
- Lensk’s differentiates societies on their level of technology, communication and
economy.
- They are states as below:
i. Hunters and gatherers
Hunting and gathering entails that in a society, people hunted animals and gathered wild
fruits, and wild vegetation in general. The practice of hunting and gathering were done
using simple tools. This stage pioneered the first technological advancement since there
was continuous movement of these animals and plants occurred in different seasons
therefore these societies were forced to move from one place to another to follow animals
hence had little potential to make their movement easy.
ii. Hoticulturalism and pastoralism
- Pastoralism is the act of domesticating animals for subsistence processes whereas
horticulturalism and pastoralism process and produced food in large quantity. Enough
supply of food lead to growth in population. these growth in population triggered the
need of social rule, therefore political leaders, religion leaders were elected. The society
introduced equity which was not there before. There was also construction of permanent
settlement where finally cities developed.
iii. Agricultural
Agricultural practice entails the growing of crops. the society used small tools like panga
to plant the crops. The society dug small wells where they could get water for their
irrigation. The food from the small communal farm provided food for the people hence
lead to population growth.
iv. Industrial age or industry.
- Industrialization is an advanced method of production. It entails the use of more
advanced machines with energy. Industrial revolutions I what brought up this stage. Due
to the enclosure movement, machines were brought to the factories then the leaders
forced their subject to work in the factories. These continuous process of factories lead to
the growth of urban centers which improved the living standards of people.
2. Elaborate the main function of culture in your society.
Functions of culture.
 It creates identification
- Culture creates identification in that it clearly brings out the uniqueness of different
communities. where the communities practice different set of rituals that is different from
another set of rituals that is different from another community shows how unique is from
the other. Example is language, art, and religion.
 Define legends.
- Culture define legends in that each community has its own legend. It is through culture
that individuals from these different communities can define their legends.
 Helps in solving complicated situations.
- Culture provides men a set of behavior for different situations. If culture would not be
there, man would have been baffled even at their simplest situations. Culture also plays a
role in determining what we eat, drink, when to sleep, when to laugh etc.
 Culture keeps social relationship intact.
- Despite the fact that culture has got importance to man, it also has to group people. It
prepares man for group life. Communal life would have been poor, nasty and short if
there had been no cultural regulations. Group solidarity resists on the foundations of
culture.
 Provide continuity through biological process.
- It is through culture where the man will biologically reproduce in order to have a
generation.
