Day 1

Content Standard: Realizes the rigors of crafting one’s speech.

I- Objectives:

Use principles of effective speech delivery focusing on:

a) Articulation

b) Modulation

II- Reference: Speech and Oral Communication for College Students

A. Activity 1a:

1) Read the following:

a) By pair

b) By group (5 members each)

Let the activity be recorded.

Tongue Twister

Teophiles Thistle, the successful thistle-sifter,

in sitting a sieve full of un-sifted thistles,

thrust three thousand thistles through the thick of his thumb.

Now….if Theophiles Thistles, the successful thistle-sifter,

in sitting a sieve full of un-sifted thistles

thrust three thousand thistles through the thick of his thumb,

see that thou, in sitting a sieve full of un-sifted thistles,

thrust three thousand thistles through the thick of thy thumb.

Success to the successful thistle-sifter!

B. Analysis

1b. Look for an announcement about a speaker on campus. Go to the

presentation and focus on the delivery.

1. What did you notice about the speaker’s delivery? The speaker’s voice and the

way he pronounced the words?

C. Abstraction

1. Do articulation and modulation help to get the interest of the listener?

2. Do they help to get the message of the speaker?

D. Application:

Distribute strips of paper to students. Let the students read aloud one at a time

what is written on each strip of paper. Ask the student or other students from the class

to explain the message which is written on each strip of paper..

1 This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of

opportunity of this nation. And so, we've come to cash this check, a check that will give

us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice.

7. This sweltering summer of the Negro's legitimate discontent will not pass until

there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality.

8. For man holds in his mortal hands the power to abolish all forms of human

poverty and all forms of human life.

9. But what is important is that you and I continue to believe in the future of our

country.

10. This is a country that suffers the grip of poverty. What we need are genuine

leaders, leaders like the young people from the University of Perpetual Help.

IV- Evaluation:

1. Watch the video and evaluate Russel Norman’s Speech.

2. Asses the focal point of discussion.

3. Take note of the strengths and weaknesses of the speech.

4. Write in one half sheet of paper about your evaluation on the correct use of

articulation and the value of modulation.

Web Activity

Go to www.whitehouse.gov and watch President Obama’s speech. What do you

notice about his delivery and language use? Write your observations in your notebook.
